How To Safely Eject SD Cards From The iPad!

On this short episode, I wanted to address a question that I get asked all the time, and that I had as well when I first started to use the iPad Pro for Photo and Video editing work. That question is, “How do you safely eject an SD card (or an external hard drive, thumb drive, etc.) from the iPad?” There doesn’t seem to be an option, as there is on Mac OS and Windows, to manually eject the SD card from the device, as to avoid potentially harming your data. So, where is the option?? How do you “Safely Eject Hardware” on an iPad??
///
Well, as it turns out, you do not need that option. iPad OS, Apple’s latest operating system for their tablet lineup, only keeps external storage devices active while you are utilizing them. This means that if you aren’t actively transferring the photos or working on them directly off of the storage device in an application, then you should be fine to remove your SD card or external hard drive without damaging or losing data.
When you press the button to safely eject hardware on a Windows PC, the only thing that happens is the system runs a quick check to make sure the drive is not being utilized in any applications. The reason that it is best to do this on a PC, is that the system may very well be utilizing a drive in multiple applications that you’ve opened and left running, or have closed, but certain threads of the application have remained running. On the iPad, it is essentially impossible for that drive to be active within the system if you are not physically utilizing it yourself.
So, I hope all you fellow creators of mine can feel liberated; you don’t need to press a virtual button to confirm that your drive is not in use; you are in control of your own destiny now!
Jokes aside, I hope you all enjoyed this video, and that I could answer some of the questions you may have. See you on the next one!

    Thanks SO much!! You are the first answer that I’ve found to this question after searching and searching. I couldn’t even find the answer in the owners’s manual of the device I’m using 🙄 I appreciate your thorough yet concise answer. Just the right amount of explanation without beating a dead horse. The iPad has destroyed several partitions and it was not in use i just unplugged the device and when i connected it to my Mac it required a repair which most times doesn’t restore and i loose the files on it. I found that the only way to safely eject is by closing the files app and turning off my iPad

    If you did oopsy and you need to fix it... on Windows you can run the following from the Command Prompt (chkdsk [drive identifier]: /F). On Mac, you can use the following in Terminal (diskutil repairvolume /Volumes/[drive identifier]/) PLEASE don't take my word for it. Google a little to learn more before using commands to fix data. cheers!

    I think it is not all time. I ejected a USB-C Samsung from my Ipad 2020 and ... surprise I couldn't recover my files. I had to format my USB-C from Windows to reuse my USB again. I would like an expensive device such as an Ipad or iPhone to have the option to eject safely any USB. Even Android has the option.

    I am using an iPad Pro 2020 for editing photos. I usually import into the Photos app. I used to use Panasonic cameras and recently bought a Sony. I have had 4 episodes in a month of losing hundreds of photos. I shoot only jpegs and when it loses pics the files show up with names but have no data on the card. I know they were there because I reviewed them on the camera. In several years with various iPads I have never had an issue with the Panasonics but since I got the Sony it keeps happening. Any thoughts?

    Hmm... my thought would be to import into the files app instead of photos app; at least to start off the troubleshooting-and see if this has any impact. That sounds difficult to root out potential causes due to the randomness of the issue, but I’ll do some research and see if I find anything!

    [citation needed] How do you know it's safe to eject, and that iPadOS works the way you describe? A lot of people on YT have opinions. I don't think it's true that "When you press the button to safely eject hardware on a Windows PC [or on a Mac], the only thing that happens is the system runs a quick check to make sure the drive is not being utilized in any applications." Doesn't it also flush any caches to volumes on that drive where changes have been buffered? And some of those changes could be due to system processes, not just apps that the user is actively using. In order to guarantee that that's not the case, you'd need some documentation. A corrupted disk volume is not a good thing.

    This isn't true at all. External SSD or HDD use write-cashing, so if you just unplug the drive it could generate corrupted files. It has happened to me and a lot of users.If your drive doesn't use write-cashing, its safe to just eject.
