Fix for water leaking into toilet pan (push-button flush)
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This video looks at the fix for the three main reasons that water leaks into the toilet pan from the cistern. A simple washer/seal replacement can often be performed to resolve these, saving on the cost of a plumber for the fix.
This video is specific to leaks into the toilet pan for push-button toilet flushes. It looks and dismantles the fill valve (water inlet for the cistern), as well as removing the flush valve (the outlet from the cistern to the pan).

18/10/21 I live alone and water has been leaking into my toilet pan for sometime without my knowledge. I spoke to the only plumber who called me (they are all busy) and quoted £375 for a new toilet, as what you just showed was impossible to do! Thank you. I just want to turn the water off until a proper plumber returns my call, but you have really helped me! "I am a 77 year young female plumber to be!"

I would recommend you never use the plumber who quoted £375. I guarantee your final price will be well above this due to the fact they are a con artist.

The part costs £7-£45 you can get a decent one that you will find in most toilets for £15 the job should take no more than an hour. I did mine which was in an awkward situ it took me little over 10 minutes. The only tool I used was an adjustable spanner you might need a screwdriver too.

Just on tip you never mentioned, when you replace the flush valve you must look at the old one and take the name and number, you need to get exacty the same one to fit the other part of the fitting which is below the close coupled with. If you buy the wrong one you will have to take the world pan and the cistern apart to fit the flush valve. So when your correct flush valve arrives from eBay it's simple to turn into the bottom fitting. You will then have a spare bottom fitting which will come with the flow valve. Good luck
Watched a few related videos but this one is by far the clearest explanation for this type of closed system. Thank you.
Watched this morning as we've had a problem all week and haven't been able to find a plumber. Brilliant, went to local B&Q for the parts and hubby and I replaced the part and have solved the problem Thank you!! Our confidence rating has shot up!
brilliant video so well explained. You’ve saved me a fortune as I thought I would have to get a plumber but I’ve been able to solve the issue myself with your help. Thank you.
Huge thanks for this, had no clue how to fix it but you explained it and showed it so clearly it’s done the job 👍🏼
Well done!! Here I am 8pm at my folks place fixing toilet with running water issue with help of your detailed video! Figured out the problem- stuck flush valve! Your video saved me a ton of time diagnosing and adjusting. Bravo!!
Thank you! This is very well explained and I managed to do it myself in 15 mins thanks to you!
Thanks so much for this mate! Saved me getting a plumber out, so we're very grateful for the time you have taken to make this video.
Genius, I didn't realise it just clipped out and thought the whole thing would need removing and sealing. Saved me a plumber, thank you.
Certainly worlds more intelligible and professional compared with the first few videos as lined up by KZread. Very effective instruction. Thank you.
Great video , easy to understand , well explained and most importantly helped me solve my own issue in just a few short minutes . Thanks
3 minutes in and I am very impressed with the efficiency, clear explanations and overall informative approach. I wish he could explain/teach all the videos.

An excellent video on fixing three main leaks in a dual flush toilet cistern. Very well explained. Thank you very much!
Very articulate in explaining everything! Clear and concise. Amazing 👏
Definitely the best of these toilet cistern water leak videos, by far! I now feel certain we can fix our troublesome tank that's topping itself up every 10-15 mins. Thanks very much!

Thanks for the feedback, it's really appreciated. I hope your fix hours as well as you're hoping!
Thanks ! Great explanation for someone who has absolutely no clue what to do! Ordered a new outlet part as still a very slight trickle after cleaning it 👍
Perfect video for my problem - toilet running continuously. Exactly as you highlighted, the flush valve wasn’t relocating correctly and despite cleaning it the problem continued. A visit to the plumbers merchant with the entire unit and a replacement slotted straight back in and the issue was resolved. Cost £18.32. Time taken to remove and refit 10 minutes. At the plumbers merchants remember to specify whether the toilet is push-button or lever operated as the mechanisms are not interchangeable. A big thumbs up for clear concise instructions, they certainly gave me the confidence to have a go.
Very clear explanation. Took me only 5 minutes to fix my flush problem after watching your video. Thank you !
Just fixed my toilet and saved a few hundred in the process. KZread is a great tool! Thank you!
This is super helpful, crystal clear explanation and I can confidently now resolve it! Thank you
Absolutely brilliant. I’ve just fixed our cistern thanks to this 👍🏻😉
The tip to change only the flush valve was fabulous! Screw out the old one, screw in the new one and job done. Very smart guy! Thank you again for saving us time and money. Well done!
This was the 2nd I watched - this is the most simple yet comprehensive !
Very well explained, gave me the confidence to tackle it and have it done in less than five minutes once I got the part
I have never been soooooo happy finding out that this was such a simple solution. You are a blessing!
Simple, straightforward instruction. Thanks
Thank you gives me the confidence to investigate my same issue during lockdown.
Life saver, watched this at midnight after constant filling, so removed flush and cleaned seal as explained and it worked.....very helpful and well explained, thanks.
Thanks so much for this. I’ve just refitted the flush valve, reduced the water and saved myself a fortune!
This really helps. Thank you for posting this video. In my case, only the button was broken. Managed to find a replacement. But this video helped me to understand what exactly is required to fix. The tutorial helped me to understand when exactly a valve replacement is required. Instead of buying the whole valve, i fixed the issue only with the flush button. Flush button are available for sale in most hardware stores. Take care
Thank you friend .. Your distinctive voice made this precise demonstration absolutely clear & Comprehensive .
Have just fully asserted my dominance over a toilet that was running on. Thank you for the helpful video. Your explanation of how the system worked as opposed to how proprietary parts worked was really useful. Have a good weekend.
Thank you for fully explaining this flushing mechanism. Very professional presentation.
great video. very clearly explained what the issues might be. I now feel confident enough to tackle this myself.
Clearly and thoroughly explained. I've looked at 3 other vids; this is the clearest by far. Thanks and I'm subscribing.
Good well informed video, constant filling was causing a co densation issue. Cleaned out the diagphram, adjusted the float level to below the overflow, tested all good. Thank you for sharing.
Great video, so well explained. Had the local water supplier out for a faulty valve at the supply and our toilet inlet pulled a load of grit. Constant overflowing. Took the top off the inlet and cleaned all the grit out of the diaphragm and inside washer. Now as good as new. Thank you sir 🙏🏻
Thank you so much! Saved me a couple hundred dollars! It seems fixed. Really appreciate the clear tutorial.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’m a very handy man but always busy with work and I had been putting off fixing our leaky toilet for months but it has been ANNOYING me sooo much. Eventually today I found some time but have never had to repair something like this before, your video was spot on and I diagnosed the issue in seconds, cleaned away the limescale and bloo cleaner scum, hey presto, leak sorted and it didn’t cost me a penny. 👍
I didn't think I'd spend today watching KZread videos on how to fix toilets... but your video is very helpful and for now it's solved my issue! Thank you for posting it.
I have same issue with flow valve but design is different. Always a good idea to keep the information on new unit so that replacement spares can be sourced. Back to bathroom. Very clear explanation. Thanks.
I have watched several videos on this topic. This one is leagues ahead in being both comprehensive and not waffling. Great job!
Thank you very much! Your simple guide help me to fix the issue in minutes.
Well done - very helpful video. A slight adjustment with a screw driver on the inlet valve cured the overflow problem. Stuck a piece of tissue under the pan rim to ensure no further leak. Thank you
I think there’s a reason your video came up first! Perfectly explained. Slightly strange, but there was no outer washer on the fill valve on ours. I cleaned the inner one up and it works fine again. Thank you for your valuable information 🙏
Thanks, looks straightforward and has given me what I need to know to sort my problem out!
Thank you so much for this. With hubby at work, I felt completely helpless until I found this video. Issue resolved, at least temporarily, and now I know what to do if it happens again. It would be even more helpful to include how to find, recognise and turn off the isolation valve. Thanks again 🙂

Cheers! In my case a bit of loose silicone in the cistern had got caught under the seal of the flush valve.. a two minute job removing it, thanks. - a very clear video. Saved me a lot of hassle. .
Thank you so much! I have the identical system and your video helped immensely in sorting the problem!
Really straight forward vid with clear explanation of what’s going on - 👍🏻
Truly invaluable. We appreciate this immensely.
Thank you so much! This gave me the confidence to pull it all apart and find the fault,m and solve the problem! Very well explained and clear

No problem at all Tim. Your comment made me smile, as confidence is the key from videos like this. I always know some people will have different issues, so if I can explain things in a way that gives confidence, then I've hopefully helped. Thanks for your comment, and I'm delighted to hear it helped you solved your issue.

@@Artexic how do I stop the water from running into the overflow? My toilet kind a different from yours
@Artexic
2 жыл бұрын
@@dwaynegreen5556 Hi Dwayne, even if it looks different you'll still have an inlet and outlet like I showed so should still have the same potential scenarios. If the overflow pipe is in use it is probably the float positioning or the seal in your inlet. If you identify the inlet you should be able to follow similar checks on your unit All the best
Thank you so much, before I finished watching the video I fixed mine for 3 days none stop. Thank you
Thanks for the info , this is exactly what I needed to know , brilliant :)
A clear and well-presented video. Thank you so much for sharing,
Thank you so much, very well explained, solved the problem in a few minutes!
Thanks for taking the trouble to film, edit and post, just what I have been looking for.
Thank you for the video, very helpful. It's the middle of the night and I couldn't sleep because my toilet was dripping and kept refilling. It turned out the flush valve just needed unscrewing and once I put it back in it stopped. I wouldn't have known to try that without this video.
Just fixed our toilet thanks to your clear, concise explanation - thank you!

Same here. I dread to think how much water I've wasted before finding this clip.
Really helpful video, thank you so much for making this and explaining things so clearly
Thanks for the video. I didn't know how to dismantle the inflow. Turned out my float had dirt in it causing it to stick. Cleaned it and way ya go.
Good video overall. I have not see the fill valve structure opened up before. Usually, I end up replacement the entire thing. Good to know there are options. Thank you.
Brilliant ! I managed to fix my toilet, i would never have believed it possible. Thank you so much
Great video. Extremely clear and to the point. Helped me diagnose my issue. Thanks.
Fantastic video! I followed your instructions and sorted my leaking issue in 6mins.
Thanks for your comprehensive demonstration. Saved me valuable time
On the back of this brilliant tutorial, I have cleaned hard water scale off of the outlet valve seal and seal seat. The pan is no longer filling up. Many Thanks.
This looks so very helpful.. I have the same problem on both upstairs and now downstairs toilets - I now know what to look for, and I'm pretty sure I can fix both of them.
been looking for a video that explains this problem for ages. Thank you for this solution, just what I needed. Thanks.
Thank you ! Thank you !Thank you !Thank you for this video!! Saved me money getting a plumber in so many times. Thank you !
Well explained, had a problem with the fill valve, thanks for explaining how it works and showing inside.
very well explained, thank you so much. Saved my day and money. There were little wood stiches attached to the diafram. Cleaned them and now it works perfect.
I just fixed my flush by watching your video , Thanks a lot
Thank u so much for this video. It fixed my fill valve and saved me $600 to change the entire toilet bowl suggested by two plumbers. Luckily I didn't listen to the plumbers. I only opened the fill valve, gave the rubber ring a good rinse and it works again. I still can't believe I can actually fix a toilet bowl system myself .
Following this, resolved my issue in no time. Thank you
Saved me I live alone too .. and I was surprised I can fix things 😀 thanks to you 🙏🏻
useful, straight to the point, no-nonsense video. Good Stuff
Very useful video. Feel confident I should be able to fix my elderly friend’s issue. Thank you.
Really excellent very helpful and easy to follow. Bought new input valve which easily fixed the problem after some hours of grafting with Dudley minisystem. Many thanks. David
Thank you this helped me out, and i like the timings provided
Thank you, mine got fixed by watching yours. Brilliant!
Thanks for sharing on the strip down of the inlet valve. I took mine apart to find small bits of grit or whatever it was. But after a clean up " NO LEAKING OVER FLOW" thanks for sharing that info 👍
Brilliant explanation, thank you. My float was far to high, 2 seconds to move it down and it’s fixed.

Very useful video. I was just about to lose all hopes when I bumped into this video. Thank you Artexic
Thank you very much, helped me fix my flush which had an issue with the intake valve.
Thank you so much this helped big time. My problem was water was constantly running so happy you showed what to look at thanks again.
same thoughts as others here - saved a fortune with just a wiggle in the right place - and i feel like an engineer! ty
just what i needed to know! thankyou, things are working perfectly now! The trickiest bit was the flush valve removal-- finding the centre of the clicks to withdraw it - a mirror on a stick was really helpful to see where the plastic locator was positioned relative to the exit slot..
Thank you. The instructions are very clear.
Excellent video, thank you sooooooo much.....concise and to the point, outstanding.
Really helpful, thanks. I now know which bit is faulty, and what I need to do to fix it. 👍
Thank you very much! Our bog used to drip water so I took out the seal from flush valve and replaced it using a £2.29 part from Toolstation!

Good knowledge and clear concise way of passing it on .. 10/10
Very helpful - sorted out 5 minutes after watching this....Thank you...(Al).
Excellent demo. So clear and concise. Many thanks. Now I just have to get on. cheers.
Hi. Thanks for this very well explained video. Successfully replaced my fill valve n now flush valve is under testing after clean :) the only thing I’d add, my fill valve had a flexihose connecting on the bottom n u may need a new seal there. Very useful and saved 90£ to a woman who never dipped her hands into a toilet :)
Fixed our toilet because of your video, much appreciated my dude.
Hi, thanks for the informative video. Works a charm. One extra hint that I used was to turn the supply off and leave overnight. The cystern emptied so I knew it was the washer at the base of the flush unit and not the supply washer. Thanks again.

Exactly what I did. £2.95, and only a couple of minutes to fix. I wonder what a plumber would've charged me!!
Excellent video, thank you...... it sorted my issue in 10 minutes......a little bit of blue loo desolvable clear plastic didn't desolve and was sat on the washer hole rim.👍
