DAREDEVIL (2003): Better Than You Remember
Фильм және анимация
Stuck at home during a pandemic, I decided it was time to rewatch one of the weirder comic book movies from the early 2000s. Today, we tackle 2003's Daredevil... and how it is actually better than you remember.

I still wish I just saw the Director’s Cut of Daredevil. It’s a more complete product than the theatrical.
Truth be told, I freaking love Daredevil: Director's Cut. It's what made me fall in love with the character to begin with. This movie is indeed a love letter to the comic books, and not just the Frank Miller version. It's more than obvious that Mark Steven Johnson adores Daredevil and his mythos, in the same way Sam Raimi loves Spider-Man. And in my eyes, Ben Affleck played a phenomenal Matt Murdock/Daredevil. I loved how they explored the struggles that Matt has to face on a daily basis. The entire flashback of Matt as a child feels like its own short film, it's so good. And I don't know about you, but this is one of those superhero movies in which the cinematography really makes it feel like a living comic book.

Positives: * Blindsense was AMAZING * Colin Farrel as Bullseye * Micheal Clarke Duncan as Kingpin * Moments from the comics integrated really well * Daredevil's wonderful character arc of realizing if he doesn't want to be "the bad guy" he needs to be better than them and develop a No-Kill rule * Evanesence rocks, screw you * Even though its a serious take on a serious story, it's still a comic book superhero and not afraid to have cheesy fun * The rest of the cast is solid too Negatives: * Elektra could have been developed a little better. Just a little. ........WHY is this movie hated again?!?!

I still remember how there was a whole plot cut out from the movie. And yeah, Daredevil wasn’t the worst, but it was very much of its time. We had yet to know what true badness was.
I loved this movie. I think it’s a great early 00’s comic book film. Affleck was AMAZING and I enjoyed this interpretation probably more than the Netflix show.
I genuinely love this movie, it's such a hilarious time capsule. Colin Farrell gives one of the best comic book villain performances thus far. I freaking love the moment where right after he kills Elektra's father he taps the bullseye on his forehead and goes "Bullseye. Eh eh" Chefs kiss.

This movie is what made me fall in love with Daredevil! 😭 idc! Everything was amazing in my book. So dark & gritty but still epic & fantastical
DareDevil has been one of my favorite superhero movies for a long time. I remember watching in 2012. And seeing the scene where you see Matt’s back covered in scars. And I said to my friend sitting next to me. That Ben Affleck would make a Great Batman. Because that scene reminded of a Alex Ross Painting of Bruce Wayne With his back coveres in scars. So when I first heard the Ben Affleck was gonna be playing Batman. I was probably the only person in the world who thought he’d be perfect for the roll.
also commendable in the 2003 version was the relationship between Matt and the priest. always felt that his role as spiritual advisor was solid and steady, much more believable than the quirky or quasi-angsty tropes that are increasingly prevalent from the 2010s onward in pop culture.
I also really wish for a Daredevil game. A Daredevil game set in the same universe from Spider-Man PS4 is my dream.

What a hot take! I might find the film way too cheesy now, but as a kid it really blew my mind. It's glad to see a movie review that just embrace the fun.
The reason the theatrical cut sucked is because some of the higher ups at FOX, mainly Tom Rothman, wanted the film to be more of a summer blockbuster than a gritty crime movie which is also why there a so many CGI shots in the movie
Wait a second... in your Daredevil Season 3 video you said and I quote "...Absolutely love Pointdexter/Bullseye... Lemme just say he was probably the seasons best character if I'm being completely honest" as well as "Wilson Bethel... So good, I love every scene with him he adds so much to the show" (insert that confused look emoji)

I love this movie.
I actually really like this film
It's also one of the few costumed hero films to use narrative, and has the twist of opening in a retrospective way, and then continues.
grew up with this movie and batman and robin so I always saw these movies as golden cinema love to re watch them and go back to my childhood.
I wasn't even born in 2003 but I still remember watching this movie
I remember seeing it in theatres at a young age. Then we got it on VHS, lent it to someone, never got it back... Never gonna forget about that... Now I have it on some bargain bin dvd.
I agree for most part but Farrell doesn't say "hello karen it's nice to see you again"
Fun fact: While Charlie Cox had problems with this movie, he actually really liked Ben Affleck as Matt Murdock!
I never understood why it got so much hate.
Added to favourites, for it has Roby talking about a guilty pleasure of mine.
Fantastic analysis! I both agree and disagree. I like watching the movie in a "so-bad-it's-good-way", but upon rewatch of the director's cut a few months back with a friend of mine, I realized just how genuinely good some moments are. While I disagree with your stance on Bullseye, I strongly believe that Michael Clarke Duncan's Kingpin is vastly superior to Vincent D'onofrio's version even if I love both. Having said all that, I'm glad people are starting to look back at old CBM and seeing the good in them. I would love to see an analysis vid on Tim Story's Fantastic Four (I'm personally really big fans of them). Also deep nerd shit fact: In the official Marvel multiverse, this film's universe is labeled as Earth-701306
Great vid mate! I honestly think that Daredevil is a good, solid movie; especially the directors cut!
Its that kinda cheesy bonkers 00's comic book film. Its one of a kind. Love it! Ben affleck would have done wonders with better material too.

The Director's Cut kicks ass.
I love this movie too especially the director's cut
The directors cut is actually a pretty significant jump in quality
You didn't talk about Jon Favreau as Foggy Nelson
I definitely do enjoy watching this movie once in a while. However there is one criticism that it's gotten from people that I kind of agree with. The movie basically replaces his sight with a "radar sense". Which is not the same as taking his sight away, in fact it's basically giving it back. I never watched the Netflix version but I've heard that he was fully blind thus enhancing his other senses which makes more sense and is at least a little more compelling.
@torinreese4829

The Netflix version isn’t comic accurate in that sense, this movie is
I for one love Ang Lee's The Hulk
Also that seen when he’s depressed in the office and Foggy is play trash basketball and lying about missing the shot. Affleck acts the best Matthew Murdock in that scene. Yes there is a lot of unnecessary things going on in that movie. But at the same time when it comes to the nature of daredevil. It hits like a sis in Electra’s hand.
Provided Disney/Marvel and Feige doesn't trash, reboot and recast everything and brings the current iteration, cast and continuity back having Dr Strange pay a visit to this version of Daredevil sounds fun.
I really loved this movie. I don't know why, it was just so watchable to me
The director's cut version of daredevil 2003 was better but with more action

Yeah it really is and the daredevil comics are really good as well but daredevil the Netflix series has inspired a lot of people like a lot of people
It has bullseye catch falling pieces of glass and throwing them at a blind guy who notices pretty girls by smelling them and fighting them in child's playground
Great video bro and can’t wait for your next video! I really loved Daredevil Director Cut when I was a kid (yes you heard me right a kid). I also loved the Netflix’s Daredevil too.
I agree with you. Daredevil (2003) is fucking awesome! I enjoyed the hell out of it as a kid and I still enjoy it now. I just don’t get the hatred for this movie at all, although the only thing I find cheesy about it is the playground fight scene. Other than that, the rest of the film is good. People shouldn’t judge a movie based on one bad scene.
4:32 EmpLemon says that villains who are pure evil for the sake of it are forgettable and unrealistic but is oblivious to the real type of people in the real world
I go on record for saying this is my favorite daredevil media
I absolutely love this movie it's what got me into Daredevil when I was a kid obviously the Netflix verisom is the best. But this film has a special place in my heart and I still want a sequel.
While I love Netflix's Daredevil, it's incredibly terrified and ashamed of what it is at heart: A superhero show. Daredevil has no costume, no billy club and his powers barely even matter, I think we see the so-called "world on fire" like once. That's like making a Batman show where Batman has no bat costume, no bat gadgets, no Batmobile. Just make a ninja movie then! Or the terrible version of Superman that Kevin Smith told us came close to existing where Superman had no Superman costume, Superman was "street" and didn't fly. In contrast, Movie Daredevil is much closer to the comic books. He's a terrifying fighter that beats rooms full of mooks with machine guns easily and even while injured still defeated Bullseye and Kingpin in brutal fashion, while Netflix DD gets beat up by normal thugs. Movie Daredevil has his costume from the get go (and a sweet ass lair instead of a foot locker), he has a fully realized billy club that turns into a variety of weapons from clubs to nunchaku to a staff to a grappling hook etc. And we see exactly how Daredevil's radar sense works, it is extremely important throughout the film whereas in the show it's barely even shown once.
This was the first superhero movie I properly watched and I loved it especially the soundtrack it's a banger
Gotta love the editing style of roby. Real clean and classy
As a Metalhead I love the soundtrack for this film
i just watched it and i loved it so
my mans Mark Steven Johnson could've made a better Ghost Rider movie. he has a great cast, and with a little more tweaking, the movie could've been great. it ended up being pretty mediocre though. and how come they didn't use THE Ghost Rider theme song (Suicide's 1977 classic)?. that's one of the greatest sins from that movie. I think I might give Daredevil a try based on your observations.
I think Ben Affleck's Daredevil should have got a trilogy without rushing him to fight Kingpin since he is the main villain. The first Daredevil movie should have been about his origin "The man without fear" using the black suit and the villain could have been Mister Fear. The second Daredevil movie would be introducing Elektra finally in his heroine suit and Thomas Jane's Punisher as an Antiheroic ally while the villains would be Owl and The Hand. Pretty much like Season 2. And the third one would be something like "Shadowland" and "Born Again" where Daredevil finally gets to fight Kingpin and Bullseye, but Daredevil has the help of some of his fellows like Elektra, Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man, Luke Cage played by The Rock, Iron Fist played by Joaquin Phoenix and Jessica Jones played by Anne Hathaway.
I actually loved the daredevil movie as a kid, back when it didn’t matter if the plot was even coherent

I'm just so happy that someone can say somethinh good about it for once lol.
Right Colin Farrell’s bullseye is no where near as good as the excellent poindexter we got in season 3 he was fucking amazing. Farrell is weird and awkward doesn’t know what kind of character he is properly. The charisma is just hammy dialogue saying that I’ll be sure to give it a rewatch cuz I saw a load of cool comic book cinematography watching this video I do not remember. Thank u for that.

Osian Coleman I loved Collin’s portrayal. I like loose performances where the actor can just shine and just go crazy. I think Collin’s portrayal was more memorable (imo) than Poindexter from the Netflix series. Not to say the Netflix one wasn’t amazing but Collin’s portrayal has so much LIFE & CHARACTER - I hold it dear to my heart ❤️ lol
Dude idk what you guys are smokin. I tried watching this movie yesterday (the directors cut) and I couldn’t get 30 minutes in without shutting it off. The fight scene with Affleck and Garner in the park is so random and ridiculous. They also give daredevil the powers of Spider-Man…it’s just so silly and dark. I want to love this movie but it’s just so silly.
I love 2003 daredevil I grew up with it and if you say it’s bad you never seen the comics a lot of it is from the comics😊
The film is a time capsule of early 2000s action films but I'll admit, I have a soft spot for it. Like you said, Michael Clark Duncan and Colin Farrell were pitch perfect in their roles, Ben Affleck does his best with the material he has but it's just not a strong script or a strong director. I feel like if this was given to more capable screenwriters and a better director, the film would've been amazing.
I give the director's cut 7.3/10
I dont care what anyone says this is one of those movies that made my childhood and ill show this to my kids one day. Love this movie i also dont take superhero movies seriously so i dont mind that its cheesy

Great video, as always. Have fond memories of seeing this movie in the theatre in my youth. It reflected much of what was de rigueur at the time - the intrusive, borderline offensive rock soundtrack, the OTT performances, CGI fight scenes, dutch angles.. A relic of a bygone era. The director's cut was streets ahead of the theatrical cut. It gave the movie much needed breathing space. Gotta disagree on your stance re Bullseye though. Bethal brought a Ledger-esque intensity to the role. Fundamentally though, they are chalk and cheese interpretations of the same character. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Would love to hear your thoughts on Reign of Fire, should you ever wish to do a deep dive on it. A huge guilty pleasure of mine that boasts maximum testosterone.
