Replacing the Fill Valve
Diagnostic
The Toilet Fill Valve controls the amount of water in the tank of the toilet. This assembly should be replaced if it begins to not shut off correctly, becomes damaged, or corroded. To minimize any disruptions in service, it is suggested that the Fill Valve be replaced every five years as part of regular toilet maintenance.
Parts
A new fill valve assembly can be purchased at hardware or plumbing supply stores. The package should include the Fill valve assembly, refill tube, lock nut and any gaskets.
Tools
The tools needed to replace the Fill Valve are a pair of rib joint pliers, an adjustable open-end wrench, and a small plastic bin.
Replacement
Begin the replacement of the toilet fill valve by removing the tank's lid, turning off the water supply valve, and flushing the toilet.
If the toilet already has an existing Fill Valve, and the base is in good condition, then the fill valve may be quickly replaced by reaching to the base of the fill valve and pulling up the lock ring, removing the refill tub, and sliding the Fill Valve off of its base. The new Fill Valve is installed by simply removing the base that came with it and sliding it onto the existing base in the toilet. Reach behind the Fill Valve and snap the lock ring down into place. Then attach the refill tube to the overflow tube and adjust the new fill valve for optimal water level.
If the Fill Valve base in the toilet is not in good condition, then the entire unit will need to be replaced as follows.
With the tank empty, position a plastic bin to collect water under the water supply hose and unscrew the hose from the base of the tank, having any water drain into the plastic bin below. Now with an adjustable open-end wrench, or rib joint pliers, unscrew the lock nut located on the shank of the fill valve. With the nut removed the entire assembly can be pulled out of the tank. The old assembly should be placed into the plastic bin as it may continue to drain water.
With the old assembly removed, take the new unit and adjust the height to best suit the height of the tank and overflow tube, usually around 1-inch below the tank's edge. Insert the threaded end into the hole where the previous assembly was removed. Position the new assembly and thread the lock nut by hand securing the tube upright.
Once hand tight, secure the nut a quarter turn further with the rib joint pliers to insure a watertight seal. Now re-attach the water supply hose to the fill valve's shank. Place the fill valve's refill hose into the overflow tube. The refill hose must not extend below the tank's water line or water will constantly siphon from the tank.
Most fill valve kits should include a metal clip or angle adaptor that, when installed, will prevent the refill tube from going below the water line. Once in place, turn on the water-supply valve and the tank will begin to fill. Make any adjustments to the water level by sliding the adjustment clip, located on the fill valve, to change the height of the float-cup. The tank's water level is best at about 1-inch below the top of the overflow tube located in the center of the toilet. Inspect the new connections to make sure that they are not leaking water, and flush the toilet to test the toilet's function. Once in order, replace the tank's lid to complete the project.

It’s currently 4AM and also my 20th birthday. I’m staying at my grandmas house and offered to fix her toilet since I’m spending the night. It wasn’t flushing so I filled the tank and flushed it and it worked like normal. My grandma was happy but I wasn’t. After “fixing” the tank all I could hear was a *hissing* sound. Not loud but annoying. My room is not to far from the bathroom so the hissing was haunting me. I tossed and turned but couldn’t sleep, eventually I caved and grabbed my phone to figure this out. As I start watching the video I see how easily the fill valve cap pops off. So I did so, however, I wasn’t aware you had to cut off the water. So as soon as it came off water blasted me in the face and the cap went flying into the tub. I soaked, forcing my hand over the valve, and trying to reach for the cap. I finally managed to get the cap out of the tub and then came the struggle of forcing the cap onto the valve. The water then got colder so my hands started going numb, I was so close to just popping the lid for the tank back on and play it off in the morning. Thank god last second the cap locked in place and the water stopped! So to anyone trying to fix their fill valve, PLEASE make sure the water is cut off!

this JUST happen to me. I made the adjustment put the lid back on and all was quiet on the western front. all the sudden... POOOW!KLONK!... the freakin lid popped up and i heard water flowing so i removed the lid to inspect and splish splash that was my ass. the valve literally broke off and water was gushing. water all over. the floor, my clothes. the kitty litter. it was a fun time. and of course as im fighting this raging rapid wild river, it finally dawned on me...TURN OFF THE WATER VALVE! three towels and a trip to home depot later i was back in order. i will be telling this story to my kids one day

I'm not so sure. In a quick look, my new one has a bottom piece that looks different and maybe has a check valve inside of it. My old one has a standoff inside from the bottom of the tank up about an inch to where the tank fill outlet vents are. So I don't think I'm going to try and save a little bit of trouble with this. It's not like I can save plastic or money or anything like that because you can't just buy the top half. I'll do a tiny little bit extra of work and just use the whole assembly as it just came new in the box. Seems rather hack to me to try and save a few minutes and then when you have a problem later You can't figure out why something's not working right and then you have to take it all apart and dig out the piece that you didn't use anyway. Maybe you've already thrown that away so you're back to Lowe's or Home Depot buying a whole new one again

Fixed it! all I needed was my hands! The toilet was squealing while just sitting there doing nothing. I've watched 3 videos now on how to fix it and this is the first to actually show how to use the adjustment clip on the fill valve. I didn't need to replace anything, just adjusting it stopped the squeaking!!! So happy right now!!!

Thank you for instructions on how to remove the valve stem. I fixed the toilet, without buying additional parts. Rinse inside the fill valve head - wasn't sure if the cap came off, didn't want to break it, and the weight guide pole/valve stem, with soap and HOT water. Cleaned out the gunk caused by years of cold water residue buildup. Remove the rubber plug, pops right off, and clean it thoroughly. I also wrapped soft wire around the little metal ball at the base of the flush handle. It kept slipping out the plug. Put it all back together... A piss and 4 flushes later for good measure, BAM! I'm now officially a plumber, unofficially, more experiences to come. But this fix should suffice for a few years. Cheers, mate.

Thank you for this simple to follow video! I replaced the fill valve assembly today all by myself by following the instructions here rather than the cumbersome package insert. So glad I did as it only took me about 45 minutes running back and forth between the bathroom and video to mimic every step. The only addition I would make is to wear gloves when threading the water valve as mine was quite black and stained my thumb. It is now my badge of honor!! :)

Great video! Was able to do our two toilets because of this instruction. Thank you so much. I had a problem with the lock nuts on the shank of the fill valves. They end up almost molded on after awhile. It is a semi-common problem from what I could tell by googling it. One I ended up sawing off. The other I tried to saw off, but I couldn't get close enough to where it met the toilet. I even tried to melt it with a utility lighter, but it didn't do anything. Luckily I found a Home Depot employee who told me to stick a screw driver in there and then hammer. It worked. So while this was a five-star video, I just want to warn people they may have trouble with that lock nut.

Sorry, anytime a Home Depot employee tells you to do something how many are probably better to do the opposite. Especially when they tell you to stick a screwdriver into something and start hammering and you're working with a porcelain tank. You're very lucky you didn't end up having to buy a new toilet. Then you would have a lot more to deal with. And Home Depot would have sold you a whole new toilet instead of just the valve

I was frustrated to see the water still dripping after the valve replacement. I was certain I have to replace the fill valve until I saw your video. This was perfect. My toilet had been running forever. And I'm pretty stupid when it comes to things like this. When one toilet had this issue, i had to shell out too much money. With this guide and tools i was able to do it myself. This was a lifesaver. And wallet-saver!

+Tina Moran - It went well except I failed the first time to put the gasket on the new one and water leaked. once I discovered the old one had a gasket I took it off and put it on the new one and it worked perfectly. this was my very first time attempting a fix it problem in the bathroom so I feel pretty good about it! : )

Yay! My first floor toilet works again! I got confused by righty-tighty-lefty-loosey in this case because the nut on the underside of the tank is upside-down, so it's righty-loosey-lefty-tighty. It took me a while to figure that out and I tightened it a lot while trying to remove it. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. You are a wonderful person!

It's not backward. If you were to lie on the ground and look up at the but it would be clear that it's standard lefty-loosey. It only seems backward when you reach under the tank from a kneeling position because you're looking at the rotation from the opposite side.

I had the same problem! I was tightening it, instead of losening it and the maintenance guy used pliers and tightened it really tight when he was here last (about 5+ yrs ago)! Same thing with the water knob. Why is it that everything is installed in the tightest back corner where it’s so difficult to get to, besides everything needing tools to loosen up and remove???
