Shure MV7 VS. 40-Year-Old Microphone! [Do You Need to Spend $250?]

Фильм және анимация

The Shure MV7 is a capable microphone right out of the box, well suited for individuals looking to podcast, stream, or do semi-professional audio work without any of the headache of an XLR cable and the required interface that comes along with it. Practically speaking, the Shure has many awesome use-case scenarios that make it an appealing purchase at $250-but today I want to do something a little bit different. I want to see how the Shure compares to a microphone 36 years its senior: the Peavey PVM 45.
///
WARNING: This test is not particularly practical; it is only to showcase how you can, in fact, use a very old microphone and get fairly similar results to a newer one.
I know that not everyone is going to go out after watching this video and buy a Peavey PVM 45 to use on their podcast, but that’s not really the point I’m after. More than anything, I wanted to demonstrate that thinking about audio quality only when you’re looking at your next microphone purchase, might not be the best mindset to have. Instead, I would recommend thinking about your specific needs and budget first, then finding a microphone that will work well for you specifically.
I’m always surprised at how many people go out there and buy the most expensive piece of equipment they can afford, often times without thinking about the use cases for and the alternatives to that product. Whether it be lighting, sound equipment, sliders, etc., think about what you need, and how you might just be able to spend half as much, maybe even a tenth as much, to achieve exactly what you want to do.

    Thank You for review, Alec! I had almost same question: I was looking for some good audio setup for home - skype/zoom calls (maybe streaming in the future) aI guess many of us stuck home with this all pandemic. I never had any experience with any mics (accept those one that integrated in webcams) - so i dived deep in to the amazon customers reviews and KZread reviews - after almoust 3 weeks of reserch i found 2 setups: My first setup was Shure SM57+A81WS (they use this setup in the White House for ove 3 decades and this combination sounds very close to legendary SM7b)+ Audient evo 4 audio interface+10feet Xlr cable & some decent 100$ boomarm like Rode PSA1 or Blue Compass - all these cost aproximetly 100+30+130+20+100=380$- And i was redy to buy it butabout a month ago they showed MV7 - and in all review they say that it's really great mic (though it doesn't sound that close to sm7b - it looks good, feels good, and have 2 conection options) -Another week of reviews and i've got my second setup: Shure MV7 + A7WS+ boomarm (250+30+100)=380$ - same money. I still didn't decided which one to buy, we don't have MV7 here in ukrainian shops yet, so i still have some time to thinks - what do realize though - to create MV7 is very very clever move by Shure - I feel like it'll be bestseller - all those young boys and girls who want to start streaming at twich or KZread they see those podcasters, streamers like Rogan, Shroud etc - and they think - i want same mic - than they make simle research and realize that Sm7b costs 400$ and they need to invest much more to make it work and than they see MV7 - looks simmilar, sound almost the same, no need to buy audiointerfaces with low noise preamps, cloudlifters etc, - 350$ for mic with boomarm to look like Joe Rogan. Now all those buyers will go and spend money from mom's wallets - as 350$ is very different than 400+++ and much less complicated to setup.

    btw Shure RK345 or A7WS windscreen instead of stock that comes with MV7 - They say that it's bit tight to fit but decrease plosives well. Here some german gentleman shows how poor stock MV7 pop filter is: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iHxo29hsYae_ks4.html Start watching from 10:30
