13" iPad Pro vs 11" iPad Pro - Same, but Very Different

We can’t ignore that this is the first generation where the 11” and the 13” iPad Pros are finally sharing the same specs, where before hand, you’d be compromising by purchasing the smaller iPad Pro.
On the surface the two don’t seem to different, but as soon as you see them side by side, it’s very clear that Apple took a different approach when designing these. The 11” is a true tablet, the true embodiment of Steve Job’s original philosophy of the iPad, where it’s superior at a handful of things, and really bad at other things. Remember, the gen 1 iPad had a 9.7” display, which is smaller than every current iPad except the mini.
I share my thoughts on why this has and always will be a big dilemma for many of us.

I don’t fully agree with the conclusion or advice to be honest - I’ve also owned both 13 and 11, and ended up loving and using the 11” more. It does the same and the smaller form factor is just very convenient. The smaller screen size is really relative and I’ve never felt it’s too small or cramped, not in the slightest. While I do own a laptop, I can do lots of work on the 11” . Email, simple word or excel stuff all really no problem at all. For me the small form factor with these incredible (over the top?) specs makes this my favorite apple device. I’ve owned all 11” generations and just picked up the new one . Couldn’t be happier.

Good diagram. I don't think this is a hard decision. You've summarized it well. For folks that will mostly be using an iPad as a laptop, a 13" (whether Pro or Air) is the best choice. For folks who already have a device that serves as a computer (whether MacBook or 13" iPad) for demanding tasks, get a smaller iPad (whether Mini, regular, or Air) forgo the keyboard since you already have a computer device, and it's highly portable and inexpensive.

Great video… I have an ipad since gen 1 and - although I also always had a macbook in that period, I always have an ipad with me, wherever I go, and I find that the 11 is the best all round option. I have an M1 12.9 and the latest mini and while both are great devices, the 12.9 lives @home and is now very much either a second display for the macbook or used to write (I love typing on the large magic keyboard). The Mini is perfect for reading and is so light I always have it in a sling bag or so. But the 11 does it all - so I got a new 11 pro M4… still a comfortable size for the keyboard. Good for lighter days of work - so light and compact it literally disappears in your backpack and can be taken in a slightly larger sling. comfortable to use on plane and train tables, and I have my entire research library with me, can annotate documents and stay connected with colleagues. An excellent machine - and yes a bit overkill - but it gives a lot of pleasure to work on and given he time one spends on these devices that is also worth something… :-)

WOW this is awesome, someone who actually has both form factors and uses them probably how Apple intended! Your examples are insightful for the 11", especially the comfort factor for commuting/traveling, and the freedom that it gives you to work, albeit in a small form factor, it can still do everything on the go. I also started using my 12.9" a lot more once I connected it as a second display as well and it's made a LOT more sense since then. Thanks for sharing!

Great video and I think you've captured a lot of points. Have usually gone with the 11 as the best balance between portability and screen size (since I refuse to get a mini until its been updated). This time thinking of going the 13, as I feel that another point about it is that is it better for sharing. The bigger screen size is much better for looking at photos or video or content together rather than the 11.

Honestly this is another point that I wish I mentioned that you nailed. When using this with family or friends, the 13” is really a no brainer. The 11” works for sure, but the extra real estate is just so convenient, despite its extra weight and size. The 11” is definitely for personal use, to carry around the park or cafe when you’re enjoying some solo time and shooting off a few short emails at the same time.

I love my 2021 11-inch. But the pretty significant 100gram+ weight reduction on the 13” models was a big factor in ordering the larger model this time around. I primarily use the iPad in tablet mode but I don’t have a dedicated laptop and the times I do use my 11” that way it just feels a bit too small. Hoping that the lighter 13” will still be very comfortable for tablet usage while working better for laptop replacement for my purposes, but if not I’ll return it to Apple and grab the 11” instead.

As someone who has had the 12.9 m2 ipad pro I was really wanting to go back to the smaller ipad. In this sense a normal ipad size. My first ipad was 9.7 with the 6th gen. Then I got the air with the all screen design as I did not think the pro was a big enough uograde for the same pretty much ips panel on the 11 inch. I finally wanted the 12.9 cause the 256gb of then ipad air was holding me back and I wanted the better display. I got used to the 12.9. but the weight really changed how I use it. I never got the magic keyboard for it as I use procreate more than anything. But now that I am back in school I use my m1 macbook pro 14 and my ipad 12.9 m2 together more so than I thought which is great for an tandem display for my work flow. But I still missed the tablet side of things that complimentary device. I bought the m4 ipad pro 11 inch. And the size difference is kinda of shocking. Apart of me says I should just trade my 12.9 in for the 13 m4 and get the ruduce weight of the new one. But the other part of me say my m2 works just fine keep it. Use it how I am using it. And use the 11 inch as a tablet. The decison is difficult. I mostly use procreate so the bigger display is nice cause it is about the same size as a sheet of paper. But the smaller size weight makes it much nicer to use as a tablet. I am not sure I would use the magic keyboard. But the new ones magic keyboard looks way better than what i can get for my current 12.9 m2. Decision decision. First world problems I know.

Nah, honestly this thought process is probably like what almost everyone who currently has an m1 or m2 12.9”. It’s frustrating that apple has made such polarizing sizes because a 12” would be the best of both worlds, but for some reason they wanted to make it confusing by creating a screen the size of their laptop, which I understand, but only to limit the usage of the iPad. It’s all actually quite deliberate, where they draw strong lines to make us conform to them, which again, is 1st world problems. Even I if you got the 13” m4, you would always have in the back of your mind how much nicer the 11” is to carry around, while with the 11”, you’d always want the larger screen for note taking. It’s almost like apple wants us to buy both 🥲 at the end of the day, you’ll have to ask yourself is portability more important or is the larger screen more important, and in a month or two you’ll forget about the other size all together. Let me know what you decide!

Depends on your perspective on what an iPad should be. For me an iPad has to be more portable than a laptop, and that's a lot easier to say for the 11 inch compared to the 13.

    12 inches would be perfect

I've totally thought this, and I'm confident Apple's considered this as well, but ultimately having two polarizing sizes will probably sell more units :|

agreed, also when using as a second monitor to a macbook, 13" is bomb.

For sure, I think for a good number of people the 13" will be fine, but for those with slightly smaller hands it could definitely be a challenge!

Neither! Get a refurbished 14-inch MacBook Pro. A way more capable device at a better cost, that actually takes advantage of the power, unless you need the Pencil experience.

I have always had the 11 in iPad Pro. The 2018 and m1 model. Because of how thin and light the m4 lineup is, I decided to get the 13 inch. I travel a lot for work. Flying out of state 50 percent of the year. I can say that the bigger 13” is way better. The new lighter iPad is much easier to carry around even with the Magic Keyboard. I may not use it at home as much with the bigger size. But at the same time, I have a tv, and I don’t need to be on my devices as much when I am home. I will be keeping my 13 inch. Why? Lighter device makes the 13” more manageable, easier to type on the Magic Keyboard compared to the 11”. Does not hurt my hand compared to the older 12.9 inch. Bigger screen. Now, if you have weak muscles and brittle hands, go with the 11”. Me personally, I am tired of the small tablet

I love the 11 because of the compact size while being powerful. Throwing it in a small bag is love. I got the space black with the keyboard to match just so I could be stealthy lol 🥷

Honestly, really tempted to return mine for the black one 😬 and yeah, the ability to carry in a smaller form factor a powerful tablet is a reallly nice feature!
