I have a 2013 chevy spark...which all of a sudden had no freon, I took it to 2 mechanics and both said I had a leak and they both suspected the evaporator core was the culprit... so I Googled the symptoms for the evaporator leak and I had neither...so I took it to a 3rd Well known local mechanic with a great stellar reviews because of his honest work...and he told me it was the Valve and I only wasted 4 bucks, he didn't even charge me, but out of the kindness of my heart I gave him 60.00...beware people they're alot of mechanics that are like piranhas they'll devour you if your not careful...always get a second opinion or maybe a 3rd opinion, don't settle for what the first mechanic says.

Honest Mechanics are the best! So glad your car was fixed! My A/C was messed up. I did lots of research and based on my research and symptoms, I could not find out what was wrong. I told my mechanic this. He recharged my system and checked for leaks. The valve was the issue. Charged me $90 total. Works great now! Anyone else I’m sure would’ve charged me much more. The Chevy dealership told me $450 to recharge and check for leaks. $450! I laughed at them and called my mechanic. Haha… no. I have a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

That balloon idea of yours is damn useful! I just used a small screwdriver to tighten the low-side valve, dumped a little freon in, covered the port with a balloon, ran the vehicle for 20 minutes with AC blasting, and noted the air is still freezing and the balloon is still deflated. I'll call that a win. Thanks!

I have JRA cores on my car. A 15 years old one failed in that way: the spring that keeps the valve closed lost tension, and now all it takes to open it is to wiggle the core around. Basically, the refrigerant pressure is what kept the core closed. But it hissed when the cap was removed. The PAG oil is probably what kept it open. It was on the low pressure port. Now both cores have been replaced and they no longer leak. I have a lot of bicycle tire Schrader cores around, and the spring is rock hard.

I appreciate the video. Good info. I gotta question though. Gotta 05 Silverado. Mine was fine, just checking to see if a pressure gauge worked. And when I connected it it broke the shrader valve. Gotta a replacement valve and put it in, obviously gushed out for a couple moments. Now I put roughly 14 oz of r134a back in. Just going till ac felt pretty cold. NOW the question. My cab smells like damn freon. There was no leak before and I’m fairly confident, there isn’t a leak anywhere else and the valve stem isn’t leaking anymore. Ya think the cabin air filter picked up the r134a gas and that’s why it ain’t going away? After I replaced the shrader valve I quickly turned on the engine/ac. Ya know, testing. You think that fresh gas was just sucked in by the bottom of windshield fan inlets and now I gotta replace the filter to get rid of the smell?

Joseph Vallejo yes you do, if all your refrigerant (Freon ) leaks out for whatever reason, yes you would use a vacuum pump, (looks like a small compressor) to pull a good vacuum on the whole A/C lineset (which removes air/condensate/moisture as the vacuum is pulled) then you charge/pressurize your system with Freon and oil or they sell a mixed blend! IF YOU DO NOT USE OIL WITH REFRIGERANT YOUR COMPRESSOR BURNS UP SO TAKE HEED! And read and GOOGLE

@@bryanbyrd111 That little fluid once in the can is supposed to be what mixes in the refrigerant. How much comes out depends upon how fast the refrigerant is recovered/leaks away. 1 fl oz is usually what is required for a blown hose, half of that is usually what RRR stations reclaim together with the refrigerant. If the leak is slow (days or weeks to empty the system), and you don't see any oil anywhere, then i see no need to add additional oil. In fact too much oil might hamper heat exchange and increase head pressure.

can u pls help? my truck 03 silverado has not had ac/cold air for a couple yrs. last week i put 2 cans of refrigerant in the system. so i hear the compressor kik on and i get excited lol the thing is blowin nice cold air. monday comes and im bak to the same problem. i look and thers green stuff leakin all over the high end service port(the one u dont put refrigerant in)?!?!? i thot it was coolant lol but im like how did coolant get in ther. but i remember takin it to a shop so im guessin they put sum dye in ther im not sure. anyways so i replace the whole thing. put sum refrigerant in. but man its acting weird this time. im using the ac pro recharge hose n gauge. the gauge reads red wen the ac in not engaging n wen it does its reads in the white/low. last week it did not do this at all. it was jus stationary but it would go up wen i added refrigerant not bak n forth like it does now. am i jus low on refrigerant or is it sumthin else?

The green that you are seeing is the refrigerant oil. No you don't put freon into the high side; but that doesn't mean there isn't freon there. It is the high "pressure" side, and would cause the can to explode in your hands, causing serious personal injury. It can very well still leak freon and/or refrigerant oil.

Quick question. Q1 - If you remove the schrader valve and system vacuum is lost/evacuates and you want to DIY recharge it do you need to vacumize it (costly $$) or will recharging with a can or two from wally/AZ create a vacuum in the system once again (if you want to avoid pro mech and DIY it? Q2 - If this is assumption is correct to ensure air escapes as you recharge do you loosen the high port a little bit? Q3 - All I have seen a pro vids. Can any one point me to a video that shows a DIY on this-not just a recharge fill-up but one where the system vacuum evacuated and was refilled without pro tools. Thanx!

An A/C system in normal state operates under pressure - not vacuum. The purpose of pulling a vacuum is to remove air, and most importantly moisture, before pressurizing it with freon. Seriously folks, I have no objections to doing it yourself ... but know what you are working on. Especially with AC, it can be dangerous. High side in operation has close to 300lbs of pressure. Not operating, you'll have about 100 lbs on both sides.

It is a legal to vent refrigerant into the atmosphere doesn't matter what kind it is. 1st of all you don't go and remove the shrader valve to release the refrigerant That's why it needs to be recovered 1st.because moisture goes back into the System and can damage your compressor.it must be put on a vacuum for at least 45 minutes Then you add refrigerant.

Being technical, and not political...Most systems are R-134a now, not R-12. As such, r-134 does negligible damage to the Ozone. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane). It is a greenhouse gas...but that is different than Ozone damage. That said, if you replace the schrader yourself, you then should evacuate the system before recharging, to properly remove contaminates.

Are you supposed to "evacuate the system" in the atmosphere like this ? I think not..............

NO worries! It would take billions and billions of tons of refrigerant to cause any kind of harm to the ozone layer. The EPA is just being extra extra extra cautious here when they make regulations that all mechanics or DIY car owners must buy $15,000 Refrigerant Recovery equipment if they ever need to release 1.6 oz of refrigerant when working on their A/C system in their driveway

How do you suppose the R-134a is going to get into the Ozone? Magical teleportation device? Flying Car Maintenance in the Ozone layer? Seeing how R-134a is about 5 times heavier than air it's going to just hang out at your ankles.

You can't release the 134 into the air. You need to take it to a shop and have it recovered. Also, wear gloves and eye protection when working with the refrigerant.

Is there some sort of secret 134a refrigerant detector that local or government officials use to determine if there is a violation? What is the penalty if a DIY is working on their private vehicle and they evacuate the 134a refrigerant into the air? I have been working on cars in my residence for 15 years now, and one of the most common and simplist repairs is fixing the A/C system in older cars. I do not have the space nor the funds for the equipment invented to recover refrigerant. But my goal is to provide the proper repairs that allow drivers of cars that are only worth $500 or less to have a proper functioning A/C system in hot weather. And I do the repairs at minimal cost to the car owner which is why I get so much business. Lastly, I agree totally about wearing protective equipment when working with high pressure components of a automobile. For me, wearing gloves is a must at all times, and when opening the A/C system for whatever reason, and seeing the extreme pressures in that system, proper eye goggles is a must to protect myself.

That law only applies to certified auto specialists and shops that "knowingly and purposefully release refrigerant into the atmosphere" without the use of proper recovery equipment. The average shade-tree DIYer isn't subject to any such law.
