How To: Remove EGR and clean on a Saab 9-3

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My car is having trouble starting so I spoke to a specialist who recommended I check the EGR valve isn't stuck open.
I show you how to get it off, clean it and re-assemble.

    Hey, I had similar problems with my 2006 Saab a few hours ago. It was struggling to start, then when it did start it only idled for a few seconds then cut out. The third time it idled but when the throttle is pressed it did not rev. So I left it running for 5 minutes and there was smoke coming from the engine bay but when I gave it a rev it sprung into life and the smoke disappeared. Before it revved it sounded like it was chugging, sort of when a 4 cylinder is only running on 3 cylinders. It's just ticked over 186000 miles, I'm guessing egr but I might be wrong. Hope you got yours sorted buddy. Thanks for the upload 👍👍

    Next time you pull the egr, the map sensor can easily be cleaned, 1 bolt, it's just behind it on the manifold. My 93 had a slight exhaust leak at the flexy pipe, because it was b4 the oxygen sensor it intermittently played fck with my idle, probably adding fuel to compensate for unmetered air. How's the car these days? I'm on 180k atm

    Definitely wasn't the EGR, I tested the glow plugs by hot-wiring them and it started instantly so it's definitely a fault on the glow plug circuit

    Also get a restriction plate and fit to the Egr 8 mm whole in it stops the inlet manifold blocking up .Also clean the Map sensor along the top of the rail to the left of egr.one torx screw put off and clean with carb cleaner spay don't touch it .Let dry put back

    Do you not need to depress the clutch and brake pedal before ignition. I'm having somewhat similar starting issue recently and trying to whittle down possible solution.

  • @gavinfromyavin

    @gavinfromyavin

    No my car isn't new enough to need the brake depressing before ignition. In the end this problem was a combination of my starter motor being old and worn out, which I replaced, and I also had a broken wire terminal on the front left of the car underneath where the fog lights are which I found out was part of the exterior temperature sensor circuit. Basically my car didn't know what temperature it was so it wasn't turning my glow plugs on, after fixing this it worked perfectly. I knew it had to be a glow plug related issue because it only started to be problematic when it got cold. I hope this helps, any questions feel free and I'll do my best to help out.

    My car is on 176,000 miles so I think it's been doing pretty well considering. The only other major problem I had was the alternator going on it about 2 or 3 years ago. And if I remember right it was on about 120,000 miles when I got it.

    So I had a broken wiring loom under my left fog lamp, it's part of the external temperature sensor circuit. My car wasn't displaying an external temperature on my dash though so unless you have that same problem then it won't be this I don't think. I am going to finish the series soon though just been busy with other things.

    @@gavinfromyavin Thanks for the video. I've got the same starting issues and the same broken loom which I need to fix (no temp display). Do you know how these two issues connect from one to the other and what causes the problem? I'm just curious as to what is going on.

  • @gavinfromyavin

    @gavinfromyavin

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@skyfisting So the wiring loom is for the external thermometer, basically if that is broken then the car doesn't know what the temperature is and the glow plugs are only programmed to come on below a certain temperature, I think its like 10° and below. So basically the the car is not getting the info it needs to let the glow plugs start heating the block before trying to start which is causing the starting issues.

    Problem with EGR is that it is getting dirty quickly. The diesel engines needs to be driven quite long not to get the EGR valve clogged up. If a person only drives short distances the code p0400 will appear quite often :(

  • @gavinfromyavin

    So yes I found the problem, it was a wiring terminal in front of the left front wheel that had gotten damaged. It was part of the thermostat system that tells the car it's cold and that it needs to heat the engine with the glow plugs. If you have the same issue as I did you will have no temperature read out on the dashboard and you can always check to see if any wiring is damaged in that location. I hope this helps and all the best sorting your problem. 👍
