Leica M3 vs Canon P [A Brief Comparison]

Фильм және анимация

This time around I want to take a look at the Canon P and compare it to the Leica M3. For those of us unwilling to hand our entire savings over to Leica, but who still want the amazing industrial design and rugged yet simple qualities of the Leica M3, there exists a camera that will satisfy both you and your wallet.
///
The Canon P [A Brief History]
Let me begin with a question; why do so many people still shoot on rangefinder cameras? Some will argue that early rangefinders maintained an image-quality advantage over their SLR counterparts thanks to the lens elements being closer to the image plane because there is no mirror taking up space within the camera body. Okay, that makes sense. Others make claims that being able to see the image you are taking without any “blackout,” otherwise known as the very short period when the mirror is flipped up in an SLR allowing film to be exposed, provides a clearer perspective of what is being captured. I would argue against this point. On an SLR, you are seeing what the lens is seeing; on a rangefinder, you are literally never seeing what the lens is seeing. If it were a matter of “follow through,” as you would hold your swing for a moment after you hit the ball in golf, then you might as well not be looking through the viewfinder at all; the clearest perception you’ll have of that moment of time around you is not through a viewfinder of any sort, but rather if you directly observe your surroundings. However, there are two arguments for rangefinders that make a lot of sense to me. Firstly, rangefinder cameras are compact and durable; this makes them great for street photography, but also for rugged conditions and travel. Secondly, and the reason I believe the Leica M3 is still so popular today, is that rangefinder cameras, especially Leicas, are ingenious pieces of industrial design. Quick to operate and easy to replicate the same actions on, these cameras put you in full control of your settings, without overwhelming you with inputs. Oh, and they are also nice to look at.
So, what if you find yourself drawn to an M3, but you don’t want to spend upwards of a thousand dollars on a camera body just to feel that industrial design? Que the Canon P rangefinder camera; looks familiar, doesn’t it?
Before we talk about this camera today, I think it’s only fair to give a little bit of background first. The Leica M3 was released in 1954, greeted by near-instant widespread popularity among professional photographers. With multiple framelines for 50, 90 and 135mm lenses, a large and life-like viewfinder, a highly accurate rangefinder system, and shutter speeds all the way down to 1/100th of a second, this camera was revolutionary in a lot of ways. So then, it makes sense that when the Canon P was released in 1958, and it also featured a 1:1 viewfinder, a 1/1000th second shutter, multiple framelines, including 35mm framelines, and just about every other feature the M3 had and then some, it was Canon’s most popular rangefinder of all time, with sales totals higher than every Nikon rangefinder combined.
So yes, the Canon P is basically a Leica M3 clone, with a few innovations to make the camera even easier to use for the everyday shooter. The rewind toggle is a knurled ring integrated with the shutter button. The frame counter is easy to read and automatically resets when the back of the camera is opened, and loading film is a breeze with the full-back film door. The rewind lever is cleverly hidden within the top-plate, lending to the aesthetically pleasing lines on this camera. Everything about this camera honestly seems like Leica was directly consulting for Canon on this one, and the best part? The Canon P is cheap! I mean, it’s not cheap, it’s a little pricey if we’re being completely logical here. But when compared to, what is seemingly, the Canon P’s closest competition, this camera is an incredible value!
So, if you’re pining after an M3 because of its beautiful design, simple functionality, and great compactness; you might consider this alternative. I know your wallet will thank me, and if you’re anything like me, I think you’ll fall in love with the Canon P just like I have.

I always thought that it was telling that when you read a lot of Leica posts on the net that they say 'Oh , you've got to get it CLA'd every couple of years ' while Canon 'P' posts just say ' Oh, just go out and shoot and enjoy ' .... The M3 has a nicer range/viewfinder (projected instead of reflected frameline, sharp-edged rangefinder patch) but everything else is better on the P. One fave feature: the shutter curtains are epoxy-coated stainless steel, while on the M they are rubber-coated cloth. Yes, the Canon curtains can get unsightly dents/wrinkles (which almost never affect its operation) but sunlight won't burn a pinhole through it, which can and does happen on all film Ms... and boy is that expensive to fix! Another bonus: unlike any Leica, the P's viewfinder is 100% life size, which means you can keep both eyes open while using it... it's like you're not looking through a camera at all, except the rangefinder patch and frame lines are just magically floating in your vision to show you what will be in the picture. QUESTION: The black paint job on your P looks really nice... did it come to you that way, or did you have it painted, and if so by whom?

I‘m having real trouble focusing with a film SLR, especially when I have to focus at a wide-ish apertures and the subject is moving, like I often do on the streets. Using auto focus feels very detached from the photography process and it can miss more than I’d like. When I’m shooting with a rangefinder, especially with my M5 I have dials for every setting I need. I can use all of them through muscle memory. And I can actually reliably focus moving subjects. The reason I shoot rangefinders and I’ll never be able to go away is that I’m completely responsible if the image gets messed up. I am taking the picture not the camera. This doesn’t go so much for the M6 since it’s finder flare is so bad, so often that it’s sometimes not really my fault when something isn’t in focus. Just because I haven’t said it enough, but I really prefer the M5. It’s build as the successor to the M3 so it’s still incredibly well made and the purest metered rangefinder experience. Another reason why I shoot rangefinders is that there’s almost no vibration from the shutter and no mirror, so I can handhold really long shutter speeds.

The 35mm SLR goes back to the mid-1930s (Exakta), almost as far as the Leica and Contax. However, the modern styled 35mm SLR with interchangeable lenses didn't start getting popular until the latter 1950s. Some of the reasons for such delay may be those mentioned in the video, but the primary reason was a matter of lens design. Until the late 1950s, wide angle lenses used optical designs which required that they be set close to the film plane, and therefore, they would infer with the operation of the reflex mirror in a SLR. This was overcome when a completely new lens design (retrofocus) was developed to allow the rear element of a wide angle lens to sit sufficiently far from the film to allow a swinging mirror to operate. The earliest of such lenses were relatively poor optically, which is why Contax, Leica, Nikon and Canon all made only RF bodies until the late 1950s. The pioneers of SLR development were the lesser companies, such as the East German camera industry (several brands from one organization), then Pentax (Ashai) and Miranda in Japan.

  • @ryandewerff

The P’s closest competition is probably the M2, not the M3 simply because of its viewfinder specs and 35mm framelines. If you like the P, I highly recommended the Canon VI-L which is the more “pro” version with selectable framelines, and the ability to mount secondary viewfinders with parallax correction.

What a lovely question. Why do people still shoot rangefinders. I've shot a lot of digital recent years and having a display type viewfinder shows you all technical data, what the photo is like and whatnot. Yet I just love focusing with a viewfinder. Perhaps some day I can justify a digital one. So, old Leica gear or my trysty Bessa R2A it is. Film costs a lot nowadays but it makes me think more and reject the worst shots before pressing the shutter. More is not always better.

Another reason to use a rangefinder is there is no reflex mirror so no mirror slap which can give you camera shake especially with medium format cameras. Personally I find the rangefinder easier to focus with bad eye sight too. Then again my Zorki and FED rangefinders have built in diopters so no need for my glasses.

Nice review on the mechanics, actually the reason (my take) is the technology didn’t die for the rangefinder, due to the makers. Same reason the mechanical watch is preferred over the quartz, both are amazing, but who makes it counts.

A couple points on the viewing window: there is air around the capture image area that allows you to see what is coming into the frame, and leaving. Also the other eye integrates well with the image taking experience because you are using that eye to see what is happening beyond the camera body.

Why do I stil shoot with rangefinder cameras? I believe I don't have a proper, objective reason, other than simply "because I want". Is rangefinder more compact than SLR? In general yes, but there are also really compact SLRs like Olympus OM-1 or Pentax ME, which fits easily in my jacket's pocket. How about silenceness? A bit, but in most of my daily situations, a silent camera like M3 vs loud one like Pentax 67 don't differ significantly on the street. Most people simply ignore them. OK, perhaps I need to be in such situation where being silent is a must, like watching opera. BTW, if I'm on bigger budget range, definitely would pick the Leica. Not because it's made in German, but because it has access to more modern lenses. You can't afford the latest fancy 50 Summilux ASPH APO bla bla bla? No problem. Zeiss and Voigt provide one which is more affordable. On the other side, beside Voigt, there's no modern screw mount lenses for Canon P. You are practically stuck with old lenses, which is not necessarily a bad thing, though. Lenses are just tools, eventually in the end it depends on your artistic taste.

It took the Japanese 50 years to come up with their own stuff.
