This is absolutely not the case, tacticalism in Italy is historically much stronger than in other areas of Europe. In Europe the majority of teams accept the game openly, fielding offensive teams and always setting the game the same way regardless of the opponent. Instead, the majority of Italian coaches, together with a few others (such as Mou and Tuchel) adopt even drastic changes from one week to the next based on the opponent. If it is true that Atalanta destroys attacking teams, it is equally true that they sometimes have difficulty with defensive teams or very physically strong teams and in 1vs1 matches. In my opinion, in the final we saw all the inexperience of Alonso, who, apart from inserting a physical striker like Boniface, did not prepare the match in any way, a plan B. On the other hand, Gasperini surprisingly fielded an even more attacking team and crushed Bayer

Yeah that Genoa team was something else. Its weird seeing the world suddenly rate Gasperini because he beat Liverpool, again, even though he's doing exactly the same thing he was doing 15 years ago. And hasn't lost a hair from his head since, either. And when you look at the players that have moved on to bigger things, except for a few like Milito, they've all been failures. Really highlights that the success is due to his method and his training getting the best out of the players, rather than their individual qualities. Nets a tidy a profit, too.

Does not matter if he is coaching a big club or a smaller one. Important is that his squad fits to his idea. If the club is scouting just skillful, stylish players (like most big clubs) he can't succeed. His idea depends so much on phisicality and in winning 1:1 situations in offense and defence that he can not be successful if there are more then two players without an outstanding athletic. The advantage of this kind of players is, that they are difficult to beat even if they have not their best day. In addition they are always dangerous in corner kicks and freekicks. For me Gasperini is like a modern, more attractive Otto Rehagel. And Rehagel at Bayern did not work bc Bayern were always looking to have more then just 1-2 creative players in the starting 11. Because of that it will be good for him to stay at Atalanta or goes at some point to another club which has more a traditional working mentality.

Gasp had 1 chance at inter after benitez in 2011, so tbh i think it is better for him to end his carreer at atalanta and become immortal there. Although the bergamo team does not have the money to truly contend with the bigs of italy in the last few years their spending power has improved, just take scamacca as an example, which had inter interested to buy. I am glad gasp gets the recognition he deserves. He is the main reason the 3 man defensive line had a resurgence in the last decade. While both conte and inzaghi have their own interpretation of the structure and have achieved more with it, the one that made it viable in the modern meta is him. In fact in 2011 he got the inter gig because his 352 at genoa was as tough to deal with as atalanta is nowadays, sadly the results at inter were poor. And i also remember that conte was on the verge of being sacked when he tried the 352 at juve, in 2012. As for inzaghi, his preferred structure was the 433 in his early days at lazio, he fell on the 352 for balance in 2016/17. He basically is the grandpa of the 352

Alonso took a lot from him. Bayer press man to man in the final half and zonal in their half. Bayer use the wing to wing movement that Gasperini trademarked. Bayer also uses the positional interchange in attacking phase, though Grimaldo is more of a crosser, whilst Gosens (for example) was more of an incursore. Also a difference in playmaking. Alonso uses Xhaka, who builds from deep, and Gasperini relies on AMF playmakers (Ilicic, Gomez, Malinovski, Miranchuk or Koopmeiners)

What they do in UCL, almost nothing. Only Red Star has same numbers of UCL trophyes then whole League 1. Talents, yes. I don't deny that, amazing talents come from Rennes, Lille, etc. Tempo in league is also high what i respect to not get me wrong. Just say my opinion. Greetings from Serbia.

Gasp is 66 and I think that if he wins a cup, he's gonna retire. His work in Atalanta will be remembered for ages to come, a man who could pick a guy who paid 1,5 million (Gosens) and sold it for 30 for his improvements over the years. Gasperini has been the top manager in improving players of this generation.

There's not compromise, really hardwork ethic in and out of field or you are out. That is. Can big teams players sustain this man and his methods? That's the question. Ps the man is not so easy to live with. Ask Castagne,Mahele,Demiral,Papu Gomez,Barrow,Skertl,Orsolini,Kulusewsky, and Bakker now...

I don’t think it’s as clear cut. Liverpool’s best players have had medical issues, stress and struggle with inconsistency towards the end of the season these last few years. Leverkusen is a great pressing team as well. The only issue is that Gasperini is one of the most adaptable manager in world football at the moment in spite of his age, and you just don’t know what’s coming.

Amazing video mate, of a team who’s indeed very difficult to characterise as they vary so much! I think maybe something that you could have included is their “external” buildup: often Ederson and De Roon would open up wide in the flanks, with the wing backs pushing forward, which depending on the opposition’s formation could force them to either press and leave huge gaps, or suffer from their passing ability (for example with those more direct balls for players up front). This + their external CBs passing capacity makes it really hard to press Atalanta. Their buildup in the matches vs Sporting are a good example. But again, great job in analyzing Gasperini’s work this season!

Excellent analysis of Atalanta which proved so true in their spectacular Europa League Final win. It does not seem Xavi Alonso watched your video. Maybe now coaches will check with you first before they set up their game strategy. The final was a master class of Gasperini... a true veteran of the sport... and you propose a very insightful question.... Would his tactics work with one of the big well-established teams or is it only for teams that fluctuate players every season? It seems Casperini's tactics would work with a national team. Is he ready for AC Milan or Juventus? The best soccer is where coaches are free to dream without any pressure from executives. Big teams do not allow that. Bravo Atalanta and Gasperini... you amazed the world!!!

Hi guys, great video. I am italian and as somebody pointed out in the comments, Gasperini would never go to a bigger club, neither for more money nor to coach "football stars", after he meticolously spent decades to craft his own way of coaching Atalanta. My thought is that he is going to spend all of his last career's years in Bergamo. This is also the reason why Gasperini has built his own ego at Atalanta making him become one of the most rigorous managers in Italy, and if you as a football player get into a verbal discussion with him, the chance you get exonerated or sold are immense (see what happened to Papu Gomez years ago, he was one of the stars of the early rising Atalanta).

In Italy it's a common taught that the way Inzaghi, Pioli, Allegri, Spalletti and all those "top club managers" evolved their game, it's because of Gasperini's tactics. Everybody here knows this. The most evidence is the way Inter plays: Just to counter Atalanta defensive system.

If you want to play under Gasperini , you must be willing to follow every instruction to the letter . In other words be extremely disciplined. It seems exhausting from players' perspective ,but it has worked wonders . The chemistry and coordination developed by this atalanta side can not be achieved over night and without discipline. This was the reason i believe Papu Gomez fell out with Gasperini . Gomez complained of being micromanaged and not having the freedom to play the way he wanted . However with Gasperini there is no compromise . Atalanta would rather get rid of their star players than forsake their rigorous high intense pressing style which defines them as a team

Hence why in the scudetto season tonali and kessie were the starting midfield with their physicality and then Milan took advantage of tomori and kalulu speed so no others remand could really beat them in behind

Xabi Alonso perfected Anti-Zone Marking Tactics. Bundeliga is so dominated with zone marking and Bayern Munich is one of the best at it, many usually never practice man marking. But clubs like Leverkusen and Stuttgart recently figured out how to counter zone marking (attack on one side, then stay on that side, go 1:1 or play a risky pass, do not just circle arround the box) and quickly dominated eveything. Slow side changes against zone marking are often just a reset of a defence and a waste of time. But Bergamo with that consequent man marking destroyed that tactic. They were so close to the opponent players, that they won every important 1:1. Bergamos goals were just the skill of lookman and personal mistakes by Leverkusen. But the tactical impressive thing was the 0 goal danger Leverkusen could create. Luckily for them, man marking is so difficult, a zone marking team cannot just switch to it. But Alonso seriously need to develope a counter man marking strategy or this will happen again.
