How I celebrate The Spring Equinox. The old Suffolk way, East Anglia

A little video sharing how I celebrate the Spring Equinox here in Suffolk, East Anglia. The old traditional way, quietly and peacefully, and why I feel so connected to it all. Thanks for watching. x

I'm a Christian so long don't really celebrate pagan festivals but l enjoy the beauty of the coming summer. Creation is a wonderful thing.

What a lovely outlook. I grew up in Suffolk, Stowmarket and Battisford, but moved to Australia 50 years ago. Watching your videos gives me a warm, at home feeling.

If the weather's good and I can escape work then I head to woodland or fields with my camera or art stuff to get images of the spring wake up, I love it. I sometimes wonder if I had been born at a much earlier date and in a more rural place, if being a May Day baby would have been considered significant or not, Still adore listening to your accent...

For me my little boy was born 21st March, and for me i've always remembered spring as his birthday. Before then i have always been keen on the sun and the spring/autumn clocks, its always felt special to me. We always put out daffodils in pots, and prepared the soil for seeding. But every year i look forward to March. As the days get brighter peoples energies increase. I always get out my yellow hoodies or bright green hoodies to help raise spirits. We are moving to Suffolk funny enough next month, really looking forward to it. I know some of the accent from my friend in Maldon who's family has not had the estuary accent dilute them. It's amazing hearing the east Anglian accent. It has an Australian twane to it. You can decently see how it influenced said folk there. I'm looking forward to learning more about the area and the accent. I really hope my children can keep the dialect going. I digress... Really looking forward to spring, my personal favourite time of year! If there is anywhere to also celebrate or nice places to go i would love to take our family there too. I hope you are well and thank you for your warm videos 😊

I do simular on Gunton cliffs in Lowestoft. It never gets boring watching the sun come up out of the water. :)

Great video Happy Equinox! Here in rural Cumbria, I get out into my garden here in Wigton. I simply mow the lawn! It’s the first mow of the year. I smell the grass. I decorate my garden pond and put up prayer flags. I have a flag pole and commence the flying of our Cumberland flag. This is my favourite time of year.

Thank you, and sending Equinox blessings your way in return. You live in a lovely part of the world, Cumbria is beautiful. I love what you do to see in the new season, small acts of seasonal acknowledgment and connecting with your garden. The prayer flags and pond decoration are a such a nice thoughtful thing to do. That and the first cut of grass, it all seems very fitting.

Aren’t they just beautiful birds. I’m glad we spotted that, I’d rather see that Woodcock than the dead pigeon we found any day! 😆

I'm an old Suffolk boy but I was born and raised in the south west of the county. I still retain my Suffolk accent but, having moved away in my twenties, many years ago now, to live and work in the midlands it's lovely to hear a Suffolk accent again. Your accent seems to me to be a north east Suffolk accent from round about Bungay, Southwold, Lowestoft, Diss way. In the south west the accent was a bit 'rounder' and more 'sing song' as the pitch of speaking goes up and down. I get annoyed by people on the telly trying to do an East Anglian accent and it just comes out as sort of Cornish 'ooh argh'. WE hear all sorts of accents on the radio and telly but very rarely East Anglian one. Recently I returned to my home town which, when I was a boy, had big London overspill housing estates built there and an influx of Londoners and now the local accent is more estuary English. As we used to say, 'If I don't see ya before, I'll see ya after!'

This sounds like the perfect way to celebrate the equinox and the return of the sun! How wonderful to be up on the hill to witness the sunrise …I don’t have a hill nearby, so I just go out into my garden and listen to the birds and enjoy the peace and quiet 😊. Hope you have a lovely restful day x

Thank you, I did intend on having a more restful day and then I ended up being quite productive! I love what you do too, taking time to connect with your garden and all the nature and wildlife around you. I’m always grateful that I have a garden here to spend time in and reconnect with the natural world around me. It’s good for the soul isn’t it 🌿🌼🌿

I've not celebrated the Spring Equinox before, but while I lived in Sweden I celebrated Mid Summer every year. The Sweds are very proud of their Viking heritage and they make a big deal of Mid Summer. It is also true that in the colder months from October to March you don't see much day light. At the Mid Summer point though the sun barely sets. You have to cut your lawn regularly because it grows so quick with all the sunlight. I used to grow some cracking tomatoes in the Swedish summer time. There are some very old midsummer customs in Sweden too. They try to discourage the picking of wild flowers in Sweden, but on Midsummer Eve, it is traditional for maidens to go and pick seven types of wild flower and in the night time they will dream of the man they will marry. Also, they Sweds erect a midsummer pole and decorate it with flowers and grass before dancing around it to folk music. Google 'Swedish Midsummer' Sara and click on images. There are some beautiful pictures of how Sweds celebrate the occasion. I lived there for 20 years and did this every summer.
