Why Kieran McKenna's Ipswich Are PERFECT For The Premier League
Спорт
Ipswich Town have reached the Premier League for the first time in over two decades. What's more they've done so while building an incredible reputation for open, dynamic, attacking football.
It's invited all manner of speculation of boss Kieran McKenna's future, but Adam Clery looks at his side to assess exactly why the Premier League might be in for a rude awakening when the Tractor Boys arrive next season.

If they can somehow survive the first season back, they can build on the technical foundations and look to become the next Brentford/Palace. Being good at multiple styles of play and having a pragmatic approach would suit a mid table aspirant.

Re-signing or replacing Hutchinson is going to be quite important to how we do next season. Like Chaplin, he is a player who can *make things happen* . Actually, there's a few in the team who can do that, but Omari's form was just climbing rapidly in the last weeks of the season. His decisionmaking had improved massively since the early stages of the loan, finding the right balance between wanting to do too much by himself and utilising the players around him. The adaptability and lack of stylistic/formational rigidity I think comes from League One, where you can play all the pretty football you like, but the 10-man block has to be broken down somehow. You don't turn down any route to getting goals. McKenna's first half-season, the latter part of 2021-22, was characterised by defensive solidity, but often struggling to get the ball into the opposition net. I think he learnt from that and made chance-creation from all sources a priority. Particularly shooting from outside, or on the edge of the box.
The biggest change to Ipswich's fortunes was the ownership. The dark days of Marcus Evans sent the club into a deep pit of depression (think Roy Keane and the four Paul's) but the new owners have invested heavily in restructuring everything within the club, and were the ones who took a chance on McKenna which turned into a genius move. Everything they did paid off so well that Ipswich still have most of their league 1 side playing first team and they absolutely demolished the championship. Prem will be the real test but McKenna isn't a fluke, and doesn't seem the type to buy an entire new team before the season starts like other clubs have tried and failed at
@joefair1137

i only expect a maximum of 5-6 signings this season and exclusively ones that will fit the style of play KMK wants. We've seen what happens last manager when they just spend with no thought.

@@joefair1137 yeah, spot on, like Paul Hurst deciding to buy a bunch of league 1&2 players to compete in the championship and wondered why Ipswich were dead last. I don't worry about McKenna. I do worry about some of the squad. Particularly at fullback and CB. The premier league just leaves so little room for error on and off the ball. It'll be a big test to stay up and I'm not sure going very attacking again is a smart option. We'll see.
@rozeeboy74

Marcus Evans did his job by saving us from administration. Perhaps he should have got out 7 or 8 years before he did. He would have seen a better return on his investment (maybe) and perhaps we wouldn't have sunk into League 1. However, the Gamechanger investment group admit they were looking at "a football club in England" and had we not been in League 1, their investment may have been made in any of the other big clubs down there at the time - Sunderland, Sheffield Wednesday, Bolton, Portsmouth, Charlton, Wigan..... Dark times for sure, but one heck of a silver lining.
@guitaringjarmin
10 күн бұрын
@@rozeeboy74 that's very true. With Marcus Evans, I think he got his fingers burnt so badly by Roy Keane and his ridiculous transfer costs (that amounted to nothing on the pitch), he never wanted to invest heavily again. Can't blame him but as you say, should have just gotten out years before hand

I honestly believe Ipswich are going to surprise a few next season , McKenna is a wizard 🚜💙
Should you not also mention how good Kieran McKenna has been at developing players? I think I heard that 8 of the 11 starters for the Huddersfield match were division 1 players in the previous season. For that last game, there was a gulf in performance between Ipswich and Huddersfield. That gulf was best described by the Sky commentators as the difference between a premiership team and a division 1 team - which was effectively what was on show. Ipswich has a total team spending of about £4 million. Leicester defenders alone were valued at £80 million. Kieran McKenna is not only strategically brilliant, as your excellent video demonstrates, but he also excels at doing more with less (at least less on paper, although the whole team proved magnificent at being more than the apparent sum of their collective parts)
its crazy how eddie nketiah ALSO plays a cutback system at arsenal so its no suprise why he would be a great fit for ipswich and he would be relativlely cheap as well

Ipswich were lucky Leeds losing at home to Blackburn and Sunderland and Coventry and QPR in the run in embarrassing
This channel makes learning about tactics actually fun 😂 Keep it up guys
As an Ipswich supporter, I am expecting everyone to say we will go back down, just as people said that we would not be able to compete in the Championship last season. Not least, because that is what normally happens, but we are anything but normal. Last season we loser the fewest games, scored the most goals, had the same number of clean sheets as Leicester, 15, conceded the third fewest goals away from home, got the most points from a losing position, had the player with the most assists in the league, the player who won the ball back the most, the most different scorers, the most goals in the last 15 minutes, the most goals from substitutes, the best home record in the league, the second best away record, and our top scorer only scored 13 goals. We sold 97% of our home tickets, the 3% being away tickets not being sold, and we sold out our away allocation every game. We had the highest average league attendance in our history, and sold more than 60,000 shirts, having sold 50,000 in L1. We sold out of season tickets for next season weeks ago, and have already installed three new pitches at the training ground and a new pitch at Portman Road last summer, and will begin building world class training facilities this summer, as well as upgrading to Academy Category One Status. We have only lost 10 games over the last two seasons, got 194 points from 92 games, scored 193 goals and conceded 92, giving us a goal difference of plus 102. We also managed to be the only club int he Championship without a single red card, we had the highest running stats, we are the fittest team, and had the most shots and the most shots in target, as well as having very few penalties considering all that! So, yes, it is a big challenge, yes it is a bigger jump than from L1 to the Championship, but we are more than capable of staying up, and we will be adding four/five/six players, hopefully including Sarmiento continuing his loan and Hutchinson coming back from Chelsea. People are also overlooking g the fact that Leicester are likely to start on minus ten points, there are whispers of other clubs potentially facing financial penalties, whereas we have been praised for our transparent and strong financial position. We have not got to this point by accident, and the progress we make over the next two seasons will not be by accident either.

The gap between the PL and Championship is significantly bigger than it is between the Championship and League One. Burnley thought they were Man City in the Championship last year and they were cannon fodder in the PL. Ipswich need to significantly improve their defense next year or they will struggle to break 20 points.
Let's hope Mckenna can get them top 10

As great as the tactic breakdowns are, the real reason we sub and watch videos about teams we don't even care about is that beautiful voice and self-deprecation

As a Geordie (and Newcastle supporter) who lived in Ipswich for years, I had the pleasure (not so much pleasure) of going to loads of Town games while I was there as I couldn't get home for Newcastle games; the football was always great first half, terrible second and wins were few and far between, so I am really happy they are back in the Premier League, playing great football and hopefully they stay there! Good luck and looking forward to the Bobby Robson derby again.
love Adam, the boy is football analysis and he also knows wrestling too. great presenting too.
It's funny that the world now sees Omari this way. Cos when he showed up at Ipswich he was terrible. He couldn't stay onside to save his life, would lose the ball in 1-1s constantly, and could barely pass let alone get a shot on target. The incredible player he has become is nothing short of miraculous and a true testament to the unbelievable quality of McKenna as a coach and manager. The wonders he has worked with this squad will never be replicated.

The old Kevin Keegan philosophy of if they score 4 we score 5
This sounds exactly like how Man Utd played with McKenna as a coach there. He was the coach in the only time the club has managed back to back top 4 finishes, nice to see everyone finally giving him his flowers
The way you described Ipswich both tactically and statistically makes them sound a little bit like Di Zerbi’s Brighton. But it will be fun to see how far McKenna’s tactics can go next season. Well done to McKenna and Tuanzebe btw. Both are ex United lads 👏🏾
One of the amazing stats is that our top goal scorers were both on 13 and none of the two are the main striker, you can see why from your explanation.
Absolutely superb video. A seasoned season ticket holder at ITFC and I learnt
Fantastic season for Ipswich since I decided to follow them from a distance as a Yorkshire schoolboy in 1971 Lovely club and given the size of the town a very proud history of punching above their weight The defence needs improvement but with that proviso and keeping the brilliant Keiron Mc Kenna a decent mid table position is well within reach The top five or six clubs in the Premier are obviously first rate but the remainder are beatable
Really enjoyed understanding why the Tractor Boys have been so good to watch this season
We'll take survival, much as this season we'd have taken consolidation. There will be changes, new faces coming in, but it will be players that KMc and Ashton will have been looking at for the last six months. We won't do a Forest and change the whole squad. It's a huge gap, hope we can bridge it.
I love he comment, "they look like a mid table premier side, they should be fine". Please keep saying things like that :)
Wow, I’m a ST holder at Portman road and just learnt a lot - cheers!
Great summary overall, however one key play which we often have is when Chaplin comes into the inside-right channel around the halfway line and sweeps it round the corner behind the full back for Burns to run on to.
I love this adam guy tbh
Great work bro
Fantastic analysis. As a Town fan will be happy to finish 17th but I didn't think we'd finish 2nd in the Championship either so who knows what will happen! COYB
I heard someone describe their style a "conscious possession based system" they don't just want possession and hold on to the ball and end up doing nothing with it, you usually find the more you hold on to the ball after a certain point the other team becomes tighter and you need to recycle the ball to try and draw them out of position. Ipswich want the ball when it suits them, and will try and work in it into a goal scoring position and they wont rush if they don't have, but they also refuse to camp outside of the oppositions box passing the ball around waiting for an opportunity. Ipswich would much rather get the shot away give the other team possession back and go at it again.
Recently Ancelotti made similar points about how Real does not have a defined playstyle or identity but responds pragmatically to the situations in ways that make the most of their players skills. And if it’s good enough for Don Carlo, well then….
There is something very special about this Ipswich team, with the correct signings in the summer i believe they will surprise many
Really hoping Adam is taking better care of his bed linens these days.

Really good analysis. Ipswich will suprise a few people next year. Probably won’t churn the players like Forest. I hope they might recruit a couple of PL experienced defenders, although that seems harsh on the current players. I feel we are more likely to be a Brentford than a Burnley
No. That was the best outro you've ever done.
I would be interested to know how the stats break down across the season. George Hirst getting injured meant needing to bring in Moore, which changed the style of play in January to more long ball.
Excellent ...very interesting and entertaining 👍🏻
Brilliant stuff 👍🏻
Ipswich were a midtable club in terms of budget last year. Most of their starting 11 comes from players with 0 Pl experience, who came as either loan signings from top PL clubs or very shrewd deals from championship, league 1/2 clubs. Mckenna is a great coach and hes took his players to a level no one thought possible and achieved something magnificent, but they need some serious recruitment to survive, never mind thrive. lets hold before saying theyre perfect. Though i truly hope they stay up and we get to see the players there and mckenna become top class. especially excited to see how mckenna develops his style and coaching over the next few years.

The system is tailor made for Leif and there’s no one else you’d want on the end of a cutback than Chappers. Will be sad to see some of these players not play in the Prem but so excited for MckennaBall to shock a few more next season. Kieran Mckenna is a genius.
The intro phrase : "hello my little vegetables" 😅😂
I can remember having quite a few Ipswich players in the Premier League sticker book
Great vid thank you
You should of added With the way McKenna has inproved the players especially Hutchinson and Leif i genuinely feel any top club in europe will be begging us to take there young players on loan, If we spend wisely and use the loan market like we have last year we should be safe from the drop, we need to keep level headed in the market and not go stupid, but i do feel with the board and McKenna we are in safe hands there.
Did not fool me . I knew you would say all three... Because I knew he's on the top
Excellent video!
as a Chelsea fan, I hope Hutchinson goes back out on loan to Ipswich next season and he's given the chance to flourish for another year by getting more game time than he'd get in a Chelsea shirt
A bit harsh on Nathan Broadhead, he’s started in that left hand side role more than Hutchinson and is joint top scorer with Chaplin. Hutchinson is fantastic but only started 20 games (actually played a part in 45games, more than any other outfield player), he also started on right and at number 10 which shows his versatility.
I hope they csn continue like this in the Prem but I worry about them losing their loan players and being a bit weak in defence
The issue is the quality of player and specifically defender is much better in the prem. The big thing is in those clips the Champ teams are not pressing the ball but players. More teams in the prem press the ball and counter press the attacking team. Certainly interesting in that Ipswich look to have a balanced set of tactics which will help them greatly...the old plan A and plan B. Or just good old situational variety depending on the specifics of the match. You do need a heck of a midfielder/s though to make that work. Which I think is increasingly important in the Prem. Roy Ball/Dyche ball etc doesn't work so well anymore.
omari is a baller and a half
I have a feeling they will do well they are tenacious and dig in when need to but they play decent football
I see Adam I click

Moving the big CF against the RB is what Parkinson did with Hanson against Chelsea to devastating effect
Excellent video
Big question is though, when they aren’t clinical on the counter in the prem, have they got it in them to not concede on the counter they then expose themselves to?
This was a fucking great video
I guess rather than having a definitive play style, it’s more just adapting and playing to certain team’s weaknesses.

This analysis is all relative. They're playing championship teams. I watched them against Huddersfield and I thought it was slow and predictable. Huddersfield defense was disorganised and slow to react. Watching an Ipswich goal highlights also showed slow disorganised defenses. The Premier League is several levels above not just one. I'm a Suffolk boy, even spent a season long trial there when I was 15, so I'd like them to do well, but I can't see it without genuine PL recruitment.
I remember similar stuff being said about Burnley.....yeah. I'm sure people will rage-respond with a million reasons why they're different, but in general championship teams cycle in and out.
@aidan2453

This is so much of a bigger challenge than what Burnley faced coming up last year. Also Ipswich's style of play is so much more interesting than Burnley's was, more of an unknown but as always it'll be interesting to see how they adapt and cope with premier league football. Sheffield United came up and shocked everyone a few years ago, they weren't the first to do so and they won't be the last, I hope. They also, probably, won't bring in 15 players and replace half or more of the starting 11.
Their team is absolutely miles away from competing in the Prem. They need to improve virtually every position if they want a proper squad.
Presence on Mastodon, pls
I hope do well in the Premier League !!!
