    Cue the nitpicking, the baseless rhetorical criticisms, and the dogmatic comic book purists. Man of Steel was fucking amazing. No it wasn't a traditional retelling of the Superman but so fucking what? It's okay to be different. Basically what this film, the Nolan Batman trilogy, and what it seems like the rest of the DC Cinematic Universe is doing is transplanting these comic book characters into OUR world. And our world is dark. Our world is full of destruction and violence. And the arrival of these kinds of superhuman characters would definitely have a huge impact and it seems like the point of the next movie will be is to explore what exactly that impact is: is it mostly good or mostly bad? One thing we do know for certain though is it is not entirely one or the other. So I'm going to address a few specific points: "BUT THE DESTRUCTION!" So you're saying that a fight between two people with nearly limitless powers would not have a great degree of collateral damage? Did you expect an invasion of Kryptonians do be completely clean and bloodless? Get the fuck out of here. "BUT THE JESUS IMAGERY" Is kept to a minimum when you compare it to Superman Returns. But the Jesus-imagery and the deification of Supers is present in almost every version. "BUT HE KILLED ZOD" Yeah. He should have. Zod would never be beaten into submission and he could never be contained. He had to be taken out of the equation or else the destruction would have continued. "BUT THE CINEMATOGRAPHY AND EDITING" There are quirks, sure. But point me to a film without flaws. "BUT PLOT HOLES" Yeah there are a few, but nothing that ruins the overall integrity of the narrative. And again, point me to a film without flaws.

    +Harry The Cat Now I wouldn't go as far to say that myself. I love Man of Steel to death but honestly I think that the original Iron Man, the first Keaton Batman, X2, The Avengers, and The Dark Knight would rank higher.

    +TheIndieReviewer imo the Avengers was lame af. I seriously hated every X-men movie besides First Class. Iron Man 1, Watchmen, Batman 1&2, TDKR and Man of Steel are imo the beat CBM with MOS on top.

  • @garrycotton7094

    @garrycotton7094

    8 жыл бұрын

    +TheIndieReviewer I don't mind that it's different, in fact I like it. I also don't care if this Superman isn't the same "ultimate paragon" character from the comics. Honestly, the traditional comic version of Superman is often more like a plot device than an actual character, since flaws and rough edges are an integral part of a character. My issues with the movie are purely from a cinema point of view. The movie's biggest problem is pacing: it's *really* off and as such the movie lacks cohesion. So much "development"; at the beginning without any breaks for action can easily lead to getting bored; so much action at the end without breaks can easily lead to getting fatigued. I'll admit I experienced both. If you take the movie as a collection of scenes then the highs are really high but as a complete movie it lacks fluidity. It is also rather humourless, which shouldn't be mistaken for criticizing the dark tone since you can easily have both (in fact humour becomes arguably even more important when the tone is dark). No matter the troubles Clark might've had in his life there would've been humour, we just never see it. We've already seen more humour or at least joy in BvS than the entirety of Man of Steel and it's not even been released yet (the bathtub scene with him and Lois).

    Henry Cavil and Ben Affleck looked, sounded, talked and acted perfectly as Superman and Batman. If they weren't written as killers and the stories around them were less bombastic and more grounded, they'd probably be the most accurate portrayals of the characters across all platforms but Zach Snyder just loves making everything dower, depressing and over the top. Even if the story/character doesn't call for that tone. It kinda works better for Batman because he's a dark, dower character (not a killer though) .. but it doesn't work for Supe's at all. Clark Kent shouldn't be an angry, depressed, moping cynical edge lord and he certainly shouldn't kill. Regardless of all my complaints, I'll definitely miss Cavil as Superman.

    Watchmen is, but Zack seems to think every comicbook movie should be depressing, deep and grounded in reality. That worked for watchmen since the themes of the story are just that. But Zack Snyder basically ruined DC movies forever with that depressing shit. Also his visual style was very good at the beginning of his carreer, now its just dark and ugly.

    @@martyvenkman860 True. i haven't read enough comics except for some outstanding batman graphic novels, but i'm judging the movie not the comic. If the comic is just as bad as this load of trash, then i guess i wont need to read it, but i immediately believe it when you say the comic is great.. BVS was also heavily inspired by the dark knight returns, but that book is a masterpiece and still the movie is utter trash. Maybe i'm too quick to judge Snyder, but after seeing sucker punch i know i don't like him as a director.

    Despite the box office numbers and the Rotten Tomatoes review, MOS is one of the top Comic book movies ever made. Certainly one of the most intense and emotional comic book adaptations made to date. And the origin story flashbacks were brilliant! They allowed for the story to progress past what we already know, but it still evokes the emotion that most comic book movies lack.

    Why does everyone hate this film? Repetitive action? Pissed off Aliens are killing each other, what do you expect? No character development? No, LITTLE character development. Soppy? Just because it isn't a comedy like The Avengers? People's expectations were Shawshank Redemption great. Man Of Steel was good, nothing more, nothing less.

    I've just watched the superman movie and comparing it to the recent one's, I've came across that superman is very difficult to make comparing it to batman and spider man; BTW, those movies were amazing can't wait for the next batman movie. Again i get the fact that superman is hard to make. Still it lacks on story based, many questions were why? and the lady reporter got pretty annoying of just trying to look for superman which then the actual fighting began in almost an hour.... Apparently, The bad guys are there making his father death and mother useless... Didn't get me confused but huh.. stupid? The fighting part, I was excited to see and it was shit too.

    This film is a masterpiece. And this is coming from someone who doesn't like Superman that much. And no one seems to understand the fact that he was literally only Superman for a day. He's a beginner. It's like learning karate. You just aren't good at it in 1 day it takes time. Same thing here. It's gonna take him awhile to become the Superman we know. He's not thinking "Oh I need to lead him out of the city". He's thinking "I need to stop this guy before he kills everyone". Also Zod wasn't just gonna follow him out of the city. Leaving the city would just give Zod the time to kill everyone. Zod's only objective was to kill everyone, so yeah combine all those things, people will die and the city would collapse. But it's better than the entire world being destroyed

    When a Superman movie and a Godzilla movie come out the same year, and Superman has a higher body count than GODZILLA, there might be something wrong with your Superman movie.

  • @deadzombies4496

    @deadzombies4496

    9 жыл бұрын

    For one thing, Superman is a NOOB in Man of Steel so the body count because of him crashing into buildings and being unable to save civilians from the terraformer/earthquakes is an effect of him not EVER having had a fight in such an environment, with such an opponent, in such a scale. This movie shows Superman's FIRST real fight as Superman. He made mistakes, miscalculated his own strength at times and also that of Zod but he learned from them. Godzilla however was a snorefest. Everytime he came on screen, your hopes would go up that you'd see some nice Godzilla stomping action but he just roars a couple times and the camera cuts away to humans and their problems. Better use of the license? Man of Steel hands down.

    Man of Steel was a great movie. People criticize the story but they're so focused on the amount of action that they don't usually take the time to analyze the story. The story was really good and the action was paced out so that when it happens it made sense. Superman isn't the perfect Superman everyone is expecting yet because Clark literally just put on the suit and learned to fly when Zod came. He didn't have a chance to even train yet. Superman may be really powerful but it doesn't mean he so overpowering that he can save everyone. When people complain why Superman didn't save more people, he was busy either fighting Zod's people or taking out the world maker. When Superman and Zod were battling in Metropolis, people missed that the section of the city where they fighting was abandoned and when they were in an area where there were people, the editing showed that no one got killed. Superman was toned down to a level where he could be more relatable and as realistic as a Superman movie could be. Superman had to kill Zod because Zod placed him in an impossible situation where he had to kill him to stop him from wiping out the human race. Also, if he didn't kill him, what would he do with Zod then?

    +DESHI BASARA At least this movie dares to have consequences, not like Marvel who literally can't commit to a single character's death. We need despair to know hope; but dickwads like you want everyone to be safe and happy and to get a medal. In a culture of spineless morals and dickless leaders, at least Man of Steel isn't afraid to say that freedom isn't free and that hope doesn't spring forth from nothing. With all the 9/11 imagery, didn't you love how involved the military and police department were? Superman works WITH humanity to better itself, not like Marvel's SHIELD who gets unlimited money and goes behind everyone's backs.

  • @deshibasara7069

    @deshibasara7069

    spencer2207 I agree, I never feel concerned about the conflicts and violence in Marvel movies because I know there's always a happy ending. They never address the death count (if there is any) or the collateral damage. I didn't hate MOS, I actually thought it did a lot of things good, but I do agree with most of the criticism. I don't mind there being dark elements to the film, but it didn't feel hopeful enough for a Superman movie. It would have been great if the movie was mostly hopeful, and then the sudden shift in darkness with the terraforming but instead the movie was dark and grey for the most part.

  • @spencer2207

    @spencer2207

    8 жыл бұрын

    +DESHI BASARA I believe that may just be a "Snyderism" or perhaps the result of a Snyder/Nolan partnership. Both of their oeuvre are dark and somewhat gritty. Also MoS is being told from the perspective of Clark who literally feels like a freak, unlike the 1978 Clark who feels slightly uncomfortable about his powers until his father's death. And that's another thing too, I think Ma and Pa Kent in MoS lean to being a bit more strict about Clark's potential because of a stricter adherence to being God-fearing; a feeling that permeates the entire film. As a believer myself, this isn't a criticism, but a welcome wrinkle in the characters that doesn't get explored very often in modern cinema. Actually never. The Kent family believe in Christ, and therefore treat Superman's powers as akin to literally being an agent of Salvation or Damnation, according to Clark's free will. This falls in line with the persona of humble farmers from the flyover states. Even in 1978 Ma Kent says they have long prayed for a child, and the Lord saw fit to send them one. Looking at the darkness from this perspective, it takes on a whole new meaning, and MoS becomes allegorical to real life. We all have trials that seem bigger than ourselves, but God sends us help in the form of angels (unseen from heaven, or in the form of friends and family) or His literal Son to come to earth and suffer with us. They help us fight and the casualties are high and (as will be explored in BvS) we question and challenge our faith due to the terrible road we've travelled.

    Reading the comments here shows me why there will never be a good superman movie series. This movie tried to make supes a more relatable character instead of the boy scout godling the Christopher reeves movies made him out to be, and everyone freaked. These hardcore fans would rather have their 1 dimensional boy scout instead of a realistic person, but if you make a movie with that character the average movie goer won't want to watch it because its BORING (see every superman movie since 1980 for reference). Honestly he's a character you can't win with. If you go with the classic you lose at the box office, if you try something new you lose with the critics. It just can't be done.

    thank you SOOOO MUCH angry joe... finally there's a review by someone who loved it and which actually shows the great things in this movie and doesn't b**ch like a child... Personally i loved the flashbacks, they were emotional and brilliantly done and as for the action, well i like the "small" things they put in there to emphasize that he is Superman: like Faora throwing him across town to be stopped only by a vault door, his flight (with the best superhero music i've ever heard) was just sheer velocity and when he begins to fight Zod in the sky he punches him several km whilst flying after him and punching him further and flying after him... Fantastic film - i watched it twice and wish i went a third time to see it in 3D - i can't wait to get the DVD for Christmas =)

    It was an amazing movie, ..Then...you have your Nolan Batman fans that think it should be a drama masked as a hero movie lol... Man of Steel was great though, I like how they broke up the flash backs instead of going the captain American route...which spent half the movie on his origin. I still like the movie but it started slow.

    one thing that could have improved this film is more subtlety. the world engine had flames coming from it's top like steampunkish, and the explosions were plentiful, some could have been toned down imo. great film though. they made superman epic yet not totally 'indestructible', he had problems and was more human than i expected. they also explained plot points in a good way, watch closely and you'll see that not much is missed by the writers.

    I rated this movie a 3/5. It's pacing was iffy, the action made no sense to me because of it's shaky cam, the screenplay was painfully average, and the characterization of Superman himself irked me. But I'd say the special effects were amazing, acting was great, and the action (despite not making sense) was entertaining. On terms of film quality, it's just like Thor and Captain America; but doesn't even come close to the X-Men, The Dark Knight and the Spider-Man 2

    Joe, I agree with most points except two: 1. Lois Lane actually felt like the wrong kind of "strong and confident" type compared to most source material. Though that might be just me and my preference. 2. The editing DID fail at one crucial aspect: the colors were too dull. The Dark Knight trilogy may have pulled off the gritty dull color scheme, but that's because it's GOTHAM. It's a recognized shithole. Metropolis is supposed to be the bright nowandforever-type city. Imagine the impact and how much closer we could've been to the edge of the seat if the fight between Zod and Supes was in bright colors; or if the explosions were in glorious orane fireballs instead of the warm fireplace orane they used. Just my two cents.

    You can tell that Snyder and Nolan did not actually want to put in Lois Lane, at least not as a regular character, but somewhere along the line someone told them to put her in. It kind of reminds me how Sam Raimi was forced to put Venom in Spiderman 3 even though he didn't want to.

  • @fannybill4594

    thejoexman Christopher Nolan is one of the biggest name in Hollywood right now, if Nolan and Snyder didn't want to put Lois or any other character in the film, they could easily do so, they didn't put Jimmy Olsen in the movie did they. Lois and other character in the film serve a purpose, and help move the storyline forward. There is no evidence to suggest that they were told to put her in the film. Amy Adams performance as Lois Lane was perfectly fine in the film, you either like her as Lois or you don't.

    fanny bill There is one entity both Nolan and Snyder had to answer to: DC Comics. If they didn't do what they wanted, DC would take their toys back. Don't get me wrong, I love the film and I love Amy Adams in the role but her character does feel like a fifth draft addition, or at least the romance does. Jimmy Olsen (aside from being in the movie as a female) is not a character that they NEEDED and if they had decided to leave him out, it would be understandable. Again, I really do love the movie.

    ***** I know what you're saying, about pacing and such. I think that approach works well with Batman, because you can draw parallels between his past, and the events he's currently facing. however I don't think the same is really needed for Superman. this is just my opinion, but I think the Donner film, and the first 3 episodes of Superman TAS did a better job at introducing Superman, and setting up his world, while also being told in a normal straightforward narrative.

    gogetta159 lol, you're talking about the product placement. overall product placement isn't that big a deal, it's part of the business. but at the same time, it doesn't add anything to the film either. it could have just been called Pancake Place and that would be fine. it's rare to find those examples, like in Pulp Fiction where the fact that they were talking about McDonald's was actually important.

  • @triumph2992

    I loved the movie, but here are 3 things that they could have included to keep people from bitching. 1. Clark's dad actually having a secret motive to why he doesn't want Clark to show his powers. Not just "the world is not ready for you" but "You are not ready for the world.". Ma Kent could have revealed later in the movie that Pa Kent could feared what Clark would turn out to be if he was praised like a God. Thus giving more meaning to his sacrifice, making Clark honor his father's wishes. After all power corrupts and who has more power than superman? 2. Superman (in the suit) saving individual lives. People forget about the Oil Rig and the School bus because it wasn't Superman doing the saving. Yes he saved the world and those people at the end, but Zod used him as a wrecking ball during their last fight so people associated him with being the cause of collateral damage. A few instances where Clark is shown in his suit protecting "Joe Everyman" from falling debris, or just plain falling would solidify him more as a Super Hero and less of an Action Hero. 3. A few well placed jokes. One thing that I can't defend about the movie (and remember I loved the movie) is the lack of ANY humor. Three funny moments (genuine, laugh out moments, not chuckles) is all that was needed to break the tension and allow both critics and fans to take it less seriously and therefore enjoy it more. What do you think as someone who loved or hated the movie? Would this have made a difference to ease a lot of the debate over the film?

    Man of Steel made Superman more relatable to humanity than any of the Batman films (to date) have made Bruce Wayne-who actually IS human, though Frank Miller-ized to the point that he's only good for action scenes now (just saying). First time I watched it, I did doze off for a min in the middle-but not because the subject matter was boring. I think I was tired that day, but I KNOW the movie had some pacing issues. Which is understandable given all that they were trying to show. Good review, AJ. Hey man, give the sequel a reasonable amount of understanding as you did this one-it may surprise you.

    Chandler Thornton Well put. Batman Begins was a refreshing take on the character, but Bruce Wayne was pretty vanilla. I've never seen him as relatable to humanity because of a number of reasons: he's stupid rich, he only expresses two emotions-anger and sadness, he's apparently a genius, he's also such a ninja-like badass that Al Ghul (sp?) wanted him to be his right hand/successor...At one point I was like, "OK OK OK. He's DC's answer to Superman. We get it."

    Man of Steel to me is far better and a lot more memorable than any Marvel film I've seen to date, not just because I'm a DC fanboy because I like Marvel too, but because this movie made you think, it had a great plot, deep emotional impact, mind blowing action scenes, great character development, a great score by Hans Zimmer. It left an impact on me, made me come out of the theater in tears of joy, while whenever I come out of a Marvel movie I simply say... well that was good.

However, the pacing and mood were way off. It felt unpleasant to watch. It's funny how such a simple thing throws everything off balance. I was thinking throughout the whole movie the plots interesting but I feel bored and sad. I felt so disconnected. The music, the dark tint, and just the tone made the movie not enjoyable for me.
