Black Shuck - Hellhound of Suffolk, East Anglia and beyond. Folklore, myths and legends of Britain

The folklore and myths surrounding the sightings of the "Black Shuck" dog are many. This video covers the ghostly hound that is seen in Suffolk, East Anglia. Though it is also seen all throughout the surroundings counties of Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, and Essex. Indeed sightings and versions of this mythical beast have been seen all over the British Isles. Dating back hundreds of years, through word of mouth and old documents, this sometimes named "Devil Dog" has been a constant source of inspiration or terror. Most notable seen here in Suffolk around Blythburgh, Leiston, and Bungay, don't let that fool you. The prowling area of this hellhound's presence is far reaching and vast. A creature that after many searches has still evaded myself and my friends as we searched the highways and byways of deepest, darkest Suffolk.

I was bought up by my maternal grandparents in Debenham in the 1950's. I now live in London and I identify so much with the video today. I so miss Suffolk. To the point of tears right now. Thank you for being there xx

In the late 1980's I was stationed in East Anglia. I first heard the story of this entity on field exercise from local British servicemen who joked about keeping an eye out for it in the woods at night. Sure enough, later that night we heard a howling, and every man went absolutely silent and stared into the fog. It was very likely a nearby farm dog, but you should have seen all of us tough, professional military guys trying to rationalize it and act like it was no big deal. Still makes me smile to think about that night. Thanks for this video. I enjoyed it very much.

What a great story, I really enjoyed reading that. I can just imagine the atmosphere, and also the cheeky Brits having a bit of a game with you guys. But Suffolk can be quite a spooky place, so it’s something a lot of us who live here both believe in and keep a respectful mind about. There’s something about a foggy night isn’t there, and how the sound carries a little different. I can imagine the scene you described. And thanks for liking my video, glad you liked it.

My tale of black shuck I was doing an emergency job last night and was coming out of town to go home at 3am, travelling speed limit, just outside of town I saw two small lights so I stopped, big mistake, it was black shuck, he launched himself at the van and despite jet washing the van a black mark remains below door. Be careful, this time of year coupled with roads being quiet mean black shuck can roam easily unchecked... He will be lurking outside the town for a reason don't forget, when he appears it's never ever good. Don't go in the woods after dark guys, don't stop and keep a bright torch to shine in his eyes, that will scare him off, he hates light, being a creature of the darkness....

Always loved the Black Shuck tales, Blythbough is such a fascinating place. We used to drive through it on visits to my Auntie in Grt Yarmouth. I think may have seen a ghost or two there :).

They’re great tales aren’t they, always filled with atmosphere and suspense. Which suits the area well! Blythburgh is a lovely place isn’t it, it feels so old there. And I quite believe you’ve seen some ghosts there, it’s the ideal place!

@@EssEvergreen When I was a little girl my dad used to drive through Blythburgh when we were visiting my aunt in Great Yarmouth. Sometimes we would stop and picnic at Toby walks (Such a tragic story attached to that place). The story of Tobias Gill would be a good one for your channel if you have heard of it. It has been years since I've been there, I live in Lowestoft but we don't have a car so I cant get out and about as I would like.

Hey Bee. I remember hearing about Old Shuck as a child. I like this presentation. I am assuming you have watched the old black and white footage of Tom Starling recounting his encounter with Old Shuck. It can be found here on KZread. The video is titled 'Old Shuck' and has been uploaded by a user called "IndianFlats". Kindly, C.

Maybe I should do a map! And as for the glasses, wouldn’t it be great if they did ward against the supposed evil eye. Don’t think I dare test it out though 😀

My great grandmother saw a black dog with fire eyes in Germany before WW2, my grandfather would pull out hot coals from the hearth the kids were fascinated, my old great grandmother was said to be a devout Catholic and would not lie as such. When I was young in the woods where I walked with a friend, a huge rottweiler black walked behind us, I wanted to run but my friend said don't, we just kept walking & it kept following about 6' away, could almost feel its breath, can still see it, now family myth and legend is fascinating
