    flexica // I have a question! Idk if it’s a personal preference but to me I’ve always thought you aren’t supposed to cut layers into the like bottom half of your hair because you want that good chunk to be thick and the main long length of your hair? I’m asking because I want to start cutting my hair at home.

  • @flexica3237

    @flexica3237

    @@bethanygandy1083 what you can do is take a thinner subsection of hair from the very back of your head. you cut that to the overall length you want your hair to be, and you use that as a guide to cut your layers. layers are all about flow and elevation. if you use the "length" as a guide you can then elevate that hair and begin cutting the next subsections accordingly as a moving guide. making sure the length of the hair is even all around is a way to avoid chunky or uneven looking layers!

    I have spent $300+ on salon haircuts; most have been good, some were awful. But I've been locked down since March 2020. My hair, just past my shoulders, had a lot of split ends and no shape. I trimmed it myself and added layers. Honestly, I liked my own haircut better than any of the salon haircuts I've had. I don't color my hair any more, so no more salons for me. I'll happily keep it trimmed and layered using this excellent video.

    I have to tell you how much you changed my life. I haven't had a haircut for four years. I've been trying to take care of it to get it healthy, but I got diagnosed with Lupus and went from thick and healthy to thin, stringy, dry and broken split ends. So I started following how to not brush your hair when its dry, following curly hair recommendations. I still don't know if it needs protein or what, but I am going my best. I've watched so many videos and something about yours just gave me the right inspiration to go for it. So over 4 inches or more I am in love with my hair again. My curls are beautiful, and my hair is so soft. I can't thank you enough. My Facebook group for curly hair gave me over a 100 ❤s and about 75 great wonderful comments and everyone wanted to know whose video I used, so I linked your video and gave you all the props. I hope I can show you the before and after pictures. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and for helping me find my self confidence again. It’s about time I comment on this video. I’ve been using this tutorial for over a year, and my hair is seriously the best it’s ever looked. This is also saying a lot because I have curly hair (type 3A/3B for any fellow curlies out there!). I’d always struggled to grow out my hair because of stylists chopping too much off during my salon visits. With this tutorial, I can give myself modest trims every 3-4 months and my hair is finally showing length!! I feel so empowered and no longer have that getting-a-haircut anxiety. Thank you, Sadia!!

  • @JessSaade

    @JessSaade

    @@babygurl8105 I have a few modifications after doing this for a while. Strap in! 1) I actually cut it dry! It’s easier to manipulate my hair into sections when it’s dry (especially because my hair is fine and sections are too small to see the guide when cutting wet). And although it’s all combed out during a hair cut, having it dry helps me to more easily see what the shape will look like when it’s normally styled. 2) Also, because my hair is fine, I only cut layers into the top 1/3 of my head (in contrast to the 2/3 of Sadia’s technique in this video. Doing this allows me to leave more weight at the perimeter so that I can still have some layers but don’t compromise my density. I’ve always suffered with stringy ends after hairdressers cut in too many layers, and this technique counteracts that issue. 3) I also adapted the cut to create a softer U shape rather than a V shape in the back. So I do the following when trimming the bottom perimeter: after I’ve cut a guide at the nape of the neck, when my hair is parted down the middle and i comb through and take the section of hair between my fingers, I turn my head to the opposite side of the side I’m cutting before trimming away the ends. This softens the shape in the back so that it’s not so sharply tapered to a V. I’ve been very happy implementing these modifications to suit my hair texture for my last few haircuts.

Do you think it would be okay to do it as Sadia, or do you think your way would have a better result. Also could you explain your third tip again? I find it a little bit difficult to understand what happend when you turn your head with the hair you have between your fingers. But I do agree, a U shape would be better than a V shape for my curls

Trust me not every hairstylist knows what they are doing especially with long hair. A warning to people with super thick hair: use small sections when doing this. If you take too much hair it can be a bit chunky and doesn't cut as smoothly. Also prepare for this to take 1-2 hours and for your arms to hurt a lot after awhile ☺️

    I really like this tutorial but I've thick hair and not everything in here would work for me. -I think that pretty layers are much easier to achieve with thin hair because the layers lie so flat. -They just seem to merge together to give a cascading effect. With thick hair, each layer is emphasised by the volume of hair and so they don't fall as prettily. They can stick out! I have very thick hair and so these are the tips I've used so that I get a really nice cut: 1. I have to be a lot more precise and methodical than was demonstrated in this video if I want my layers to look good. If you have thick hair you need more 'guide' hair than hair-to-be-cut in any one combful. When you cut, don't push the scissors into the hair - it will cause the hair to bunch and cut unevenly. -Instead very, very gently, ease the scissors backwards as you cut, to allow the scissors to cope with the thickness of the hair and to give a cleaner line. Cut all the hair in one smooth action. 2. I've actually had really bad results with point cutting. I don't know why, but it makes my hair look really untidy and somehow my curls look messy and ratty instead of luscious! Maybe don't point cut at all and see how it looks first. Then, if the layers look very blunt, experiment with point cutting but do so sparingly in one section of hair to see what difference it makes. 3. In the tutorial she combines 3 different layering techniques in the same cut. If I were trying this I'd use the top mid section of my hair as a guide for the whole cut - I wouldn't layer the base of the hair using a different method - I wouldn't be confident that the layers would match properly. I wouldn't shape the front either until I'd checked how it looked when dry. 4. If you do want to frame the face and you've thick hair you only need to take the very front section of your hair. If you have a consistent hairline at the front you'll only need a combful of hair. My hairline is wavy and a bit wispy at the front in places so I take a generous combful to frame my face (but not all at the same time!). Honestly maybe 1/5 of the amount she takes here. Good luck. And if anyone has more tips or feedback for me please post!

    I came across your video just now. I don't know why KZread never recommended me this before I went for the pigtails haircut (I did it, but I didn't feel so satisfied with the shape, although, it turned out okayish). Your DIY is more thorough and it makes more sense because the layers are there but softer. I wanted to go to the hairdresser next month to get a layered haircut like that now that my length is below my shoulders, but I'm scared because the last time my hairdresser took too much of my length and the layers were too short, so I felt like a 1970s TV actress, disco ball and everything. Thank you for this video. I saved it to my collection, so I can revisit it when I cut it myself. Update 31/12/2022: I just followed this tutorial today, of course I was clumsy, it took me 45-50 mins to complete it, but the result is lovely. No regrets. Thank you very much!

    Hi, I just wanted to suggest watching yt-ers like Gothamista or Liah Yoo. They don't tell you what products to use, but educate you on everything there is to know about skincare (incl. "natural" skincare) so that you can make your own informed decisions. They also promote the "less is more" and "back to basics" philosophy of skincare. A good lifestyle and diet is the foundation of good skin health, sure, but if you need the extra help of products to care for your skin, you might find the information on their channels rather useful. Good luck!

    I just did this! It’s shockingly good. I was used to layers but had cut my own hair this past year (pandemic) and I didn’t do it well. This time around it looks very nice and blended. I told myself this can only get better than what I already have and it did! She explained it very well for me and honestly this is the best my hair has looked even with the past two hair stylists. Thank you for sharing this!

    Thank you so much for this video. As a mom of three little ones, sometimes it's hard to get to the hair dressers. I tried this video, and it worked like a charm, even for my medium length hair (though I did have to get creative to see as I was cutting since I couldn't hold it directly in front). My hair looks and feels great, and I saved money too. Thanks again!!

    Well this just saved me $120! Was sure I would botch this, but it is a very forgiving and flattering cut! Took me about 30 min because I took my time and watched the video 3x, and paused it as I went along. I really like the results and am going to cut my own hair from now on. Thank you 🌻

    I want to congratulate you for the intro on this video, it's inspiring to see communicators committed to their responsibility and who dare to say "if this idea makes you nervous or doesn't suit you, feel free to disregard this video all the way". I know, having millions of subs may make it "easier" for you to say something like this, but still: it is encouraging. I hope all content creators were this conscious of their task (to help instead of confusing people just for personal profit) and reach (millions of people).

    After some pretty traumatising hairdresser experiences i'd wanted to cut my own hair for ages. Now with Covid I decided to take the plunge! I just used this tutorial to cut my hair and I love it! I just did the first layering technique (bringing it to the front) all over my long hair and then the front of the temple layering and the result was subtle layers with lots of texture and volume! It's exactly how I wanted it!

    I wanted to say a big thank you for this tutorial. I've always been dubious to cut my own hair because I'm not a hairdresser and haven't had years of training to know exactly what I'm doing. But lately, I've been finding hairdressers keep using thinning methods on my already fine hair, the layering ends up fluffy and they always cut off too much, which is undoing all of my growing methods. I tried this tutorial and the results were pretty damn good! My hair feels healthier and a lot thicker than it normally does when I come back from a salon.

    I agree with flexica! I am not a professional hair stylist but i have been looking for a video which would easily layer my super long hair with a pretty consistent looking layer. My hair goes all the way down to my butt so i had A LOT of leeway if I messed up. After I was done I curled the ends.. And MY GOSH! MY hair looks freaking great!!! Wonderful tutorial! This was my first time ever doing layers in my hair and I just kept at it. Don't worry about making it perfect bc in the end it will all come together! Wish I could show you a picture! Glad I found this video!
