How To Improve Your Videos With Sound [Simple Sound Design]

Фильм және анимация

On this episode, I want to share a few of the lessons on sound design that I’ve learned as a freelance videographer and video creator. Specifically, I want to share with you the steps that I take in every video I make to improve the overall immersion and keep the audience even more entertained than you can with great visuals alone.

When I first started making brand and showcase videos, I often focused on just having great visuals and syncing them to great music. That’s an awesome start, but since then I’ve learned a lot, and one of my big lessons was in the importance of great audio in your videos. Today I want to break down a few things I’ve learned and implemented over the last few years to improve the audio in my videos, and how you can take these same concepts and implement them to improve the audio in your videos. And keep in mind, this is all stuff you can do for free. You don’t need to buy any extra equipment, and you don’tneed anything in particular to make this work. All you really need is an editing program that allows you to have multiple audio tracks running simultaneously in your timeline.
The largest overarching lesson I’ve taken away from all of my own education and experience, is that sound design is an art, and it is incredibly complex and difficult to do really well. If you’re working at a high level professionally, there’s a good chance you will work with someone, if not a whole team, whose sole job is to manage the sound design for the production. But I often work on projects alone, for businesses who can’t afford a full production team, so I’ve simplified my own sound design workflow. This definitely won’t achieve the same result as a team of sound engineers, but I’ve noticed a pretty sizable improvement in my videos since focusing a little more on sound.
For my purposes, I’ve acknowledged the existence of four audio “categories” that I try to focus on in my own videos, and that I want to share with you today. Those four categories are dialogue, primary, ambient, and music. Now I am by no means claiming to be a sound expert, or even particularly knowledgeable on this topic, but these are a few simple ideas that, I think, have helped me create much better content.

Good information! I've been trying to get out more, too ... it just feels a bit easier to make interesting.
