How Sitting Destroys Your Body

Since the 1950s, the number of office jobs has increased by 83%. At the same time, the number of physically active jobs have decreased from 50% in 1960 to less than 20% now. Although it seems harmless, sitting is harmful for us.

Since the 19th century, the number of office jobs have steadingly increased. Although office jobs are generally safe, the prolonged sitting is bad for us. Prolonged sitting puts pressure on our spine and the tissue surrounding our thigs. After a couple of hours of sitting, our blood flow is redued and our digestion slows down. The reduction in blood flow means that our brain does not get as much oxygen and our heart has to work harder leading to an increased risk to get a heart attack. Also type 2 diabetes, dementia and Alzheimers are associated with prolonged sitting. Even young adults can suffer direct consequences from prolonged sitting as the pooled blood in the legs might lead to thrombosis. Prolonged sitting is also associated with various forms of cancer in men and women.
In order to counterackt the negative effects of prolonged sitting we might try some aerobic exercises. Although they generally help with obesity and blood pressure, scientists have found that sports does not completely compensate for the negative effects of prolonged sitting. This is why there are now alternative options to support a more active lifestyle. Standing desks are a viable option as they can alleviate some but not all side-effects of prolonged sitting. Treadmill desks at work have also shown some benefits. But the easiest solution would be to take a break from time to time, stand up and move.

Sitting leads to cancer, eh? Ironic then that it was cancer that lead to me sitting so much - brain tumour; treatment destroyed my inner ears leading to tinnitus, hearing loss, and severe balance impairment. And hair cells don't grow back, so it's still wrecked nearly 30 years later. Still, that's 30 years I was not going to have otherwise, so... Winning!

Great video! At 87, I'm doing very well health wise, and working on improving. Sit at my desk computer 10 to 12 hours per day, but I started taking breaks every 30 minutes, about a year ago. When my 30 minute timer goes off, I jump up and dry fire my pistol 5 times, walk briskly to the back of the house, then all the way to the front and back to my desk. Takes 90 seconds. Recently, adding 60 seconds on my MOVE POWER PLATE 5 times or so per day. It's set for max vibration. Feels good. Whole thing take 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 minutes per hour. Feels good, and based on this video, appears to be great inssurance.

How active are you for the rest of the day. 8 hours sitting, 8 hours in = 16 hours. 1.5 hours walking as a % is not very much?

I subconsciously move forward and back like on a swing that moves forward and backward and also keep moving my legs while sitting I think that helps, and sitting straight is the key, and not sitting continuously for more than 2.5 hours

The studies are missing something more important, five more important... Their diets and lifestyles How much oil did they consume? Meats? & Fish? Animal fats and oils. Dairy? Eggs? And refined sugar. This would give us a better understanding of what they were consuming. A five deadlier killer than just sitting on your ass.

@Heyu7her3 haha 😆 funny On what evidence supports this scientific theory of the killer veggies? It's simple to fix, if a food has an adverse effect, what do you do? That's right, don't eat that particular vegetable or food. For non foods like oils, that is straight toxic cancerous poison, that causes Anoxia for at least 12 hours after consumption, damaging and killing cells, there are zero benefits. And any positives will never out way the negatives of oils. Just think how many fruit, seeds or nuts would go into making the average amount of consumed oils, then imagine that being served the same amount oils nuts or seeds on your plate, could you eat it all?
