Great video essay! I have to admit the first time I watched the movie in theaters (damn I'm truly missing that experience right now) I was a bit let down with the film. But growing up and watching the film again throughout the years I realized how beautiful the film is, especially with how ZS deals with the humanity side of being a godlike figure. You hit the nail on the head with that scene of Clark and Martha which is absolutely fantastic and thus making the oh so controversial "MARTHA" BvS scene have so much more of an impact. Once again, great work on the video essay and looking forward to your next vids!

I love this movie. This quote from Grant Morrison's All-Star Superman that was used in Man of Steel is all that needs to be said about this iteration of the character and this story. "You'll give the people an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you. They will stumble, they will fall, but in time, they will join you in the sun. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders." Superman's first flight scene perfectly symbolizes this as well.

We don't actually see Zod die in Donner's second film, but Superman did kill him. After he took Zod's powers away, he threw him against an ice wall over a steep, deep drop. We see him disappear in the mist as he falls to his death. On top of that, the whole scene is played out in a light hearted manner and. Superman actually seems to enjoy tossing Zod to his death. They fought in Metropolis in the Donner film and are seen destroying property, The problem is that they were stuck with practical effects at the time, There was wide spread destruction in the first Donner film (as much as and as well as they could), Superman fixed that by rotating the earth backward in time an undoing it all. You can't convince me me that Donner wouldn't have inserted MOS level of destruction if he had the FX technology that we have today.

21:30 But what would that actually accomplish? Zod wasn't going to stop until every human being was dead. So Clark flies away with Zod in tow. What then? Is Zod just going to give up now that one particular family is relatively safe? Of course not. He'll just find some other humans to kill. Killing Zod was the only option.

Hello Nick. I've been a Superman fan as long as I can remember. I watched the TV edit of Superman II more times than I can remember. I watched Superman Returns in theaters and didn't understand the hate for that film. After I saw Superman Returns, I stumbled upon a Documentary done by Bad Hat Harry(linked below). Which gave a detailed look at the history of the hero up to that point. Including pointing out the allegory to biblical figures. I then watched a few episodes of the last season of Smallville. After the teaser trailer, I was hyped as hell to see Man Of Steel. I've seen it frequently in the 8 years since it's release. It is my favorite Superman portrayal, and seeing the creation of Clark as he will be known, in conjunction with the "coming out " as Superman will always be interesting to me. Snyder planned a 5 movie arc, WB got nervous and pulled out when people flipped tf out. To quote the Cinema Wins video(an amazing vid btw) on the topic "We like to treat it like it's been 80 years of Superman, supermaning. This version is a NEW HERO" An Ideal Of Hope is the name Hans Zimmer used for the leitmotif for Clark. Which is used throughout all of the iterations of this Superman (except for Josstice league, which is a rant for another time). It definitely sold the moment I fully accepted Henry as Superman, was when Jor-El tells Clark that he and Lara wanted Kal to know what it meant to be human, before becoming a bridge between Earth and Krypton. Sadly the consequences for taking on that burden we see in the next films, till we get the comic accurate Superman in ZSJL. A complete arc. kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2qaytuwZMTSoto.html

21:32 Even if he tried to avert Zod from killing people in any way like closing his eyes or shifting his face, it won't matter. Because Zod is hell bent on killing humanity as a last resort to the sole purpose for which he was born He had a duty to protect his people, and he has no people left so there's only one way to stop him and that was the most difficult decision of Clark to kill him Clark regretted it, but inside he also knew that there was no other option. Even if he tries again to take him away from civilians, he just comes back to them again

What I find interesting is how everyone forgets that Reeve's Superman also KILLED Zod, it just wasn't done in-camera. And in 79 Superman, Zod is actually a HUMAN at the time he's killed. In MoS, Zod is an unstoppable god, a being even more powerful than Superman in many regards who's an imminent threat to ALL of humanity. Zod could have murdered MILLIONS in a matter of hours if left to his own devices. I find Man of Steel to be a MUCH better Superman and a much better hero, as he's more realistic and more relatable. The point of Superman is to be a symbol of hope IN SPITE OF everything that happens to him.

One of the main complaints I hear about this film is that it's humourless - I can only answer that by saying that when I went to the theatre to see it, I had a MASSIVE grin on my face for most of the length of the movie. Henry Cavil's superman to me has more of maturity, physical and relatability than Christopher's Superman. Man of Steel in my opinion is the greatest Superman ever made not to take away from the incredible depiction by Christopher and awesome script of original Superman, MoS to me is simply on another level in turns of different take on Superman in more of modern take, storytelling, emotional connections, Zack Snyder's amazing action sequences, original scores, visual and inspiration for hopes representing by Man of Steel. Man of steel magnified how selfless is like by some of the characters throughout its storytelling mark the purpose and belief come to made what Superman is becoming and about. Man of Steel had successfully transform the typical superman feel into more of contemporary and fill with more of meaning and purpose for the character! Oh, Michael Shannon's villain role in general Zod was fantastic as well and the final battle scene where Superman has to make the toughest choice of his life to kill the only other Kryptonian left in the universe in order to save vulnerable human family stamp his no kill mentality. Imagine a man with his super power but has no concern for killing...that is what make superman the greatest superhero, he realized that he can easily kill anyone in the universe, but he has the ultimate choice to NOT DO SO! That is what Man of Steel my greatest pick for all Superman movies, the true purpose of superman was beautifully shown throughout the movie.

I remember this was the first superman i saw on the big screen, before i grew up on superman returns and watched that movie to the displeasure of my parents. I remember walking out and loving the movie but ultimately forgetting it because i was like 9 years old. Eventually i kept hearing about how man of steel was trash and it got the character wrong and as a teen at the time i was inclined to agree without even rewatching the movie. After i stumbled on man of steel on Netflix I watched it with my parents and thought “why did i hate this?” This was literally superman in the real world trying to do the right thing. Superman has been and will always be my favourite hero and man of steel is one of my favourite interpretations of superman as well as being one of my top 5 favourite superhero movies and it sucks some people don’t see that

I believe they said "In order to believe in Superman you must first believe that a man "CANNOT" fly" And thats the rub. We take it so forgranted that we have superheroes now days. But superman was meant to be hope for OUR world. Much like another quote he was "meant to fight the battles we never could". Without sups...you don't get superheoes really.

I loved Man Of Steele on the first watch. The movie is epic on various levels. From never-before-seen action sequences, Krypton, Smallville Esq character building from his adolescence. God being an alien. The Christian nodes throughout the film, the plot, and overall character developments form the cast. Superman's suit was a new adaption as well. The sonic boom when he flys. Zack did his thing. He made superman a reality. A straight-up SYFY flick like the Dark Knight trilogy. These four movies changed the game in the superhero department.

Let me preface this comment by saying you've put together a well-made video. I appreciate that you acknowledged that films--- all forms of media, really-- are inherently subjective. What hits the mark for one person, won't necessarily for another person. Subjectively speaking, Man of Steel misses the mark completely for me. I own the blu ray more out of a sense of wanting to support the genre than anything else. I mention this to demonstrate that I have given the film multiple viewings. I can also say that I surprisingly enjoyed the Snyder Justice League. I like Cavill's look and how he's tried to embrace the expectations that come alone with portraying Superman. In interviews, he's personable, charismatic, and charming. I desperately *want* to like this version of Superman. I just don't. I recognize Snyder's intentions, but I genuinely feel that he failed, time and again, in the execution. You mention that the Smallville battle is where many fans jump off. Maybe so, but for me it's *anything* and *everything* connected to Pa Kent. Costner did a good job with the material written, but that material is tantamount to character assassination. There's absolutely nothing hopeful about the way Pa Kent acts in the film. He's fearful and cynical, as you say, and that's the problem. Superman is supposed to be an aspirational hero who is the product of two worlds and the embodiment of Nature versus Nurture. His nature (powers) come from Krypton but the nurturing provided by the Kents gives him his heart and "humanity." If he were raised by another family, he would turn out differently. At no point in time do his parents encourage him to do the right thing. Their actions are suspicious, cautious, fearful, selfish and isolationist. Is it great that Clark pushes through that and makes the "right" choices after all? Sure. But in this grounded "more realistic" world, would he? Absolutely not. We are all products of our environments. He was raised to believe that no one should be trusted and that even when faced with life or death situations, the choice should always be self-preservation. The heroic actions taken by Clark fly in the face of everything he was raised to do and to believe. *This* Clark raised by *these* Kents would never do the right thing. To do so would be contrary to *everything* he has ever been taught. Think about this for a moment: he gets more positive affirmation and encouragement from a holographic A.I. in a few minutes than he does from the people who raised him. A more traditional characterization of Pa Kent fixes *so* much about this film. While Snyder may claim that he loves Superman, everything he put into this film says otherwise. I'll say it again for those in the back: Where does Superman get his heart, his belief in the inherent goodness in people, and his sense of hope for humanity? A brief conversation with a holographic A.I. of someone he has no memory of ever meeting. It's not his upbringing. And that's where this film fails so badly and why I'm disappointed to my core with how it turned out.

  • @NickPoulimenakos

Hey man, I appreciate the comment! I see what you're saying, especially with Pa Kent. I think I even say it in the video that he, out of all characters, experienced the most change when adapting from the comics. Honestly, it took me a couple of viewings to really enjoy this version of the character and understand what Snyder was trying to do. But, like you said, it won't be for everyone. Most of this film is very much an acquired taste lol. Nevertheless, I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video!

I mean, Superman has killed quite a few times in the comics, as well as twice in the Christopher Reeve series (Zod and Nuclear Man), and in Smallville (Braniac and Titan). But that's besides the point. Idk if there is a true definition for "the real Superman." The fact is, there are many different iterations of Supes, and we as the audience can pick and choose which are our favourites and which aren't. Which is why I can respect the fact that Snyder's version is absolutely not for you, while he's my go to incarnation of the man of steel. That being said, I wouldn't say he trashed a city. Most of that is on Zod. Remember, Metropolis is Supes' second fight. You can't expect him to act like the seasoned vet when he's a rookie. He learned over time, hence why he immediately brought Doomsday to space in BvS, unlike his fight with Zod.
