Fix a Toilet That Keeps Running

This video shares several methods for fixing a toilet that keeps running. Your toilet tank has a fill valve, flush valve, and flapper. And it's these parts that ultimately lead to the toilet running. My $116 water bill could have been prevented by simply replacing the $5 flapper.
The second way a leak occurs is when the flapper chain gets stuck between the flapper and flush valve. If you encounter this just trim the chain so that it doesn't drape below the flapper. Problem solved.
Sometimes the water in the tank is too high. If this is the case it will run over the overflow pipe and cause the tank to refill. You need to lower the tank's water level to about 1 inch below the overflow pipe. Watch the video for a more in depth explanation.
A toilet that keeps running is annoying, not to mention expensive. I'm sharing my tips so that you don't suffer from a $116 water bill like me. Hopefully these tips help you with your project.

Thank you for explaining all Three ways that could be the problem. Every other video I found only spoke of the flush valve, but it was our fill valve that was bad. Adjust the float didn't work, but your video put us on the right track to investigate further. My 14 year old son and I watched your video, discussed what we thought was wrong, investigated, discovered it was the valve and not just the float, watched more videos, bought parts, and fixed it today! It was a good project for us to do together. Thank you.

I JUST fixed my running toilet. The commode was a 2018 install, so it had the knob adjustment for the water level built in. A simple few twist to the level, negative (-) to reduce the water level and "WALA". Magic. No more running toilet and no money spent.💪🏾 Thank you for this amazingly handle and to the point video. I'm a DIY girl and this did the trick.

at 5:40 you talk about replacing the whole assembly. I was about to do this today with the exact same model as you have. What I learned after buy a replacement and reading the instructions that came with it, is that it's quite serviceable. All you do is turn the top half with the cap and arm a quarter turn counter-clockwise. It comes lose and then you can clean sediment out of the gasket. I had calcium build up. Do this with the water off. After that, take a cup or glass and put it over the exposed part to prevent water spraying everywhere. Turn the water back on and let the unit it flush any remaining sediment out. Replace the cap with a quarter turn clockwise. It was that simple. I let this toilet overflow for two weeks without realizing I could have fixed it in minutes. In retrospect it seems like regular maintenance, especially with hard water. The brand I have that looks like yours is fluidmaster. Newer versions have a nice feature that eliminate constant refill due to a faulty drain flap. It's called leak sentry. It only allows refill after using the flush handle, it doesn't allow refill when the tank is constantly draining due to a weak gasket. It's a bit more expensive at $20 CAD but I think it's worth it considering my flaps always end up failing in a few years due to my water supply. As a bonus you can use the 'leak sentry' to disable the refill value temporarily (and quickly) while you service the flap gasket. No need to bend over and reach behind the toilet to shut of the water. Sounds trivial I know but It's actually pretty nice to have.

Thank you so much for this detailed video! We had a leak inspector take the toilet apart today and leave without re-calibrating the float or turning the water back on, and I was so worried the bathroom would flood because when I turned the water back on myself the water just kept filling the tank! I'm relieved it was so easy to address and very grateful I didn't have to call the landlord and the plumber back just for this. I realize this is an old video and you may not still be looking at the notifications but truly this was so helpful! You saved a millennial's life today lol

My wife kept on saying that the toilet was running. I didn't pay attention until I got my water bill this month and noticed my bill had doubled!!!! Decided to KZread it and you have saved me a trip to the hardware store and frustration. Saw your video and checked my toilet and it turns out the floater was too high and just like you said it in the video, the water water overfloating at the overfloat tube. Adjusted the height and flushed the toilet and voila!!!! Thank you so much for your video.

The last suggestion was not necessarily the last resort. You can pull off the cap on the valve and then remove the top of the valve by turning it counterclockwise and lifting it to expose the rubber diaphragm. Pop that off and hold a cup upside down over the top of that valve. Turn on the water so that it shoots up and into the cup, instead of the ceiling, to clean out the debris. Turn the water back off and after wiping out the debris from the diaphragm reinstall everything. If the diaphragm is worn out then you will have to replace it or install a new flush valve. It is always good to have a spare flush valve on hand for emergencies. It's also a good idea to not attempt plumbing repairs on a weekend or on holidays because if you break something, you want to be able to get a real plumber as soon as possible. We've learned that lesson the hard way.

I just want to say thank you for this video.. I had watched a few videos on how to stop the water filling the bowl, it just would fill and make a sound as if it was flushing yet still filling up with water, the valve is clean the water is at level, and I turned the screw to lower the float and it stopped, it stopped before when I just ran the water to clean the valve and kept filling up so hopefully it will stop, but thank you

Jeff Patterson hello Jeff! I hope you're doing well, I just want to let you know that our toilet is still wanting to fill the bowl, whilst the tank is at max level, it's like it just runs through a tube with a hole in it, it's only been a couple days that it has been running again since a week ago, I adjusted the float again to very very low....

I bet you can fix it EnzoFuturistic - start by making sure the water level is 1 inch below the overflow valve. Adjust your fill valve float to do this. If that doesn't work then see if your flapper needs to be replaced. You can then replace the fill valve if the toilet continues to run. It costs about $10.

Not to sound so dumb, I don't mean to! How on earth do men know how to do this stuff "automatically?" Do they have no fear in playing around with stuff? Or were they built to just know this stuff in their heads? I'm impressed! I had to have my father RIP, show me everything with the car, and van. How to change oil, clean the carborator, and such... I didn't know how to do anything like that without him.... WOW.

American Doctor, nope. After 30 plus years of feminist girl power messages drilled into kids by school curriculum and popular culture and yet men and women still choose largely different career paths. It's almost as if men and women naturally have different interests? Nah, it must be the patriarchy or something.
