How Social Media Addiction Destroys Your Brain

The rise of social media has changed our day to day lives. But more and more reports show that social media and especially social media can impact our brain. Social media addiction might also to a decline in mental health. How does social media changes us? And are the effects by social media addiction reversal?

Social media has been developed to connect people. However, quite early, scientists found that social media (and social media addiction) can lead to changes in the brain such an enlarged amygdala. First reports surfaced showing that people compare their lives to lives they see on social media and report a decline of mental health upon heavy social media use. It seems like our brains cannot distinguish between social media and the real world. Social media also led to an attention span crisis meaning that we have a harder time to focus if we spend much time on social media. Moreover, social media is able to feed into the reward system of our brains. Everytime we perceive something good dopamine producing cells in the brain release dopamine which leads to a good feeling. Social media has used this mechanism to provide us with a constant stream of good feelings. Social media algorithms have been optimize to show more social media content in a shorter period of time leading to more dopamine. As a result, some argue that social media addiction should be recognized as a mental disorder.
Besides negatively impacting our brains on an individual level social media and social media addiction also impacts society. Last year, a sharp rise in tic symptoms have been reported among teenagers in the US. It seems like that tic-related content on tiktok together with anxiety caused by the COVID-19 pandemic led to this rise in tic-like symptoms. So what should we do about social media? And how can we ensure that our brains are not negatively impacted by the constant stream of dopamine? Well, sometimes the best thing is just to avoid social media for a while.

There’s something not right with social media. It drains me. And if you’re not on it, you feel like you’re missing out. This can’t be good for the brain. It’s like these companies are playing around with our deepest needs as a human. Nothing beats face to face human contact, nothing.

If you can deleting all social media (including KZread) from your phone, and making your phone as boring as possible is key. If you have to access KZread, only access it on a separate computer. I separate apps with an iPad and keep my iPhone as boring as possible, but if you can stick with just have a boring phone with no social media, and a computer for everything else (work, school, youtube), that would be best.

I feel like a total addict. Social media, especially TikTok, takes up so much of my time and energy. I've lost so many days and nights to endless scrolling. I know it sounds dramatic, but I don't have control anymore. I've tried so many timers, focus modes, harm reduction, replacements, breaks etc, but it always comes back worse. At my worst I was spending an average of 4-5 hours a day on TikTok and yes I work full time and go to college classes. Today I uninstalled all my social media apps except KZread. I come here to learn and don't usually end up doom scrolling, but if it happens here too I'll delete KZread as well. My attention span, memory, anxiety, depression, energy levels, motivation, and cognitive function are so bad right now. The least I can do is take a big break from something that I know I can't handle. It's kind of like how some people can have two drinks and go home and other people can't stop. If I open TikTok, there's a good chance my day is over. It's humiliating, but it's time to be honest with myself that my ADHD is too severe for me to trust myself with a dopamine machine like that. Please be kind if you respond to this comment. I'm being more vulnerable than I typically do on the internet so that if anyone else is struggling similarly, they don't feel so alone.

I also have adhd and was diagnosed since childhood. Growing up I found myself usually struggling with priorities and school/homework and instead getting lost in games or books or anime.. but growing up and being introduced to social media .. I have noticed my addiction and days getting worse and worse through the years. It’s just as you described. My whole day is over as well as alot of those activities I used to enjoy I can’t do them anymore I can’t control it. Its hard to explain. Even KZread is starting to get addictive in a very bad way. I don’t think my mind can handle algorithms and short form content and any kind of social media. And every time I stop I end up coming back and it’s even worse and harder to handle and stop. I hate it. I hate knowing this is intentional too.

I think social media does far more bad than good atm. Non-verbal communication as in simply texting makes you emotionally disconnected. I think online debates tend to be so abusive because we are unable to emotionally connect with the person on the other side. Debating or talking in real life is far more complex because there are so many "layers" to it. From an emotional perspective, to the fact that you simply cannot avoid the consequences etc. The creep for validation is also very concerning. Social media validation runs into two very unhealthy extremes. Either you feel so unwelcome, unappreciated and disliked that it causes and increases feelings of depression or on the other side you get so much attention that you feel like you are above others increasing narcissistic and egocentric tendencies. Overall it took a huge toll on peoples self perception with increased interest in plastic surgical interventions which I find concerning on many levels. Especially considering that the human body is not a commodity you buy to please anyone but the very thing you are and a very complex system that easily gets damaged by such vain and possibly dangerous interventions.

I think we also need to address that so many people who already have mental health issues are so attracted to social media. It's not only social media that causes the issues but often that the issues are there and social media feeds them... just like narcotics. I've never been good on social media and left fb on Feb 14 2010 and i haven't looked back. Oddly enough it was the director of the fb movie who helped me make my decision. He did an interview on "the daily show" where he said that people need to remember that social media is to socializing what reality tv is to reality. I'm kind of a loner type of person (introvert) and get stressed out by socializing for real, like irl. Social media helps me then feel connected without the burnout of actual socializing, and with that, I got kinda addicted. I deliberately avoid making actual friends online because it does not feel real, but it's a great way for me to just talk to people without any obligation. But problem is I ended up spending far more time online than offline, neglecting my actual life, and this makes my life ironically feel more empty and pointless now than ever. So yeah, definitely a vicious cycle I'm trying to break.

I used to use twitter a lot. When I first started, I was quite happy, willing to talk to people on there but after about 6 months my mood started to get bad. There is a lot of bullying that goes on on that site, and I had a similar feeling of being connected to people and it started out like a community of friends, but there were some who liked to make folks feel bad and not really a part of the community. I ended up feeling that I couldn't post anything without it offending someone and there were some folks who wanted me to be a carbon copy of them on everything. If I deviated just a little - bam! That was a reason for bullying and cutting me out. I now can't use websites where there is a lot of rapid fire, short messaging because of it.

I started using social media in middle school and continued through college. It honestly didn't contribute anything positive to my life. I was more attentive to my online presence than my physical one and I lost touch with things I genuinely enjoyed in my life. After college I deleted all my social media and decided to focus on maintaining a few meaningful relationships and avoided all the frivolous ones social media brought around. I feel happier and more present in my daily life and the fewer friendships I do maintain are far more meaningful and fulfilling. I still use my smart phone for the majority of my daily life but it isn't the centerpiece of my life anymore, it is just a tool to enhance the life I am already living. I highly recommend people get off social media as much as possible.

And they had the tics for about 6 months and then it miraculously went away and they haven’t mentioned it in like 2 years. They are both chronically online and think they have every disorder under the sun that gets views on Tik Tok. It’s really disturbing watching the youth have this behavior because it’s not cute or fun to have a disorder. Anybody who actually lives with one knows that and wishes they could be normal, and to have children cosplaying with their disorder is so disrespectful.

these days I mostly use youtube, and probably the most negative thing is that I live vicariously through experiences of others, which also has some positive sides of learning. You can watch a guy on the other side of the planet building a house, you may learn some things, but the negative thing is that you become to associate his accomplishments as your own, in terms of dopamine perhaps. It's like a drug. It's damaging to my personal life, because I'm constantly in this mode of "absorbing information" as if I'm preparing for life, but nothing happens on my side. I ain't building no house, I have just become a passive observer of how others live their life. On the other hand I'm not unhappy to see others have a happy life, quite the contrary I'm happy for them. Also I don't depend on likes and attention like you mentioned some people in the influencer sphere do. I generally don't like to draw much attention, but would like to start living my own life, but feels like I'm stuck in some kind of limbo of my own making.

I’m 21 and social media has always been something that I have had problems with. It’s nice when you want to share with friends how you’re doing but at the same time I would just spend countless hours scrolling through TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, etc. A month ago I deleted TikTok off my phone after realizing that I would only be on there and would spend upwards to 4-5 hours on the platform. I ended up replacing that time with reading and watching movies which I felt good about. I haven’t felt the urge to download TikTok again (one time I did uninstall TikTok and reinstall it a couple days later) which feels like a mini victory. A couple days ago I realized that I ended up spending more of my time scrolling through Instagram and Twitter which caused me to get kind of sad about myself and ended up deleting everything except Messenger, Snapchat, and KZread. I wish I could bring myself to delete all of them but both Snapchat and Messenger have people on there that I don’t want to just randomly leave and KZread has a lot of content that I enjoy watching for like an hour or two each day. Overall I feel a little better about myself and have been learning to use my time more wisely and try to become better at my mental health as well as other things.

There will always be at least one person in the crowd who is shaking his/her leg/legs/hands, moving their jaw, leaning back and forth, completely shaking, or making other jerky monotone movements...mostly I see this in young adults, teenagers and children. Has the number of people with "Tourette syndrome" really increased that much since the 2020s or have there always been this high number of people with tremors?

I cut down on socials after pandemic just because of the reasons explained in the video during the first 3 minutes..I had and I have low self esteem but more precisely I couldn't bear to be looked down on and to comparing myself to other people on Instagram in particular..I got off Instagram in June 2020 namely after a ghosting..and that was the worst..I still can't find a reason to open the account anew even though I feel really cut off...

The brief comment about the brain regions for thumb and finger control increasing caught my attention. Why is that a problem? I am an artist (painting and drawing) and was trained in art from a very young age, as is the norm in my family. Would not frequent drawing and painting do the same thing? I would engage in those activities and get so into them I would keep going for hours (even when I was a teenager, although sometimes I would play Tetris or Super Mario for a long time on my old Nintendo too).

It's sad for everyone but for me I find that every time I try to deal with people on the outside world it never works out unfortunately I've had a lot of bad Experience with people in the real world so for my safety I keep to myself and watch hours of social media unfortunately unfortunately I want to break free from this once & for all but it's hard when people have drove me to become a loner...I mean you can't even sit in a park minding your own business without some evil toxic person trying to cause you trouble.

TikTok is very dangerous. It is like your brain is a lump of clay, and you are allowing one stranger after another to come in and sculpt on it for 90 seconds at a time. You don't remember the vast majority of the videos you see, but the effect of absorbing all of that information remains inside you. And how many hours are you letting people do this to you? And how many years have you let it go on? How many videos do you think you've seen over that time, and how many do you actually remember? These are very unsettling questions. But someone who is really addicted to TikTok has already gotten bored and gone back to it for more. I'm so glad I never got into that. It's not worth it.

i dont have any social media besides youtube. And youtube is the only social media that, if used correctly, can make you smarter everyday. My recommendation is to avoid "shorts" videos, they're mostly useless and highly addictive. Use it for science and culture only, avoid those futile influencer videos, or toxic topics. On the other hand, facebook, tiktok and instagram have nothing useful to offer.

I'm older and MySpace was not for music in the beginning. It was almost identical to Facebook and it was after we all migrated to FB that MyS had to pivot and slowly (pathetically at first) tried to become a music-connecting space. But two big differences in the beginning days was that you could choose a "background song" for your MySpace profile and you could go into the coding and mess with background colors, designs and stuff. It was pretty fun at first! But FB came in and was very plain and uniform. People who weren't nerdy and into coding and stuff could just fill in the blanks and it was much easier to use. I don't know why it happened and it would be interesting to dig into this history, but it seems like within days suddenly MySpace was crickets and you had to go to FB. I was already on both so it wasn't that hard but really weird how MySpace was a graveyard and took forever before it looked like it does now.

We see more images in one day than a person in the Middle Ages in his whole life. That is tiring. Scrolling on the phone we have to make decisions all the time. We choose when and where to click to. This is exhausting the brain. And our attention span has become much shorter. Reading a book has become more difficult for most people.

to keep it short, social media has rather had a positive impact in my case. Lots of good, educative information out there & abilty to meet interesting people all around the world. (just have to avoid the not-so-obvious time pit traps that have near to 0 actual "worth-your-time" content and spend time with your close ones in REAL LIFE as well) pphew, couldn't really word it out that short/well but hopefully you get the point, social media CAN be really useful as long as you know how to use it😅 And as always, thank you Clemens for your videos😃

Thing is, you don't nessecarily need social media to get what positives you've described maybe except meeting with new people. Educative information can be found without any digital media granted it may be limiting. However internet is not considered as a social media itself. You can reach boundless recources of education without tapping on social media-hell social media doesn't really contain any educative information anyway. We need to distinguish the difference between internet as a whole and social media such as instagram and stuff. Also social media did made it easier to connect with new people in its early years however, right now we are in a situation where traditional meeting methods such as meeting a friend's friend face-to-face, gov. funded public clubs about hobbies(appearantly there were some kind of events like these lol) are in low amount. Right now, the only proper way you're going to let alone meet new people-to even socialize with you existing friends is via social media. It kinda destroyed traditional ways of meeting with new people, essentially caging us for its use for general socialization-especially romantically. Like, it's getting harder and harder to meet with new girls face-to-face and connect with them cause they're either working, studying or hanging out with people on social media. Am a bit salty ngl. Social media is like cigarettes actually. They cause you artificial dopamine rushes with each nicotine hit is each like. Each puff is each person 'sliding' in your dms lol. We need to get rid of it eventually.

What we would need to do is to break up the internet monopoly from the few big corporate entities (facebook/meta, twitter/x, Google, Apple, Amazon) and to create legislation to ban predatory social media algorithms that have the sole purpose of being as addictive as possible. Lazy content farm-like short form videos being latest example. We're coming towards a philosophical conundrum in evolution. Should humanity fully embrace going full technology and start heading towards being basically augmented androids one day -- or should we keep natural boundaries, and ban fucking around with genetics/dna/AI and keep touch with how things have been for the past 100k years. I dont have the answers to that, but we will face that decision one day. And i dont want some faceless lobbyists behind closed doors making that decision for me. I'm glad more people are waking up to how absolutely destructive social media can be. It can, it will again, and it already has been weaponized too. That's why you've seen so many countries fully closing off their internet to the outside recently, and even imprisoning people who use VPNs.

FIRST OFF, consider WHY those "old friends you lost touch with" lost touch with you. Isn't there something else going on here, like showing off or proving yourself, hunting up a mate from old flames or crushes, and so on? THEN CONSDIER THAT NONE OF THESE THINGS ARE HEALTHY OR BENEFICIAL SPIRITUALLY OR EMOTIONALLY TO YOU, let alone the endless scroll of just information data memories and random FOMO youre better off searching up on your own
