How To Make Tomato Pie

A delicious "pizza like" pie that comes from my hometown of Utica, NY. It's made with homemade pizza dough, and topped with extra tomato sauce, Parmesan cheese, and oregano. Perfect snack, and great for kids' lunches.
PRINTABLE RECIPE:
food52.com/recipes/77024-toma...
DOUGH INGREDIENTS:
1 cup water
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons sugar
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons yeast
TOPPINGS:
1-2 cups Ragu Traditional sauce
1/3-1/2 cups Parmesan, Romano, Asiago cheese blend (divided)
1/2 teaspoon oregano
2-3 tablespoons butter, softened (FOR BAKING PAN)
DIRECTIONS:
1. Place pizza dough ingredients in a stand mixer, turn to setting number 2, and allow to knead for 8 minutes.
2. After the 8 minutes, take the dough out, shape it into a ball, and place it back in the mixing bowl after spraying it with some cooking spray.
3. Let the dough rise for one hour. Using a paper towel coat an 11x17 baking pan with butter.
4. Hold the dough up and allow it to stretch, then place it on the baking sheet and press it evenly to the edges of the pan using your hands.
5. Spread about 1/2 cup of sauce over the dough in a light layer, and sprinkle with about 1-2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese.
6. Bake at 425* for 6 minutes.
7. Pour about one cup more of sauce over the dough so it's pretty saucy.
8. Sprinkle with 2-3 more tablespoons of Parmesan cheese, and oregano.
9. Bake an additional 9 minutes.
Tomato Pie can be enjoyed at room temperature.

My Dear, Tomato Pie has been a Philadelphia classic for over 100 years. It's not as well known as the Philly Cheesesteak but Philly Tomato Pie has a strong devoted following. Always better to make it with fresher ingredients...and no cheese if you want to call it Tomato Pie.

you killed OUR tomatoe pie using ragu. A pizza sauce and crushed tomatoes is the best. Romano is used, not parm. For kids that might be good.

I live in Salem, MA and grew up in New Hartford, NY most of my life. I remember individual squares of tomato pie wrapped in saran at the check out counter in various stores. It always hit the spot. Your video reminded me of how much hype(in a good way) there is for this pie.

Growing up and eating this in Philly I am highly offended by the quality of ingredients you're using lol; however, I'm going to be trying to make my own and lets just say my cooking is a little rusty so the video REALLY helped me out. Thanks a bunch. I think I even like it better cold!

I don’t know how this came up in my feed, but Utica Tomato Pie is not at all like pizza. Utica is also not a small town. 😂

I always heard this was a Philadelphia thing, but I'm starting to think it's just wherever you got Italians that they do this tomato pie thing if they're next to the bread makers.
