Reacting to being called "Offensive" for having a Suffolk accent
Yep, you read that correctly, I have had comments and messages telling me that my accent and dialect is "Offensive". This is my response and reaction to those who think that sounding like the indigenous people of the county I grew up in (and still live in) is bad for Suffolk, East Anglia. You couldn't make it up :D Thanks for watching. x

Her accent is incredibly rare, so much so that most people from Suffolk do not sound like her. It's been a common trend in the past few decades to tone down accents, especially old fashioned, rural ones. People may still use words here and there, East Anglia has some great lexicon, however the thick accent is dying out. Also East Anglians, like those from the West Country, are notoriously taken the piss out of, including by their own kin!

There is a villager in the village in Norfolk I grew up with "Tom" I can not understand Tom, my Mum can not understand Tom, my Step Dad who has been a baker, and the Bakery has been handed down father to son for almost 400 years, he understands Tom. The accent you have is wonderful, reminds me of home. Also reminds me of 40 years ago the influx of weekenders who were buying houses in our village and would have their flat in London during the working week, and would arrive Friday night to stay until Monday morning and get the train back to London. Some were amazing people, some however ... well let us just say their view of the world was along the bridge of their nose. Which always seemed so strange why buy a home in Norfolk because of whatever reason "escape from the rat race" etc and then look down on the people who live there. Send'em over to Norfolk or the West Country. The change in accents across all the UK is one of the things I love about my home nation. do not know why YT put you in my feed but was glad to hear your accent, do not change for others

I found a lot of things my gramma said are old ways of speaking from back in England and Ireland. Nobody uses words like “go warsh your paddies” in the US. Some of the terms have changed meaning since the early to mid 1800s, but we kept them going here the old meaning. So I totally believe you. Write down anything you can remember. I have written down family home medical remedies from my great grammas and who knows where they originated? I also have our family mincemeat pie recipe which was not written down until my gramma did, and it uses real meat, pre Victorian. If we do not preserve this stuff, “modern” people are going to rewrite history and erase all of it.
You are a fantastic ambassador for Suffolk. Your accent is charming and wonderful! Also I love your background!

Born and lived in North Suffolk, Lowestoft, for 40 years, moved to California 36 years ago where nearly everyone thought I came from Australia ! Now living in Arizona.

I'm from East Anglia, I've been mistaken for Australian by fellow Brits! Not that I have a strong rural accent, it's more RP. Actually I'm sure "East Anglian RP" is a thing. Like George Russell, the F1 driver. First time I heard him speak I could tell he was a local.
I love learning how to identify where people come from by what accent they have when speaking in English. Voices and regional accents are beautiful and fascinating. I’m glad that you’re keeping your accept alive
Don't know how I was lucky enough to get you in my KZread feed. However, love your accent. Keep on being you! You're awesome!
Your accent is not at all offensive. In fact as an indigenous person of this land i find it a breath of fresh air to hear an English person speaking with an accent & lilt I can understand (unlike so many i hear around me these days). Youve gained a new subscriber. Im looking forward to hearing more from you. Thankyou. Im in Hertfordshire; Or "Artfordsheer" - as I would say. I love pronouncing places as the locals do. I’m glad I’ve always had Hertfordshire right (no thanks to ‘Enry ‘Iggins!)
Well, speaking as someone who has lived in the beautiful county of Suffolk for just two weeks, I can say I’ve heard varying shades of your lovely accent, from just a hint, to strong like yours, everywhere I go! I love it! How anyone can say your accent/dialogue is offensive is just beyond me. We have been made to feel very welcome here and I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can about Suffolk traditions and history. You keep going gal! 😊👍❤️
Suffolk person here. I don't have the accent but many many people I know still do including my wife and mother in law. It's a lovely gentle sound and I'm so glad it's still alive and well. Never change!
I’ve never heard a Suffolk accent and it sounds very nice! The irony is if someone hadn’t made that rude comment and you replied. I may never of heard it. I’m sure KZread recommended this because I tend to click on videos with a little bit of drama. Now I’m going to watch more of your videos!
Your accent is becoming a rare and precious thing. My ears will treasure it forever 💖
Some people have strange ideas about what it takes to "bring down the tone" of a place! 😮❤

I love your accent! I’m not from Suffolk but I have family there and when I was growing up I used to hear beautiful regional accents like yours all the time. It brings back wonderful memories!
I love your accent! It's a joy to hear our regional accents, and I hope they never die out.
I am born and bred Yorkshire, I think your accent is lovely, keep speaking.
Offense is taken nor given. If someone takes offence it is their problem, not yours. I love seeing old accents and dialects survive.

I don’t get why someone would be offended. Some people just love to be offended is really the only reason.
American here, I love hearing different accents and enjoy learning about regional dialects . You be you, you are lovely!
Your accent is majestic! I'm a self-taught English speaker, and I only learned it because I fell in love with the language, therefore all forms of accents are just as miraculous as the next. God bless you!
What I find offensive is when people try to do a Suffolk accent but sound like they're from Somerset.

I don’t know why the algorithm gifted me this video. But I’m glad it did. I find it fascinating, I’m Swedish and a dialect like yours it’s not something I hear very often.
American here. Anyone I can understand, I love to listen to. Oh, and I have family in Norfolk. 😊
It's lovely to hear a beautiful local accent still being used. Best wishes from Scotland where we still have our own accents and dialects. It does seem that you've got a nasty bout of the trolls though and need to get that flushed out.😆😆😆
I'm a good old Norfolk boy and I went over the border to Suffolk to find me a wife and haven't regretted one minute of being married to a Suffolk gal. Your accent is great and it's nice to hear. Say's a lot about people when they critcise the way you talk. I shall subscribe to hear more, so refreshing to hear english as she should be spoke.
I'm from the South in the US and we frequently get the same kind of disdain from some people in other parts of the US -- some who don't think they have an accent! You keep on rocking your wonderful Suffolk accent proudly -- it is great!
this keep showing up in my recommendations - glad I finally watched it. darling one - I am offended *BY* the idjit/s who thought you were in any shape or force "offensive". what I've learnt is that negative comments like these come from people who have an issue with themselves. I'm pleased you, rightly, stood up and proudly defended yourself - as you should, you & your loved one. you are a delightful person, I LOVE your accent - imagine if we all talked the same - thought the same, etc etc - what a BORING world that would be. YOU keep being *YOU* dear heart - 💝💖💝
Please, please never, ever change your accent. It's who you are and where you come from. It's your identity in a slowly homogenizing world.
This is the first time I've ever heard a Suffolk accent and I love it, it is glorious. I'm Welsh, but live in Bristol and you have that same melodious twang with a hint of farmer and I adore it. There is nothing offensive about it.

It’s just a joy to hear you talk, those people are being offensive themselves ❤
I love your accent my dear. Born 60 years ago at St Johns Hospital in Leeds and am far from home these many decades but I still love the wide diversity of English accents. I also love Scottish, Irish, Welsh, etc. accents. I don’t lump these places together as britain, which is a term I wasn’t very familiar with until after we emigrated when I was a teenager. I did know at that young age that the so-called European Union didn’t sound like a good idea and was proven right, as in many things. Any number of people having an opinion doesn’t make it right, nor wrong, only different. Things are only bad when people try to force their opinions on others. Hold your head high and never lose your lovely accent!!
Hello, Sarah. This is the first time I've seen your channel and have just watched your video, being drawn to it by the title when it popped up on my feed. People can be absolutely rude and disgusting. How dare they! Your accent is you..... I assume, having never seen any of your previous videos. Regional accents are precious. They're being diluted or lost through changes that have taken place over the last 50 years or more: the media(tv and film), social media, population movements to quote just a few. I will say, however, you do have a strong Suffollk accent, but I say "Hoorah!" to that. My maternal great grandparents were Suffolk folk, hailing from Pettistree. They were farm labourers who moved to East London in the late19th century. So, maybe if it hadn't been so difficult to make a living in the countryside, I may have been speaking with your accent too. 😊😊😊
YT offered your channel & it reminded me of when I was a wee lad in The USA, State of West Virginia & how my Mother worked with me & my Father to remove the West Virginia Mountain Irish accent out of us, because we were moving to California. Dad was an Eastern USA Steam Fitter & was in high demand Pipe fitting in California, for Oil Refineries & Cogeneration power plants. My mom & I lost most of the accent, but not my Dad. As I get older, I sense it all returning & I don't care. You sound great. Your accent take some deciphering at times & it's nice to hear. Have a lovely day Miss.
I'm a Midwesterner here in the United States and I'm just here to say that there's no such thing as an offensive accent. Keep doing you.
American here to echo the Australian above -- the super specific regional accents of the motherland are incredible, and while I have no idea why KZread put this on my front page, I clicked specifically to hear the accent promised. Does not disappoint, absolutely delightful. I have a hyper-specific light twang from central Texas mixed with Northeastern (American, obviously) speech because of my weird upbringing, and when I speak in my natural voice, people also think I'm faking. Keep unique accents alive! Also, I am absolutely scrutinizing the shelves behind you because this setup is so charming, I need to take notes.
Offensive!!!!!! I used to go on holiday to Ipswich every summer in the 1980’s. I am from Cumbria, I recall the wonderful accent. You speak like my cousins did growing up. My uncle Ron was of farming stock. My goodness if people came up here to Cumberland they’d by mind blown by ower crack! Much love to you and Suffolk! It’s a pure tonic to me!

@@PiousMoltar I loved it! I had great times in Felixstowe. Swimming in East Anglia was better than Cumbria; less radiation for a start. My cousins would come up here and we’d try to be the famous five crossed with swallows and Amazons! I loved the parks in Ipswich. It was a bit more urban than my home above the Solway plain but just before Lakeland. Crown pools! Great hang out. Love the area around Ipswich and out to Orford a truly enchanting place.
The lady, the accent, the fireplace and the bric-a-brac in the background.. I have to time back and watch this later. (Bloody adorable! I love learning about my own Welsh history. Would love to hear more about the different English counties. Especially from a local too. So I’ve subbed.)

@@forthfareanVery sadly true. It was still, just about around in my childhood- but only in rural parts
I have to say that the notion of anyone finding your accent offensive is utterly absurd! I am American and have always been fascinated by regional accents, which always make me want to know more about the region. There is so much history in any regional accent and I have thought it sad that, since the mid 20th century, so many regional accents have faded from use. Inevitable, I suppose, but sad all the same. Your accent is lovely and anyone who finds it objectionable should stay in whatever boring little circle they inhabit where everyone sounds the same. And now I am off to learn more about Suffolk!
This channel is about education. I don’t know why people don’t go read the channels’ descriptions before even watching a video so they can decide whether or not they want to subscribe to them.
First time I've seen your channel in my YT feed. I was intrigued by the title. I have to say I enjoyed listening to a Suffolk accent for the first time. I think it is lovely and so are you.
No actor has come anywhere close to how accurate and consistent you are. That's completely genuine, like I grew up with, although you're slowing it a bit, maybe to make it more clear but when you go at full speed oh yes that's real!
I've learnt here today that Australians talk with a suffolk accent! I thought I'd heard the Suffolk accent before but clearly i haven't

@@ZuZee02 As a 7th Generation Australian who has 3 English ancestors who were transported (and one Irish) but several other different nationalities I can assure you that the OZ accent of today is nothing like the accent of 30 years ago. Exposure to the World via the web has resulted in different states here sounding very different to each other. Listen to anyone from the central western suburbs of Sydney compared with South Australia as an example. But none of them sound remotely English ,Only the language is the same. We have lost much of the "strine" we had ,surplanted with Americanisms. Look at some old Australian Movies from thev 1950's to hear what we sounded like when I was a kid.
