In 2020, roughly 1 billion people were older than 60. in 2030 this number will rise to 1.4 billion. Aging is accompanied by diseases such as heart disease, stroke or dementia. Aging seems inevitable.. or are there ways to slow down aging? Let's see how scientists try to slow down Aging!
Aging research really started in the 20th century. It was observed that the lifespan of animals can be increased up to 50-300% by putting them on certain diets. This effect was demonstrated in yeast cells, flies, worms, mice and even monkeys, although the last is quite controversial. Scientists also genetically modified mice to live longer and slow down aging. When the hallmarks of aging were uncovered we really started to understand how aging works and how we possibly can reverse it.Throughout our lives, cells in our body become more and more damaged and their function is compromised. After a while, cells reach senescence meaning that they cannot make new cells anymore and lose their function. Senescent cells (or zombie cells) are a hallmark of aging and they promote inflammation which damages the overall tissue. One way to slow down aging would be to get rid off zombie cells.
Scientists have tried to remove zombie cells (or senescent cells) in mice. By using mouse models, they showed that removing senescent cells increase the lifespan of animals. At the same time, senolytics were developed. Senolytics are loosely defined as substances which destroy zombie cells. Senolytics have been used to increase the lifespan of mice and reduce age-related symptoms. In humans, senolytics have been used in a clinical trial to improve the symptoms of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Besides removing zombie cells, we could also slow down aging by converting them back into normal cells. We could do that by using transcription factors in order to switch on youthful genes. Based on this, scientists have restored the vision in old mice and made human cells 30 years younger in the petri dish (based on the activity of their genes).
But we can also slow down aging by our lifestyle choices. Both intermittent fasting and caloric restriction show promising effects on longevity. Both intermittent fasting and caloric restriction seem to promote autophagy (controlled self destruction) of zombie cells, thereby possibly slowing down aging. Let's see where this goes!

Yes, I’d like a series on aging. I’m 47 and so far still feel like 25. I stopped sugary drinks at age 22, have exercised since age 15, and have gradually increased the healthiness of my diet over the years. I’ve done occasional intermittent fasting, I don’t enjoy it so it’s not often. I prioritize quality sleep (started monitoring it years ago and made charts to figure out what works best for me to get the most deep sleep). I mix up the exercise: yoga, weightlifting, HIIT, trail running, aggressive hiking & fun activities like aerial classes, the rock climbing gym, ninja gyms, horseback riding, skiing, etc. Keeps it fun!

I am not interested in growing old and suffering, but in being as healthy as possible at any age. Cold shower, interval fasting, healthy diet, yoga, meditation, all kinds of sports, reading the book Lifespan, improving the way I deal with stress exposure, be happier, do not celebrate short-term goals, but enjoy the journey of life at all times. This may be incredibly difficult at first, but over the years (with many setbacks) you can improve your lifestyle to an incredible degree. This is my personal long-term scientific experiment :)

I am a researcher and try to work >60h per week (no vacation or weekend for now). I had a tough past with studying and pure survival. This inevitably led me to this lifestyle. For the first time in my life I have the feeling of freedom and health. For now I will not sacrifice that feeling so easily for a family. When you have a family, a house and a mortgage, you either have to sacrifice your job or your sports and health ambitions. I don't want to do that. I am deeply impressed by people (like my parents or you?) who make such sacrifices for a new little life. But it's your choice. However, I would encourage you not to forget yourself and to treat yourself well.

I turned 50 yesterday and nobody would say I looked older than 30. People always ask my secret. For me, it’s in the genes themselves, because I don’t do anything to look younger, but everyone on my dad’s side aged slowly. I did a dna test that showed we typically live to around 90-100 and that’s very much true. I spent my summers with my great great grandmother who died at 98 of a heart stroke chopping wood. Appalachian life! 😉

I like this topic of age reversal. I'm 72, & I found that I no longer crave heavy meats & supersized portions. Temperance & fasting have helped me lose weight. Exercising is a bit dicey, however, bc the resulting pain sometimes has the opposite effect it used to have when I was young & stupid. Once again, temperance is the key-- & a good primary physician. Stay away from the junk food, poisoned foods, & gmo's, & we might be able to add a few to several years to our lives. At least we won't go piecemeal, hopefully. Amen.

Genetics is number one! Then proper diet, exercise, decrease stress, restful sleep, doing things that make YOU happy and optimizing hormones so you can feel happy and full of joy! All these things play a huge role in aging and overall good health! Also, if you want to mimic caloric restriction without fasting or intermittent fasting, then take berberine on a daily basis. There are many peptides that work well too. BPC-157 and MOTs-C to name a couple. In my 28 years in healthcare I'd have to say that people tend to overindulge on everything and this is what also leads to disease. You don't have to restrict everything. The key is moderation! Stop eating like there is no tomorrow! A lot to this, but these are the basics....

Nice summary. I am 78 and very healthy - 0 medical issues. I walk 5-10 miles at least 4 days every week, do some weight and body weight exercise, and eat nearly no sugar or processed food. I live in Mexico so the normal diet is rich in whole grains (corn tortilla from whole grain) and abundant locally produced vegetables and fruits. I have also been taking NMN for about 6 years. It is appalling that nearly the whole budget of the National Institutes of Ageing has been devoted to Alzheimer's - with no significant therapies while aging it self is not researched since it is not a disease! It just leads to all the diseases of aging! Even the TAME study has had problems getting funded. If the only support of ageing research are billionaires, the results may not be affordable to normal people. I have written to my Senators and Representative to push them to consider the issue of ageing as a preventative to increase health span.

We were talking about this in one of my biology classes last semester. Reducing calories is an oversimplification. It's not quantity of calories that matter, it's the number of blood sugar spikes over the lifespan of the organism. We essentially have a limited number of times that we can use insulin to lower our blood sugar levels. In other words, grazing throughout the day and eating lots of sugary foods will age you faster. Reducing the number of times you eat in a day and reducing sugar intake, will make you live longer.

My photo was taken about three years ago. Im 74 now and still look very much the same. Ive been drinking about 20 OZ. of red wine each night for approx. 16+years. Recently Ive cut back about 50%. My diet is average meat, potatos, fish poltry and pork, with fresh or fresh frozen vegetable servings at dinner. I stay away from all deli meats and pre-packaged foods as much as possible. I read labels because Im very allergic to preservatives and MSG.( terrible headaches ).I get compliments very often. Ive recently, also began eating grassfed beef or buffalo. Ive heard rumors that the FDA is trying to force all grassfed beef farmers to add something thats not good they put in the grainfed beef. I forget what it was.I also get frozen chicken with NO PRESERVATIVES or chemicals.. Now I guess the FDA has granted permission for food processors to use the words NATURAL FLAVORS , instead of MSG. So beware.I also eat lots of onions ,broccoli, and asparagus. I just started using MUNG FRUIT sugar substitute for dowsing it on my oatmeal and shredded wheat. ( NO GLUCOSE).I still lift a few weights and vigorussly walk uphill about 350 paces when Im in the mood.I guess staying height-weight proportionate isnt a diet. Its a lifestyle.

I mix keto-vore diet with OMAD (one meal a day) IF - and also weave in various long-term fasting routines (I recently water-only fasted for 30 days - it takes awhile to work up to this!). I'd also like to suggest that you look into Rapamycin. It's showing some very promising results in extending lifespan, resetting the "set point" in the body for weight and even killing off cancers.

A zombie cell is basically a dysfunctional cell and death occurs when we achieve a population of zombie cells that lead to a critical failure in the organism that stops the organism from functioning. So my question is how does a cell go from healthy to zombie cell what is happening in the cell that causes cellular death?

Yes I am currently in and have been doing so for quite some time this Corrick restriction and intermittent fasting. But during the fasting period I will consume large amounts of water and lots of fruit or vegetables in between. Because they do not take any energy out of the body to digest hence the body is still in its fasting state. I also read a book called fit for life or 10 steps to energy which is talking about hygienic eating what are you do not combine certain foods together because the body cannot digest it due today Amazons in stomach. And I have had good results from that I am currently 52 years old and I have been told I look 30. Unfortunately it’s not as young as I would like to be but it helps. I am also currently I doing calisthenics weight training elastic workout parkour kickboxing and a number of other activities changing through the week so I don’t get bored with it and keeps the momentum flowing. That way you don’t get bored with what you were doing. I also avoid starchy foods flour rice potatoes and am eating in the keto plan. I also do it for your type Where there are certain foods that medicine for your blood. There are a number of things that I do and I find good results. I still don’t have grey hair and my skin is still in reasonably good condition.

Teresa Hsu Chih, was a Chinese-born Singaporean charity worker, known affectionately as "Singapore's Mother Teresa", lived till 113 years old. She often only ate once a day, and only simple food like egg, yogurt, piece of fruit, raw vegetables... because she said she was too busy to cook and wash up. Her precious time were better spent doing work for charitable causes. Her limited caloric diet might contributed to her longevity in order to serve her beloved charities.

I wonder if visualization (how we constantly view ourselves) plays a role in aging. Another, possibly minor contribution in the process of slowing down aging, might be *how* we eat and drink. I wonder if eating and drinking slower plays a role too. 🤔

I have been doing IF (intermittent fasting) for about 25 years. I'm currently 67. I'm in great health, both mentally and physically. Diet: Sardines, Salmon, Tuna, Flounder, Chicken. Seeds (Chia, Hemp, Flaxseed). Beans. Oatmeal. Almond Milk, almond butter. Dark Chocolate (80% Cocoa). Dark coffee. Nuts (Cashews, Walnuts), Fruits (Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspeberries, Oranges). Vegetables (Kale, Peppers, Celery, Carrots, Onions). Various vitamins, e.g. D3, Omega 3, CoQ10, Magnesium, Zinc, Lutein, B12. Exercise: This is something I need to do more off. For now, just walk everyday. Medication specifically taken as per current longevity research: Metformin (even though I do not have Diabetes), Fisetin (anti senescence). Apigenin (raises NAD levels), For the fasting, I cycle through OMAD (one meal a day), 36-hour water only fasts (done 3 times during a 1 week period in a month), 3-day water fast done once every 3 months. May you live long enough to live forever!.

This makes me think of the theory I began to have about carrying extra weight on the body especially for years on end. That tissue is stagnant, holding toxins, and not replacing itself. A mass of fat on the body isn’t getting fresh blood to it at all. It’s inert and basically in suspended animation. One could almost compare it to a small town far from the highway. It doesn’t change it’s just there and collects more junk and doesn’t progress. It can really only collect more toxins that are slowly seeping through the body from what we consume whether it be food or substance. The longer it’s there the worse it gets. A residual effect. This is why I believe the leaner and more active a person is the more regeneration and replenishing is going on. Everything is closer to the vascular system.

I just turned 40 this year and my new friends (we moved to another state a few years ago) who are mostly younger than I am didn’t believe me that I was going to be 40 and am older than they are. Lol. My oldest son is 19, sometimes we get confused as siblings and sometimes even a couple (bleh-we both cringe at those comments) cuz he’s 6’4” and can grow a full beard and I’m 5’9” I mean of course we pair well, he’s my kid! Lol. Anyway, my father says it comes from my mother’s side. We’re Italian, according to him… greaseballs. Lol. I don’t do much for skin care except use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. Sometimes I’ll use my homemade exfoliating mix (baking soda, olive oil, honey). I believe it’s all in the genes.
