How NOT to paint your Jeep JL Dash.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is just as described. Watch my trials and tribulations as I try to paint my Jeep JL dash inserts and I learn some important lessons to pass onto the viewers. The project, while not complex or difficult, does require some knowledge, and I will try to impart that on to the viewers so they don't also make the same errors.

    Thanks for the heads up on the paint. I'm presently waiting for the mopar paint (punk'n) to come in. But, I did buy a pair of dash panels to paint punk'n with black rings. So, I have time to work on it. Plan to just paint the chrome rings black.

  • @myblujl7503

    Glad I could help. I think the mopar paint will work, but be careful with the primer. I used some off-the-shelf primer, and the mopar paint ate it even after 24 hours of cure. I had door sill guards painted in truck bed liner that cured for 5 days and the mopar paint ATE THROUGH THAT. This stuff is really nasty and strong.

    Ok so I used the Mopar primer filler and the Mopar color match paint. I used 400 grit sand paper over the entire panels (including the black gauge area). Yes I wanted that area Punk'n also and the chrome rings gloss black. Washed with water and wiped dry Used denatured alcohol and let set a couple of days ( because the primer was back ordered) Put three coats of primer on both panels with 7-10 minutes between coats. Waited 15 minutes and put a coat of Punk'n paint. Followed by two more coats 10 minutes apart. Waited 15 minutes and put a coat of Rust-Oleum 2x gloss clear coat. Followed by a second coat 10 minutes later. (It was a used can and all I had, plus wife reminded me of grad party). Wish I had more for a third coat. Returned from party three hours later. Panels looked freaking awesome (close to the factor body paint)......but...... And a big but....... The black plastic around the gauges looked like I used "crackled" paint. Sanded(400 & 800 grit sand paper) the black plastic smooth this morning. Really bad areas were back down the primer or plastic. Washed down, wiped dry and let set few hours in the sun to fully dry. Hit with primer and well dang, crackle paint groves not accepting primer. Two coats and looks like crap again. But only in the bad areas. Others looked ok. Let dry and re-sanded bad areas. Used two coats of Rust-Oleum primer, then a coat of Mopar primer. Followed by three coats of mopar Punk'n....still needs the clear coat... Will keep you updated If I didn't paint the black plastic, I would of installed them today.

    Amazon does sell covers that go on top of the panels and use double sided tape. For like $80, you can cover your leather panels and paint the covers. Trying to take the covers off later on my damage the leather, so heads up on that.

    Looks good but I would recommend shying away from sanding the dash panels before priming them. Raw plastics tend to gas out and will leave tiny holes in the paint.

  • @myblujl7503

    @myblujl7503

    2 жыл бұрын

    It could, but if you tape a large piece of plastic over the airbag, it truly can kill someone. The dash is engineered to tear itself apart without creating shrapnel, but that plastic cover will just be a projectile. I suggest if you dont want to put in the time, try to cover it with vinyl rather than plastic.

    Thank you! I did a bit more decal work I hope to cover in the future. You really cant see the dash decal until the light hits it, then it really pops. This blue color is like that. • @myblujl7503

    No. That battery only handles small electronics like your Jeeps computer. Air Bags have been around for a very long time, and multiple safety features are in place to keep them from going off when not needed. If the car is not on, it wont go off.

    Please stop the madness. That is an airbag component. Please do not instruct people to remove the passenger bezel, and certainly not the airbag. In addition, do not instruct people to sand, paint, or change anything on the surface of that bezel. The airbag is designed to deploy through the bezel. A tremendous amount of testing goes into making that system function properly during a deployment, and any modifications to it can affect that performance.
