Should You Buy a DJI Osmo 3 and Moment Lenses as a Beginner Filmmaker?

Фильм және анимация

This week I took some time to gauge whether the DJI Osmo 3 Mobile Gimbal and Moment Anamorphic lens really are the beginner filmmaker’s dreams come true, or whether your money would be better spent elsewhere.
Stay tuned as I put together my own short film with the iPhone 11 Pro Max, DJI Osmo 3, and Moment Anamorphic; so I can see for myself just how useful (or useless) this gear really is for a creator in the come-ups.

When I first played around with the DJI Osmo 3 Mobile Gimbal, kitted up with an iPhone 11 Pro, I was blown away by how big of a difference the gimbal actually made, and it got me thinking about what you could do with such a piece of gear; so I picked one up for myself! Shortly thereafter, I started noticing a trend hitting the trenches of Instagram and KZread-lenses that you can attach to your smartphone! One company, in particular, stood out to me for a few reasons. Moment cases made a gorgeous wood-backed photo case for iPhones which would allow you to attach some serious looking lenses, including a 1.33 anamorphic lens.
Fast forward a month or two and here we are; I finally have time to put this gear to the test and see if it truly is worth about as much as an entry-level DSLR. I decided to put together a short film, less than a minute long, but with a variety of shots, movements, and situations, in hopes of determining if the DJI Osmo 3 along with the anamorphic lens from Moment could instantly turn me into a film-making pro.
My conclusions? You probably could've guessed it. Don't get me wrong, the anamorphic lens adds a really cool look to your videos, and the DJI Osmo 3 works to make some shots that would never happen on an iPhone otherwise, look like a cakewalk. But it's still a phone, and let's be real: if you're recording short films on an iPhone, there are probably quite a few things that you could buy to improve your content before buying a gimbal and an anamorphic lens... Like a tripod or lights, or maybe you could even take that money and buy a DSLR! I think you'd be surprised to see just how big of a difference there still is between these photo-slinging beasts we call iPhones and a dedicated photography system like a Canon, Nikon, Fuji, or another brand of DSLR.

I’m an aspiring iPhone filmographer, and I loved your tips on how to have more stabile video, without the use of a gimble!

Great video(s). You make some excellent points, Alec. I did want to make a couple comments, though. Regarding the tilt with the anamorphic lens, I bought one for use on my Pixel 4XL, and noticed that mine appeared to be a little tilted, too. I found two things were contributing to that. First, the Moment case mount is a little sloppy, and the lenses don't always mount exactly square. Unlike the tele or wide lenses, the anamorphic displays some ... oddness ... if it's not straight. I also noticed that the mount on the lens itself was a little loose. Moment provides the little Allen wrench with the lens, which is intended to allow you to unlock the lens and turn it 90 degrees for vertical shooting (why you'd want to do that with an anamorphic lens is beyond me, but I guess someone must've thought it would be useful). Anyway, the point is, make sure that the lens is mounted "square", and the tilt should go away. If, indeed, the gimbal is sagging slightly due to the weight, there are counterweights (or coins and tape) to help balance the load better. As for external mics for phones that don't have mic/headphone jacks, Rode and Saramonic both now make their mics with either Lightning or USB-C connectors. One of Saramonic's mics even includes a headphone jack so you can monitor your audio while recording.

Moment make counter-balance weights for this kind of problem. You'll need them for heavier phones like the iPhone 11s+Moment lenses

Moment makes a very light weight case. You are using their heaviest case. Their are counter balance weights made by Ulanzi. All that said even though I own Moment Lenses, the Dji Osmo mobile 3 I find myself going back to the cameras base lenses because it is minimal. So all your points are well taken but their are times when the lenses can come in handy.
