How Sitting Destroys Your Body
Since the 1950s, the number of office jobs has increased by 83%. At the same time, the number of physically active jobs have decreased from 50% in 1960 to less than 20% now. Although it seems harmless, sitting is harmful for us.

Since the 19th century, the number of office jobs have steadingly increased. Although office jobs are generally safe, the prolonged sitting is bad for us. Prolonged sitting puts pressure on our spine and the tissue surrounding our thigs. After a couple of hours of sitting, our blood flow is redued and our digestion slows down. The reduction in blood flow means that our brain does not get as much oxygen and our heart has to work harder leading to an increased risk to get a heart attack. Also type 2 diabetes, dementia and Alzheimers are associated with prolonged sitting. Even young adults can suffer direct consequences from prolonged sitting as the pooled blood in the legs might lead to thrombosis. Prolonged sitting is also associated with various forms of cancer in men and women.
In order to counterackt the negative effects of prolonged sitting we might try some aerobic exercises. Although they generally help with obesity and blood pressure, scientists have found that sports does not completely compensate for the negative effects of prolonged sitting. This is why there are now alternative options to support a more active lifestyle. Standing desks are a viable option as they can alleviate some but not all side-effects of prolonged sitting. Treadmill desks at work have also shown some benefits. But the easiest solution would be to take a break from time to time, stand up and move.

Sitting leads to cancer, eh? Ironic then that it was cancer that lead to me sitting so much - brain tumour; treatment destroyed my inner ears leading to tinnitus, hearing loss, and severe balance impairment. And hair cells don't grow back, so it's still wrecked nearly 30 years later. Still, that's 30 years I was not going to have otherwise, so... Winning!
Biomedical scientist here and I make videos on youtube as well. Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. I know how much they are time-consuming. So, Thank you for your efforts.
I sit all the time, and I'm not aware how destructive it can be. Thanks for this video, by the way.
Thank you for this! That explains my lower back pain and disc degeneration 😕
Great video! At 87, I'm doing very well health wise, and working on improving. Sit at my desk computer 10 to 12 hours per day, but I started taking breaks every 30 minutes, about a year ago. When my 30 minute timer goes off, I jump up and dry fire my pistol 5 times, walk briskly to the back of the house, then all the way to the front and back to my desk. Takes 90 seconds. Recently, adding 60 seconds on my MOVE POWER PLATE 5 times or so per day. It's set for max vibration. Feels good. Whole thing take 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 minutes per hour. Feels good, and based on this video, appears to be great inssurance.
Im sitting 10-15 hours a day and cant change it. I'd use a standing desk but i cant pay for one with my sallary. Its sad

You could buy a simple tabletop converter, they're much cheaper.

Just do exercises every 30 minutes

How active are you for the rest of the day. 8 hours sitting, 8 hours in = 16 hours. 1.5 hours walking as a % is not very much?
I subconsciously move forward and back like on a swing that moves forward and backward and also keep moving my legs while sitting I think that helps, and sitting straight is the key, and not sitting continuously for more than 2.5 hours
Standing desks also not that costly. So worth considering. Most come in 140x80 CM.
5:47 xD my instinct thought that you were going to start rapping emminems lose your self, also great vid as always, apriciate your content
Lmao the sponsor joke was so good 😂😂 too realistic
if I'm not sitting, I'm laying. I can't walk and haven't stood since I was a child, guess I'm fucked.
what about sitting at school?
I haven't walked in years. 😶
Tru to lay vs sit presumably but also stand and even merely working out a few minutes every so often like once a day or every other day or so.
great video
Sitting only for a few minutes or for at least 1 hour only is not enough to destroy our body right?
This topic was my very first video which I made out of spite from sitting down at work the whole day hahaha
I wonder if tens stimulation to the legs would help
Would fidgeting help, like doing soleus push ups?
*sitting down to watch this video*
First Iwas thinking that its standing for an hour or 2 which may cause back and knees pain ,now I m a bit confused..
Why did you hide one of your previous videos?
Nose bleed, when sitting! With big blood koagers. After covid?
Well i dont like sitting when on my phone so i move around my house But when i am on the PC i stay for over 8 hours and suffer from back pain so i think i will take a break every 2 hours and decrease my time on the PC i am getting bored anyway and my play time is getting less and less
So many happy comments

😊 Happy comment... Hi.
Hey! I'm just curious how much of the advice you give us via research, follow yourself? You must be the healthiest person alive. :D
I have a sit/stand desk that I actively use. I'm standing right now. I also have a rebounder that I use while watching youtube. Some of the time, at least. This late at night I use headphones, which isn't rebounder compatible.

Step one: took the back off my chair did wonders for posture. Step two: fidget. My feet move. My thighs move. My "cheeks" move and bounce me up and down. Maybe I'll buy a desk later but today the lawn needs to be mown.

Backless chairs make my posture worse and I don't understand why they still exist

@@Heyu7her3 maybe it helps that I "made" my stool from an office chair. I can adjust it high enough that my knees are slightly lower than my rump, which tucks the small of my back forward, at least while typing or daydreaming. I'll still slouch while writing or reading.
Pls pls make a video on schizophrenia
Well, was great to be around, goodbye, people.
Wow
Very true. but would i give up my life of sitting? NEVER!
I ride my bike.
That Eminem reference was awesome
I'm sitting watching this... I'll continue sitting lol. Everything destroys our bodies, so pick your poison. 🤷🏾♀️
you should get a sponsor for a good standing desk no shame in it man gotta be unethical to get ahead even though i dont think that taking a sponsor for a desk wouldve been bad at all

The studies are missing something more important, five more important... Their diets and lifestyles How much oil did they consume? Meats? & Fish? Animal fats and oils. Dairy? Eggs? And refined sugar. This would give us a better understanding of what they were consuming. A five deadlier killer than just sitting on your ass.

An all-plant diet can be a killer as well. Obviously, it's about moderation and modification.

@Heyu7her3 haha 😆 funny On what evidence supports this scientific theory of the killer veggies? It's simple to fix, if a food has an adverse effect, what do you do? That's right, don't eat that particular vegetable or food. For non foods like oils, that is straight toxic cancerous poison, that causes Anoxia for at least 12 hours after consumption, damaging and killing cells, there are zero benefits. And any positives will never out way the negatives of oils. Just think how many fruit, seeds or nuts would go into making the average amount of consumed oils, then imagine that being served the same amount oils nuts or seeds on your plate, could you eat it all?

My body rejects a ton of veggies, these days. I had an ulcer about seven years ago. I used to fight wild fire.
Ha ha. This is why I'm dying. I look forward to being dead. People are THE WORST.
...Shit
Then... office men starting getting pregnant. Yes... TRANS
