I actually like Superman the best when he does super mundane stuff and is just nice to people. I believe there is an old comic where he saves a farmer from suicide because a bank wasn’t willing to pay him. So he went to the bank and told them to pay the farmer. It’s cool when he kicks ass, but it’s also cool when he helps individuals with their problems

Jonathan Kent's death would've made more sense if he had died of natural causes like a heart attack. Giving Superman more weight as even though he's the most powerful being in the universe, he can't still save everyone but when he has the ability to save he will. In this way him snapping Zod's neck would've made more sense and more impactful.

I agree. When I saw John Kent just standing there, all I could think was 'Run, you moron.' I couldn't figure out how he thought Clark, a 16-year-old in good shape, would be discovered by running faster than a guy in his 50s.

The only downside to Jonathan Kent dying from a heart attack is now every incarnation of Superman uses that plot thread. I do understand that Jonathan Kent dying from a natural causes is an effective and provocative way to teach Clark his powers can’t solve everything like something natural, but does it always have to be a frigging heart attack? Why not another natural cause like a stroke or kidney failure or cancer. There are other natural causes Jonathan Kent can die from that Clark wouldn’t be able to prevent. I just don’t get why most writers always have to pick heart attack.

Even the series Smallville had John Kent die of heart attack and it way more heartbreaking than Man of Steel because we actually saw the love and bond that Clark and his adopted father had for each other in 5 seasons. Making so heartbreaking when he finally died from a from heart attack protecting Clark's secret from Lionel Luthor.

Nope. Doomsday's story is that whenever it dies, something (varies from storyline to storyline) creates a new clone that's supposed to be better equipped to overcome whatever killed the previous iteration. Over millenia, it dies and is improved into the ultimate predator and killing machine. It dies rather often. And the movie it's a zombie baby of daddy lex and daddy zod, and dies within a couple hours. So no, not immortal there either.

Metrion77 thats not what i read in my research or fragments. Heck, when supes comes back to fight him again he realizes doomsday CAN'T DIE so he actually takes him to the end of time so he could be "defeated" aka exile in a sense

What makes me laugh is that Zodds punishment was to be evacuated from the planet. Also makes you wonder why they couldn't evacuate everyone else, or at least some! 😂

I think the reason this version of superman got so much flack is because we've only known him in a particular way for so long. For so many people, seeing a hero they looked up to for their childhood in a different way and not as the optimistic superhero from the comics, it turns them away.

Thing is, Superman in the comics has had plenty of moments of self doubt, despair and rage in the comics. Yes, he's largely an optimistic and positive figure, but he's not a constantly smiling sentient rainbow. Even Christopher Reeve's Superman was a lot more nuanced than the perpetually smiling boy scout Superman Gatekeepers make him out to be.

I like the roles/groups Critic, Joe and Zod represent in this review. Joe represents the fans of Man of Steel, while Critic and Zod represent the fans of the Reeves Quadrilogy (Or rather the first 2 movies), but whereas Critic is open to understanding what people liked about Man of Steel, Zod is a firm hater and very much embodies the toxic side of the Reeves fanbase.

Maybe the first with science-fiction-based powers, but there were early masked heroes like Robin Hood, the Scarlet Pimpernel, Zorro, et. al. If Siegel & Schuster hadn't been the first to do it, I'm pretty sure a similar character would have come out, around the same time. The basic Superman template was inevitable.

oh boy... well personally I think it is in tight competition with Attack of the Clones for worse Star Wars movie to exist due to some incredibly stupid writing (like how the fuck did you manage to screw up Luke fucking skywalkers character? HOW!), very obvious political pandering (like that whole pointless venture to the casino planet for starters), displaying little regard for established lore ( the hyperspace ram scene is the obvious one), and screwed up everything JJ Abrams tried to set up in TFA. now as for Rian Johnson I do not think he should direct another star wars movie ever again and Kathleen Kennedy really needs to stop trying to shove politics to everything, look i know the hate got old quick but both of them really did do some series damage to the star wars franchise and a lot of fans are not happy about it (myself included)

As a kid (born 1991) i used to unironically wonder "why isnt there a Super man movie? How come batman gets all the movies?" I really thought the 2005 movie really was his theatrical debut. It wouldnt be until my 20s that i find out there Are MULTIPLE Superman movies (just from before i was born).

Why didn't Zod go and terraform Mars or another planet? There was no reason to destroy Earth to recreate Krypton, and it would have been easier to convince Superman to give them the codex.

Lord Rahl nope, the machines didn't have the energy to do so. Those machines aren't magic. They were salvaged from kryptonian outpost which were probably thousands of years old.

Whether you like this movie or not you have to admit, Hans Zimmer nailed it with his music score.

Superman killing Zod makes sense to me too, here it's a young version of the character, he's dealing with a vilain from his planet with god-like powers, and once Zod's plan failed, he has no purpose left except vengeance by killing all humans and superman (he is in a kind of suicide mode), so when he feels he is about to lose, he pushes Superman to kill him by threatening humans, leaving him no other choice to save them in a short time

@Kryptoskillet Oh no, a godlike being that was raised by humans and has had powers most of his life isn't doing anything to protect anyone and even actively threw Zodd through a fucking gas station like an idiot while also leaving his mom with two other of these bad people for no reason. I always assumed godlike would include some sort of intelligence, but I guess not. Remember in Injustice when Superman tackled Doomsday up into space and then back down into the Fortress of Solitude? What a dope, a good superhero just destroys a city with reckless abandon because it looks cool. To be fair though, it's not like Doomsday is as powerful as Zodd. It's not like Superman could just snap his neck or anything....

The film beats you on the nose with Jonathan's pretentious diatribes about being ready, and after 3 decades he still isn't. Completely absurd. And don't get me started on the terraforming idiocy. There are multiple ways he could have prevented that. For one, taking out the one in damn city first with his heat vision. Then suggests creating a fucking black hole. A BLACK HOLE! Do Goyer and Snyder know how black holes work? That shit would have been catastrophic. It is baffling how dumb the characters in this movie are. Zodd with the genius idea to teraform a planet with advanced militaries and a super kryptonian, and Superman with his oh so tough decision to "give humans a chance" despite not having any reason NOT to. Hmm, the people who raised me or the psycho mass murderers who want to kill billions of people. Such a tough choice. Next you're gonna be telling me that he'd be fine with killing thousands of embryos but devastated by killing one sociopathic mass murderer.

+laz kar -- Yes. Those would be the best examples. The Fantastic Four tried to avoid that, by being open with their identities, and courting public opinion, but eventually they became resented too. And the Avengers have been dysfunctional from the get-go. I find it very weird when people claim "DC was always darker." SO not true! But "dark" isn't the ultimate virtue, anyway, so I usually don't argue about it.

Doomsday is literally barely sentient, if he is at all. seeing as how every time he dies another clone is made, he is basically a literal rampaging toddler. It's more akin to killing a crocodile to protect yourself than killing an actual thinking being

I will make an argument during the fighting with Zod that I really didn't notice until I watched it again after TP's review. Superman is constantly trying to move the fighting with Zod's cronies and they keep throwing him back into things because they don't care about collateral. Superman is literally trying to throw them away at points

This is probably one of my favorite nostalgia critic episodes

Superman didn't kill Zod in Superman II. You cannot conclude either way whether Zod and the others died or not but it's more likely they survived, because there was the deleted scene of them being arrested after the fight scene. Even though it is a deleted scene, so not necessarily canonical although it possibly is, it does still prove that the director and crew didn't think that fight scene necessitated that Zod, Ursa and Non died, so we can't conclude that. Additionally, what the deleted scene implies is that they more likely survived.

Critic fails to mention that the Kryptonians totally jacked the Timelords' style, yo.

I also find the Nolan ray argument full of shit because while Nolan was involved with the story he didn't actually have any involvement in the script. David S Goyer wrote the script on his own.

0:00-2:56 this is sure to be an interesting piece of internet history as we look back on the decade of movies that was the DCEU, talk about what they did worth good or bad and seeing how things go with James Gunn being in charge of all things DC now with a brand new Superman movie on the way for 2025 (a whole decade after the original release date of BVS, the then sequel to Man of Steel)

No matter the controversy of this movie and everything. Years later I still sit here and break down seeing superman cry out after killing Zod… he took a life… yes he had no choice. But he didn’t want to have to do that, he lost the last piece of his species because he had to make that choice in a split second… I wish so intensely we had at least a few minutes of silence… allowed to ponder what we just saw. The man from another world… the symbol… painfully broken to a crumbled mess of pieces

I read somewhere that they considered the idea of not killing Zod, but locking him in a cryochamber on a Kryptonian ship (I don't remember why).
