    You are correct about removing or evacuating the refrigerant in the proper way, glad to hear that. One thing you are incorrect about is your statement "that's it, all you have to do is refill the refrigerant". Wrong! Now you have introduced air into the system. If you just refill the system with refrigerant you can ultimately ruin the entire system because of the trapped air. Now a vacuum pump must be connected to the system to evacuate the air and moisture in the system, then add the refrigerant.

  • @Daddicated

    @Daddicated

    Your are absolutely correct about that. I guess I implied that as part of the refilling process but should of been more clear. Thanks for the clarification.

    So you have to evac the system to follow the epa regulation, then you install the valve, then you have to evac it again to get the air out? 😑

    @@nbl95 anytime you open the system and all the Freon escapes (for instance my car uses 134a which can be vented, R22 should NOT be) the system will suck in air. That means it needs to be hooked up to a vacuum pump and evacuated. Then you add the new freon.

I was quite relieved it wasn't a worser case scenario, but it's always interesting to see where I just wasted my most recent chunk of change. Legally you first needed to have the freon evacuated by a certified technician. You can’t just release your freon into the air. Then you can replace the valve. Finally, you need to correctly pull a vacuum on the system to remove moisture, air, and test for leaks. Then you need to properly refill they system with the correct amount of freon (and Honda systems are very touchy about under/overfilling). So your invoice may have stated $100 for replacing the Schrader valve, but the auto technician had to determine that was where your system was leaking. You only got ripped off if you have the equipment and knowledge to do everything else besides replacing the Schrader valve.

    Should I be concerned if after replacing the valve I put in refrigerant without vacuuming the air out. The system works fine and shoots out cold air.

    The system will work fine now but long term could be damaged. Vacuuming it out insures no moisture is in the system. You may be fine but there is a chance for long term consequences.

    Yes, the system is under pressure and most if not all the refrigerant will blow out the line. The only way this will not occur is if the refrigerant has already leaked out depressurizing the system. That is why an a/c system must be evacuated to remove the refrigerant properly and not just into the air. Plus the refrigerant could spray in your eyes!

    CAUTION!! EYE, SKIN & INTERNAL INJURIES MAY OCCUR!! DO NOT REMOVE ANY PARTS OF AN A/C SYSTEM UNTIL REFRIGERANT IS EVACUATED OR YOU CAN CONFIRM IT HAS LEAKED OFF!! Easy way to check, using eye protection, glove and rag depress the low or high side schrader valve with a small screwdriver or small blunt object. If the system is still under pressure a small amount refrigerant will spray out. Yes, all refrigerant and most of the oil will spray out of either side, low or high once a schrader valve is removed. Have a proper service facility evacuate the system, then repair or replace damaged parts. Next they will draw a vacuum to remove air, moisture and check for leaks, then refill with refrigerant and check for leaks once again.
