I had the dreaded code P0403 last Thursday, watched this video and removed the EGR valve Friday, cleaned it and put it back on Saturday. Then I deleted the code and took my VW for a 20min drive for the computer to reset. Car is fine now! You have saved me some money, thanks.

Excellent down to earth video and great idea using using the oven cleaner. At the end of the day carbon is carbon and the oven clearn is spot on. I'm a trained engineer of 25years in industrial equipment and machinery and I think what you have done and how you have done it is spot on. Great video and thank you. Doesn't matter how much experience you have behind you, there is always something new to learn and try!

At a large industrial rail workshop an apprentice once left a 16cyl diesel aluminium engine block in a (very) hot, concentrated caustic bath over a long weekend - it was totally dissolved. However, in this application - no issue at all!!!

Your comment and warning about possible damage to aluminum surfaces from extended contact with oven cleaner was appropriate and reasonable. That said, the brief, scrubbing contact you demonstrated did a perfectly acceptable job. Thanks for the video.

Good stuff, did this myself before seeing this a month or 2 ago on my VW T5. I used some oven cleaner in a bag from B&M for £2.99 it stained the aluminium but the van drives mint regardless if it's clocked elsewhere. It was also as bad as yours. Thumbs up

2007 combo van 1.3 cdti, money light on, non starter. Bought cheap code reader (£17). Code P0400 EGR flow problems. Given difficulty of access to EGR solenoid, valve and attached water cooler, definitely replace with OE. Having got it off saw was jammed fully open, and had to be tapped shut with a hammer. It looked cleanable, so had a look and found your video. In short, with nothing to lose, I dug out my pretty strong bottle of gel oven cleaner. I kid you not, after half an hour I could have sold the part as brand new. After first brushing with gel, valve actually popped free. By time of third brushing it was smooth and so clean. Having found another video whereby they found out that this model of combo van wont run if EGR valve is stuck open, I chanced to not buy OE and put back the cleaned valve. Started first turn. Amazing, saved me and son (its his van) probably around £500? Its all round the back of engine. Coolant had to be drained, exp bottle off, fuel filter off, turbo pipes off, EGR coolant system off.....Thanks BMAC Cars & Mods.

Like it!! If you don't try, you won't win. I think the biggest problem is access to the EGR valve to remove it. I would love it if all car designers were made to remove and refit these high maintenance parts so that they never design in the nightmare problems of routine maintenance. Some manufactures get this right, but so many just don't.

I have had my SAAB break down because of carbon build up. Was not just in the EGR Valve, but my Swirls flaps also wore their holes so badly, that I needed a new inlet manifold and swirl flaps and so, if your carbon build up is THAT bad, I wqould suggest that you also check your inlet manifold and swirl flaps also because it almost killed my engine as the previous owner obviously saw how bad it had got and did nothing to sort it, just sold it off, and I was left witt a car that cost me 5 grand to buy and after only 3 months, I was left with a car that was in permanent limp mode until I had it rebuilt. Its now smooth as silk mind you and I am in love with her at long last.

For what it's worth. In spite several pro versions of mechanical workshop products. There's 2 household products that have a permanent space in my garage. Oven cleaner and air spray! Both on the cheapest option/brand I can find. AND no, I don't have an oven in the garage, neither an hair salon! LOL 😂 Oven cleaner is excellent for anything involving removal of carbon and grease (ex. heads, valves, EGR). The air spray is for assembling tires! Lubricate the bead during assembly and "glue" it temporarily. Leave no marks, don't make a mess, easily applied (spray) and come out with plain water (rain, wash...) ;-)

Cracking result man, I used your advice about steam cleaning the head internally on my 1984 land rover 110. The results were great at first but sadly didn't last.

Couldn't find Mr Muscle Foam but used Cilit Bang's bathroom surface power foam and this did the job perfectly. Followed your advise, spent about £5 and about 1 hour and it looks brand new. Hopefully that'll fix my 03 Mondeo from cutting out around 3k rpm.

Cleaning doesn't always work, sometimes the actuator fails due to the coils breaking down from fighting the resistance of the carbon...

If you live in an area where you can get away with it... I find the best cleaning method is had by removing the EGR valve and placing it in the garbage. Block off plate and ecu reflash to get away from it throwing the egr fault code. 555,555km on my pd tdi this week.

@@davidwarren4569 If you do an egr delete, your ecu will throw a egr fault code when you start back up...Your engine lite will come on. Theres no harm done to anything if you continue driving the vehicle if its throwing the fault, but if you want to get permanently rid of the check engine lite, you'll need to take your car or ecu to tdi tuner...someone whose like a franchisee to Malone or Kerma tuning. They plug into your ecu and tell it to not throw a fault code when it recognizes that the egr valve is no longer there. This is also usually a complementary flash if your getting a tune.

That works fine on older diesels, but the modern ones with electronic EGRs can’t be sorted this way. For some you can still put a blanking plate in & fool the ECU into thinking the EGR is working ( when all it’s doing is opening & closing). There are now vehicles out there with sensors that measure the gas flow through the EGR. They can’t be blanked.
