iamthatroby - You’ve managed to give a good breakdown of what the film was trying to accomplish and delivered a well thought-out explanation for your love of the film. For me, there were “parts” of the movie that were really good. However by the time Clark Kent puts on the costume, the emotional weight and solid storytelling begins to lose a lot of momentum that did not carry me through the rest of the film. Overall, I think it was a decent film that tried to be something more than the sum of its parts.

I feel man of steel was a good movie but dc shared unvirse ruined when this movie came out alot of people at my highschool like it talk abut and the hate train came with announcement batman vs superman and putting to much in one flim and spoiling the movie in the trailer but what dc should of did was make man of steel 2 first and gave us more of connection with a new superman this a character we see multiple versions of him on screen threw movies cartoons man of steel gave us new version the fact most people don't like new things and are scared of change and Christopher reeves was known as the only live action superman and had a huge fan base with his image hell even superman returns tried to keep the same feel and was scared to give something new this did and warner bros gave rushed unvirse instead of a journey with a new character and without sequel i feel they didn't give this movie a fighting chance show what henry cavil could of gave us i feel we would of gotten a light hearted sequel but we got to many character changes in every dceu movies that all felt different.

I absolutely hated live action portrayals of Superman. Felt they were to cheesy, Superman never really uses his full powers in a fight. All he does is lift heavy objects or use his powers in the most awkward way possible to save the day. But then MoS came out and Superman actually felt like a Superhero. The display of power, the development of his character, the reaction of the people to an alien and the serious tone made MoS an amazing movie. It was everything I expected from a Superhero movie. Not to boring, not a complete comedy, and amazing action. I feel like Henry Cavil’s Superman is better than any other version we’ve had before.

Zack Snyder's Clark Kent: * Saves about ten kids and a bus driver from drowning * Protects bullies from his own wrath (instead crushing fence) * Lets Jonathan Kent be killed by tornado (to protect mankind from possible global devastation his secret becoming public knowledge might cause) * Saves rig workers trapped on rig * Saves rig workers and helicopter crew from collapsing rig * Tries to protect a waitress from harassment by drunk trucker * Protects drunk trucker from his own wrath (instead taking out his frustration on said trucker's truck) * Saves Lois Lane from a robot * Saves Lois from internal bleeding * Chooses to protect mankind by surrendering (and making sure Lois isn't mistreated by the military) and willingly being handed over to General Zod * Saves Lois from plummeting to Earth in a damaged space-pod * Protects Martha from Zod's wrath (in a reckless way that endangers Smallville) * Tells the locals of Smallville to get inside * Saves fighter pilot from Faora * Saves soldier falling out of helicopter (probably the very soldier who just shot him in the face with a minigun) * Saves Colonel Hardy from Faora * Saves Earth's mankind by destroying the World Engine (fully aware he would be weakened in its presence) * Protects Lois, Hardy and Hamilton from Zod firing at plane they're in by ramming himself into scout ship * Chooses to wreck the scout ship (including the Genesis chamber, possibly the last hope for the Kryptonian bloodlines) for the sake of Earth's mankind * Saves Lois from falling to her death * Protects as many as he can from Zod by keeping Zod's focus on himself (Zod having sworn to kill everyone on the planet.) * Saves Earth's mankind (again) by killing Zod (since he can't exactly sit on a fellow Kryptonian until one of them dies of old age) Haters gonna hate but jeez, people.

I don't get the people who praise Superman 1978 for having Jonathan Kent die of a heart attack, because it supposedly teaches Superman that he can't save everyone. It would be a fine lesson if the Superman 1978 movie actually stuck to that message, but by the end of the film, he learns how to reverse time, which means he pretty much can save anyone he wants, undermining the entire message.

Actually Jonathan Kent dies because he is scared of what could happen to his son if he is exposed to the world. The choice that Jonathan makes cements the fact that he is willing to die so that his son lives free of any persecution. The fact that Clark dies 18 months after exposing himself to the world further proves that Jonathan was right in his fears. And without that sacrifice, his son would have lasted even less time on this Earth. Jonathan is a man scared that what makes his son different is going to be exactly why people might try to manipulate, use or assassinate his kid. Which is a far more powerful message to our world than people might think at first. The last shot of Jonathan Kent on Man of Steel also displays that, it is not supposed to be interpreted literally, it's not something that actually happened, rather it's Jonathan Kent looking down on his kid and, while worried about his fate, his expression also shows curiosity and hope that everything goes right for his son, now that he is exposed to the world. The kid wearing the cape is how Jonathan sees his son, still his kid, and he still cares for him deeply. Martha Kent is also on that scene and she is hopeful about all of this, maybe because Clark is also hopeful about it, but Jonathan has a wider view on things, which is why he doesn't smile when his kid wears the cape (aka become Superman). Jonathan Kent in Man of Steel is the best father I have seen on any movie by far, and I recognize that easily because my father was the complete opposite.

Makes sense. The kents lived in fear of the govt showing up at their door. In flashpoint for example superman never became a superhero because of it, and in one of 90's batman limited series, cant recall the name, batman discovers a hidden research facility where they were experimenting on some superbeing's corpse, which we later know it was kal el. The ending of BvS proved pappa kent right, and Im not even talking about him sacrificing himself to save the planet, but the scene where the president of the united states deems superman an expendable asset and nukes him and doomsday in a desperate attempt to get rid of the latter. But hey, its easier to just shout like a raging kid at the screen lol

its almot like the fathers in the movie are better developed characters than the main character. and when the main character isnt developed at all thats not really very hard. we know one thing about johnathan kent, that he is concerned about his son. that still makes him a one dimensional character. they wrote him to be that and nothing else and the pay off is a giant cgi monster some nut job created stabs him in the chest. this isn't superman done wlel. it's ham fisted garbage.

agree completely about Man of Steel. IT is a 4 hour scifi space opera. The film is littered with Hope, it is also about Choice. Each major character makes a Choices which effects their lives completely. With, Superman, he first has to make the choice to be come the Superman. He has to make the choice for Earth, not Krypton. He has to make the choice to stop Zod. Those choices have consequences, which is what BvS is all about. The consequences of our choices. This film is a Game Changer...PERIOD!

  • @CapREX77

For me, Man of Steel gave me a whole new perspective on Superman and is the main reason why I am such a huge fan of the character today. The way Zack Snyder told the story of Kryptons destruction was amazing and something I had never seen before in a super hero film. The way they delved into the abilities of Superman and how he flies, and how the earth and the sun effect his body was just so interesting. And the visuals in this movie were out of this world. The look of how Superman flies and the way he breaks the sound barrier every time he’s soaring through the sky is just exhilarating to watch. Never before have we seen Superman more godlike on screen in a live action film. You really felt like he was on a whole other level of power and it was awesome. I will be forever grateful to Zack Snyder for bringing us this masterpiece of a film. It’s too bad that it’s so under appreciated. It’s almost a crime that something so fantastic can be treated so poorly by the mainstream.

i went into to this film at age 13, not caring about Superman (whether as a character or a superhero) at all. Yet i walked out of the theater caring. And i haven’t been able to get the film out of my head since then. I’ve figured it was several factors that made it strike me so hard 1. the cinematography, 2. the score by Hans Zimmer (one of his best ever in my opinion) and 3. the character of Superman. I haven’t seen it since that first showing 5 years ago but I’m curious to watch it again and see if it still strikes me the same way it did. Because, honesty, I’m a little confused as to why I liked it so much.

Man Of Steel is one of the most important and influential movies of my life. The project was announced at a time where I decided to study cinema after high school and it came out right at the end of my second year in college. Just like you said, this movie skyrocketed my fascination for Superman, Lois Lane, DC Comics and Zack Snyder. But it also made me pay a closer attention to the way blockbuster movies are made and advertised. And to me, it's clear from every single aspect of this movie that making it was a labour of love for the creatives involved. The love and respect for the Superman's mythos is transparent, the craftsmanship and its attention to details are staggering. Nothing feels half-assed or barely thought out, all the money that went into it is present on screen. Zack Snyder & co. did not just want to make a cooler and edgier Superman film. They wanted to give him back his place as the most popular and IMPORTANT superhero out there and push the envelope of what a superhero movie could be in terms of scope and scale and what it could say. I don't think that there's been a superhero film as ambitious, well-crafted and cinematic ever since except maybe for BvS, Wonder Woman, Logan and Black Panther. It's sad to see Man Of Steel being negatively compared to Donner's Superman films and the Marvel ones so often and picked apart because it actually tried to shoot for the stars, present bold ideas and be its own thing. But it also makes this video even more enjoyable and gives me hope that one day, it will get the recognition that it always deserved.

Man of Steel was a great movie, and Henry cavill played Superman perfectly, not every film has to be like a marvel film, with humour and laughs. DC is a darker universe, and all marvel fans need to realise and accept that, otherwise all well continue to get are this Shazam travesty, where childish humour has ruined it. I also liked Superman v Batman, and Justice League, though Justice League not as much, But Wonder Woman was brilliant; so Marvel fans out there just get used to that darker universe with its darker colours, and enjoy them for what they are.

"This is a movie that single-handedly inspired my appreciation for Superman" This is EXACTLY what happened to me with this movie. Growing up I knew Superman was like the ultimate superhero, but for me he was boring (he could do anything, never was wrong and had no weakness). But this film put him on a human level: a guy growing up insecure, kinda lonely but the movie has a message of "you can be amazing" that I loved. Extremely underrated movie mainly because it doesn't have comedy. Althou there are two aesthetics choices I didn't like AT ALL: the grainy filter and the incredible desaturation. I never heard a single person defend those choices

Agree 100% I'd been enjoying Marvel films up until this point. They weren't setting my world on fire, but they were fun. Sort of remeniscent of the comics I'd been reading since 1978. Sort of. But something was (and still is) amiss. Then I saw MOS. I didn't see it straight away though. I was bored of Superman on any size of screen. The Reeves films were of their time. TV stuff was lacking. Superman Returns was mediocre. So I skipped MOS at imax. Saw it one day when at a loss. Walked out of the cinema completely buzzing, thinking that, finally, a cbm had been made that wasn't just a good comics movie... It was a good movie full stop. It made me feel a whole spectrum of emotions, captured the mood and grandeur of the comics perfectly... And made me fall in love with the character I'd been reading since the 80s all over again. Still the best cbm, by a huge margin.

And Thank you iamthatroby, glad to see I'm not alone about how "Man of Steel" is a Superhero, Comic Film Masterpiece because it Undisputedly is. And you nailed it about the criticisms, all the criticisms and hate "Man of Steel" gets are so absurd it's "laughable". But the main reason why the people that criticized and hated the film is because the film (You said it) was too "Authentic", Too serious, too Modern Contemporary, too believable, for them. And sadly most Superhero fan audiences are Not fans of "Realism" in Superhero movies. And as a fellow filmmaker, writer, Artist, myself, that makes very little to no sense at all.

This Superman is everything we thrived to be as children, honest, kind, brave, romantic, loyal, fair, selfless and yet, flawed, but self aware... but then, we grow up and begin to experience the world for what it really is, and that light and hope fades. One day, like any other day, we wake up, and there’s only darkness, pain... anger, the world left a scar in our hearts that will never heal... and in the end we look in the mirror and we’ve unwillingly became The Batman. Best superhero movie ever. I’ve watched it countless times. Thank you Zack 🤘P.S. To many, Superman’s superhumanity makes him unrelatable. To many, Superman is as alien to us as a Kryptonian would be to Earth in real life. But when I see Superman, I see his humanity. I see his kind-heartedness. I see his willingness to do everything he can, for the world that called him their own. How many people, if given absolute power, would be overruled by ego, and corrupted absolutely? How many men would willingly lay down their lives, fighting to the bone, for a mob as weak and as fickle to you as a mob of ants? Superman does all that he can for this world, because this world is all that he's got. The fact that a lot of comic book readers have chosen to ignore and shun Superman for his overwhelming heroism is indicative of the characters in Superman's life who choose to mock or ridicule him simply because they've grown bored of his kindness. Iron Man may be cooler, and Batman may be darker, but Superman is, and always will be, super.

The sequence in Krypton shows that this movie has a lot going for it. - I think Jonathan Kent getting a heart attack is more impactful because it shows Superman is not capable of saving everyone or stopping the inevitable. - You did make a great point as to why Jonathan dying from a tornado help elevates the story. - I kinda want to give this movie another go, but the cinematography and color grading are so irritating, that I'd rather not. I think people were expecting something campy and colourful, because it’s Superman. Basically, they wanted to go back to the 70s and revisit Donner’s version. Expectations were not met, so they hated it. All of the destruction caused by Zod, they blamed Superman for. Why they took issue with him killing Zod, I’ll never understand. He killed Zod in Superman 2, but I guess people forgot about that, or the fact that he killed Doomsday in the comic books. Superman would never willingly endanger lives in a fight. Yeah, I’ve heard that argument. But what was he supposed to do? I have yet to hear a valid, logical solution to that question. In The Avengers, New York and Sokovia get trashed, and hundreds if not thousands of people died in the process. Why does no one take issue with that? Because they saved the world? So did Superman. Yet people still crap all over Superman and not The Avengers. Double standards. Hypocrisy. Bias.

So glad you made this video man, I have been defending this movie for years! It truly is a film filled with the ideals of hope and choosing to do the right and noble thing even though the alternative is far easier. Great lessons for life and with the added bonus of dynamic and exciting action sequences (I remember feeling like I was on a rollercoaster watching them in IMAX), it is my favorite superhero film.

I'm not going to be one of those guys who belittles your opinion but I just wanted to touch upon a point you made that I wholeheartedly disagree with. I think you miss the point of why Pa Kent dying of a heart attack DOES serve an important purpose. It's something that even superman can't save him from. As it is in the Man of Steel is that he was FORCED to make that CHOICE. That scene really solidifies what's off in DCEU superman for me. Being superman is a burden that's thrust upon him. Even though I disagree with your take...good video.

Sure, but that’s not what the movie is trying to say. The film has more to say about choice and hope than whether or not Superman can save everyone. In my opinion, it’s hard to criticise a film for not doing something, when it clearly has no interest in actually doing it,

iamthatroby I don't see where you see Hope in this superman other than the fact that his symbol means hope. I would love to discuss this at length but honestly I wouldn't know where the line would cross into troll territory on the comment thread so I'll leave it at that...lol I can understand someone liking this superman but I don't and that's probably not going to change.

Nah, I can pretty much you’ll guarantee that you’ll love this Superman once they do a proper sequel and do it the way Cavill has wanted to do Superman.

If you can't see where we see hope in this Superman then you're missing a lot of what the movie is telling you. Also, Pa Kent dying from a heart attack taught Reeve's Superman that he can't save everyone... a lesson that he disregards at the end of the movie by turning back time itself to save Lois.
