Daredevil has some of the best long takes on screen, especially in the third season. What makes them work?
When exploring these sequences, I decided to try and edit as much of this video as possible in the same way as long takes. I only used slight dissolves here and there, but otherwise I haven't tampered with any of the footage.

    The long take daredevil fight in season 2 is about matt's decent into hell as he fights his way down. The further down he gets the more brutal he fights, if you notice the hall way lighting along the way he's gradually going into the underworld. The lower he gets the more vicious his opponent the nastier he gets. It's kind of a representation of what's matt is going through in the season. He's having to fight off more and more nasty people while at the risk of losing his humanity.

  • @hiimchrisj

    @hiimchrisj

    Slam Jackson that’s the justification for the scene itself, narratively, which is fine. But what he’s pointing out is that there’s no reason for it to be a long take aside from them wanting to repeat the highlight of the first season but make it bigger. These long takes work best when you’re trying to capture how tiring or frantic a situation is. When you want the audience to feel the protagonist’s up hill climb. But in season 2 Matt outclasses everyone he’s fighting the feeling you get from watching it is exactly what the production team’s intentions were: they’re showing off. That said it is one hell of a sequence

It felt like they were working around a budget by getting Fisk to fight Matt behind a wall, or by having Matt and Bullseye go off-screen to the balcony. Even some of the punches towards the end just don't even look like they connect at all. I left feeling pretty disappointed.

    The Prison Fight one take in Daredevil season 3 reminded me of The Children of Men one take. Interestingly enough, the director of the episode used that scene as inspiration for the prison one take. Like The Children on Men oner, the prison take is so steady and focused, but also frenetic at the same time. Masterful work.

    Daredevil season one's long take was a delightful surprise and was genuinely good storytelling. Season two's long take however felt a bit "look guys its the long take but BIGGER AND BETTER." It seemed a bit forced and the cuts were a bit too apparent. Season three's however blew it out of the water. Mixing dialogue scenes with action and not mention the sheer length plus the fact that its actually Charlie Cox for most of it and not a stunt double. Total actiongasm if that's a real thing.

    I think the DDS2 long take was more about enhancing plot than character, highlighting the stakes and geography of Frank Castle's "rescue." DD starts the scene just trying to get Frank to the ground floor, which is upset by the bikers' arriving and threatening a bystander. Rather than enter the freight elevator or try to carry Frank, leaving the residents defenseless, he chooses to essentially race Frank to the bottom through a gauntlet of bikers. Not cutting away raises the tension of knowing that Frank is still in the elevator below him, defenseless even while remaining a potential threat himself. And even after surviving that brutal fight, the long take also highlights its futility as Castle still slips away unharmed by the bikers and unnoticed by the man with the radar senses.

    You know, it's funny how i was thinking about it like yesterday and then the video popped out of my suggestions. Daredevil was infamous for its long takes in the past, but in the 3rd season, they decided to go all swagger and crank it up to eleven. Like "hey, we know it's what we're famous for, so we'll keep practicing to be the best". And man, they are. Every time it's different, and creative, and breathtaking for different reasons, in different fights. Even if they're showing off...well, who am i to complain?

You are the best creator I follow currently and Ive only known about you since yesterday. Keep bringing the quality and you'll get the views. Also, just a small tip: design your own profile pic, instead of using a stock image. Whenever I see stock image profile pics I assume that the channel isn't serious about the content it produces. Seeing a custom profile pic gives the viewer the impression that this dude is serious.

    Masterful editing, Ross. Your videos are always greatly edited, but this is next level stuff. As for the video itself, I agree with your points, but would just like to add one thing: I remember reading an interview with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu about Birdman and his decision to do the entirety of the movie in a "cheated" one take. He said that the reason was to better replicate the real-life feel of storytelling, as "our lives are a continuous one shot, we open our eyes in the morning and *boom*, it's one take until we go to sleep" and he wanted to convey the idea of the main character being trapped and desperate, we couldn't escape from the events in the movie, as the main character couldn't escape as well. It's like in horror movies, you feel dread, but you know that the camera is going to cut away at one point or the other, to something less scary. This is something I felt in S01 and s03 of Daredevil as well: in the corridor scene in s01 we are literally cramped in there with Matt, whereas in s03... Well, we are in a prison, after all. Just wanted to add this one small point to an amazing video, thanks for all you do on this channel!

It seems at times that a film has it in their lost to include at least on eking take in their film, regardless of necessity or not. I love the long take as much as Clive Owen in Children of Men, but I don't want it to ever depreciate in value. If you already haven't, I recommend Haunting of Hill House.

    An interesting topic and a well made video, thanks! The long take that impressed me the most till today was in the series 19-2 (the English one), where the main characters were called to a high school shooting and followed the shooter through the building. I was literally on the edge of my seat and to this day remember the dread I felt while watching... IMO, it beat the often cited long take from True Detective by a mile. But t I wouldn't want to see long takes everywhere, especially in action scenes because that genre uses other visual tools to built atmosphere (as showcased by the Kick-Ass example).

    Your editing has significantly improved. Looks like some clever masking techniques were used to get the different films to flow together. Well done. Seems like working on that documentary has done wonders for your filmmaking skills!

    Zero masking. The only thing I did was add a few frames of a dissolve here and there.

    After watching the Half in the Bag review of The Haunting of Hill House, where they mentioned how the long-take oners seems to have become a "trend" lately, it made me realize how unimpressed I've actually become with them. Not to say that I don't still appreciate the work and talent and co-ordination and artistic ambition and everything that goes into them, and I certainly don't mind seeing them... I don't really find them all that "impressive" anymore, to be honest. They're not really special anymore, the way they were when, say, Goodfellas did it, or even up until 2006 when Children of Men did it. And credit to Rossatron for focusing on action movie oners, because those certainly are the most impressive form of long-takes. More impressive from a fight/stunt choreography perspective than a filmmaking perspective, though. From a filmmaking perspective, I find long-takes feeling more and more routine now. There are simple tricks involved in the set-up, and it involves a lot of planning and rehearsal, and crews have to do a lot of careful timing and positioning, etc... but in terms of the number of people, the relative level of how "hard" the work is compared to normal/short takes (which obviously varies depending on the shot. A shot that's much shorter could be much harder work), and how long it takes to execute is all not necessarily more "impressive" than short takes. In fact, oners often save production time by getting a lot of screentime done at once. Crews tend to love when directors choose to do oners, because it usually means a short day, as oners tend to be the only shot scheduled on its day. 5 takes of such a big shot might seem like a lot... but it's nothing compared to how many takes are done across multiple shots on a normal day of production. Usually you're doing like 20-30 shots a day or more, with multiple takes for each one, multiple set ups, etc. Having to reset stunts and set dressing and props, etc, for every take. Doing it all at once and only redoing it 5 times is actually easier and more efficient. It might be more work all at once each time and mean more downtime between the takes, but it's faster than if you were to do everything piece-meal the usual way. I'm sure this isn't ALWAYS the case, but it usually is. Furthermore, I do often find myself succumbing to the problems that Rossatron mentions here, where the audience being aware of the long-take and any trickery involved in it can become distracting. It does tend to take me out of the story, because I become too aware of the filmmaking going on. At some point during a long enough shot, I always realize and say to myself, "Oh, has this all been one shot?" From that point on, it becomes a game of "Ooh, when's it gonna cut? How long is it gonna last? Ooh, we did a 360... Ooh, look at that timing... Ooh, the actors remembered their lines and marks, like theyre... paid... to... do... Wait, what's going on in the actual story?" That's why I wasn't really as impressed by episode 6 of Haunting of Hill House as everybody else seemed to be. It was a good episode for sure, but I did find the long takes kinda distracting me throughout. I also found that the acting was notably more theatrical in that episode. It felt more like a filmed stage-play compared to the rest of the episodes, which took me out of the story a bit. I became too aware of the production of it. There's a reason that some of the most successful oners are Spielberg's oners. He tends to keep them to about a minute or less, and they tend to be fairly subtle, with the shot changing naturally to be varied, without drawing attention to the camera movement. Often times, the camera won't move much, but the actors will change the shot size by moving closer or further away, etc. He relies on the blocking to guide the shot instead of the shot dictating the blocking. You barely tend to even notice that it's particularly long shot before it's over, but the effect of the scene just becomes a bit more "pure" as a result of being unbroken. The flashiest oners he's done are probably the spiders shot from Minority Report and the chase scene in Tintin. The former certainly drew attention to itself, in an almost breaking the fourth wall kind of way, with how the set was obviously constructed without ceilings and everything, the camera moving "through" things (another trope that is often distracting)... this one came in 2002, when I would say that long-takes were still rare and cool. Looking at it today, it's an effective shot for conveying the sense of these spiders being everywhere in the building and the tension building as they close in on Anderton, but it's done so in a stylized way that seems to accept and roll with the fact that it's going to be an obvious production as opposed to a believable reality. As for the Tintin one, it's an entirely CG movie, so it isn't really a "take", and with it already being a cartoonish reality, any distractions from trying to be immersed in the reality of the story aren't really a problem. It was fun enough and just kinda becomes a ride. An effective oner for me was the one in episode 4 of Game of Thrones season 7, where Bronn is running through the field of fire during the battle. It was less than a minute long, I think, and wasn't too complicated or stagey as to draw attention to itself. It just communicated Bronn trying to move through the battle towards the scorpion as the chaos of the battle keeps getting in his way, and the unbroken take allows us to feel more like we're in the battle instead of jumping around to different shots of the battle. It's a long-take that manages to immerse you more than distract you. I actually found it to be better than the similar one of Jon in Battle of the Bastards due to this fact, as the Jon one was noticeably more choreographed and fudged with hidden cuts that I noticed. At the end of the day, it's the scene itself that needs to be impressive, no matter how you shoot it, and the best long-takes tend to be the best scenes, regardless of being long-takes. I prefer the long-take fight in the hallway/stairwell in season 2 of Daredevil to the hallway fight in season 1, and that's probably because it's just a better fight, IMO. Him whipping the chains around and taking out the lights, moving all the way down the stairs, the fight is more brutal and fast-paced and dynamic... there's some more noticeable hidden cuts in this oner, but it doesn't matter to me because the scene itself is better, so I'm not really focusing on the fact that it's a oner. I haven't watched season 3 yet, so I can't comment on anything from that. Anyway... that's my long take on long-takes.
