Shooting Film Downtown During Quarantine [Portra 160 35mm]

Фильм және анимация

This time around we’ll take a little trip around downtown Salt Lake City, Utah with the ole’ Canon T70, for my first time shooting Kodak Portra 160, one of the most iconic film stocks in existence. Whether or not you’re using it for its intended use of portrait and wedding photography, or you’re taking to the streets with Portra, this film stock is one that you can’t miss.

Initially developed in 1998 for both 35mm and 120mm applications, this magical chemical composition created by Kodak was designed for portraits and weddings, though its applications are far more widespread nowadays. The one most notable attributes of Portra, which was emphasized by Kodak when this film came out, is its aptness to perfect scans, something which I was able to test out myself, with the help of my Epson V600. Even using a 200 dollar scanner for my very first time, and scanning negatives for my first time in general, this set of photos turned out absolutely better than I could’ve expected, and I can only give credit to Portra 160 for that.
One downside to Portra is the cost, but after shooting on Portra 400 for several months, and now having shot on Portra 160, I have to say that I do understand the demand, and therefore, the cost. This film is addictive, once you see your first developed roll of Portra, you’ll be back for more before your local film store can say “cha-ching.” This being said, I do want to make it my mission to find another film stock with comparable quality for a price I can sustain without eating microwaved oatmeal packets for every meal.
The grain of Portra is incredibly fine and natural, the colors are subtle, but not muted, and most of all, this film doesn’t seem to have a scene or scenario in which it doesn’t thrive. So if you haven’t tried it out for yourself, I highly suggest shooting a few rolls of Portra for yourself and seeing what you think.
