Bayern didn't remember that Tuchel actually resigned from PSG (rather than being sacked) because he couldn't take the internal politics any more. As you pointed out Alfie, he is a lot of things but a diplomat he is not. It worked at Chelsea because there weren't the many layers of management and he was able to more or less call the shots. Until, of course, he inevitably pissed off the new owners and they binned him.

Well as stated in the video, Bayern is just a special breed with a lot of internal and external bullshit and politics that need to be micromanaged. It's not only about winning trophies, it's about how you win them and how you please the senior squad players and all the different board members. Nagelsmann was first in the Bundesliga, but he lost it the game before he was sacked, and the bosses thought he wasn't winning convincingly enough. Tuchel was available at the time and they took the chance. Obviously, that now both then leaders Kahn and Brazzo and Tuchel have been sacked since as well is hilarious. The players and leaders were convinced that Carlo Ancelotti, of all people, was tactically inadebt. Alonso's rejection was the most telling. He actually knows the club from the inside so he'll be all too aware of the insane player power held by members of the squad, particularly Neuer and Muller who s*** the bed whenever they don't like the chosen manager (Ancelotti, Kovac). Those same two players wanted Tuchel to stay after he oversaw a catastrophic season!

Bayern take risks with coaches. They've fired Ancelotti after one loss to PSG in Paris. There were not going to give chances, you either succeed, or you are out. It was successful, but now there are out of choices. Also, who in their right mind would coach Bayern after they sacked Ancelotti. And sure, he doesn't even care about tactics, he told (while in Bayern) one journalist, that they are making football too complicated. But his approach works, Ancelotti is one of the most successful coaches of all times.

Bayern is a bit like Real. You cant really build anything there. You get all the blame if you lose and not much credit if you win. There is nowhere to really go after those places and they really do little to enhance your legacy as a coach. In Madrid especially you seldom see guys go on to have amazing managerial careers after they leave. Managers don't really leave on the best of terms and come out worse than when they went in. Me personally I'd much rather take the reigns at an Arsenal or a Liverpool. There you get more control, you can build your own team and when you win something it will be much more appreciated. Save the Bayern and Real jobs for you last hurrah

@@ry_jayy There's no comparison, City are just about to possibly get four titles in a row, and it's been a TIGHT battle, with the knowledge that one tiny slip would end it, it was the same case for 21-22, unbelievably fine margins. Since Guardiola's arrival, they've lost two titles, and of their potential 6 title wins under him, this season would be the third time where it was potentially won by a single point Bayern have had two very narrow races, but they would only divvie up parts of a 12-title streak where otherwise they would walk the title by a minimum of ten points, The Bundesliga title has been by a MASSIVE distance the most boring title race in Europe for over a decade, thank god that streak is finally over.

In that same period Barca have finished outside the Top 2 24 times and outside the Top 3 13 times. La Liga may have two huge teams but that makes the league as a whole all the worse because for anyone else to win BOTH those teams must have what constitutes to them a bad season! And what constitutes to a bad season for Real or Barcelona is 3rd place, heck 2nd is rarely good enough for Real! - For context Bayern didn't even make it to the Bundesliga till 1965 and have finished outside the Top 3 11 times since. Their dominance of the last 29 years where they only finished outside the Top 3 once {4th in 2007} does not compare with the dual dominance of Real and Barca in La Liga! - For additional context Liverpool were relegated in 53 and spent the next 8 seasons in the second division {now The Championship}. Since returning to the Top Flight in 62 Liverpool have finished outside the Top 3 26 times! {it's 34 with those 8 seasons in the second tier}. Manchester United have finished outside the Top 3 {including a relegation in 74 - They went straight back up the next season} 33 times since 1953!

Great video as always just one small addendum to the Ralf Rangnick story. He was allegedly very, very close to signing for Bayern. He was offered a salary that was reportedly at least four times as high as what the Austrian federation is able to pay him currently. There were reports that he had gained all of the concecions he had asked for when negotiating with the Bayern higher ups, which would have included giving him an unprecedented amount of power for any Bayern München coach. Basically, all the "hard" factors were looking like they could convince Ralf Rangnick to leave Austria. BUT this is where the ÖFB played the few cards theyhad just right. They kept on reiterating how much he and his work are appreciated here. They spoke to him and said things like "oh btw if there is anything we can do to enable you to work better/more comfortably, let us know and we will do it". And lastly, several players reportedly called Ralf Rangnick directly and said how much they enjoyed playing under him in our national team and how happy they'd be if he stayed. Basically, they all behaved essentially anti-Austrian. Us Austrians are normally grumpy and sarcastic and have a short fuse, especially with Germans (Piefke as we call them). For Ralf Rangnick we threw all of this overboard and showed the genuine appreciation and dare I even say love we have for him and his work. I'm so glad that it worked and I'm so looking forward to the Euros and hopefully to finally seeing Austria competing in a World Cup again in 2026. Also, small nitpick about the double pivot: As it currently stands, Aleksandar Pavlovic works very well in the role as a real holding six as does Konrad Laimer, who, especially in the Champions League games, showed brilliant defensive performances and has shown that he can do much more than just playing as a classical box to box 8. Goretzka, despite recently finding his form again, is the clear loser in this situation and Kimmich has (FINALLY) been put back as right back where he belongs. Playing Kimmich in the center is not sustainable, because all he does is slow the game down to a crawl and then chip balls into the box.

Great analysis and agree with all. Interesting about why Rangnick turned Bayern down from the Austrian perspective. Of all names mentioned he would have been my clear favorite coming in and turning things around properly. But for him it's probably for the best at this time. Maybe once KHR and Hoeness finally steps back there is freedom for Rangnick or someone similar to come in and do their thing.

Rumour has it that even Big Sam turned the job down, which is something he's never done before. He even done a bit of guttering for me once after he lost his job at Newcastle. Top bloke👍

I don’t think it’s fair to characterise Liverpool’s managerial search as troublesome and without professionalism or efficiency, they interviewed people who showed up well in the data and concluded Slot was the best candidate, pretty unremarkable really. It was everyone else outside the club who made a big fan fair of it.

Its not that no one wants to manage the club, its that there are no good coaches available right now. Yes, they screwed it up with Tuchel. This shows that there should be a switch in approach with coaches in general, not only with Bayern. Coaches are sacked way too quick nowadays while the leadership is often full of incompetency.

Good video. Minor quibble with the comparison between Bayern and Liverpool. Liverpool’s vacancy was not of their own making; whilst Liverpool’s number one choice was obvious, when Xabi didn’t come Liverpool simply made their plans discreetly. All the noise was from without, either with press speculation or managers (directly or indirectly) making their willingness to take the job public. Ultimately, we all have a pretty good idea of which managers were approached by Bayern and rejected them; Liverpool made a plan and executed it.

Not to mention that Liverpool identified Arne Slot as a serious contender for Klopp's successor very early on in the recruitment process, even before Xabi Alonso ruled himself out. It was basically almost a two-horse race between Slot and Alonso, Alonso dropping out (although coming as a huge blow to Liverpool fans as he was their ideal candidate) actually did Michael Edwards a favour as it allowed them to go all in on Slot. Ruben Amorim was considered but rejected by Liverpool and Liverpool were actually annoyed with the rumours that Amorim was selected. Liverpool had a good idea of who they wanted and followed the data, whether that data will translate into results is another matter and we shall see what happens. Liverpool's process was a lot smoother than Bayern's.

As a Bayern supporter, this last year, back to the firing of Nagelsmann, has been embarrassing.

Simple answer: because as a coach at fcb, you literally have no power whatsoever. Yet everybody above you expects from you to win. If you try to get involved into scouting as coach, you're out. You speak up against uli or khr, you're out, you lose the team, you're instantly out ... who wants to enslave themselves if you can have it like Xabi literally managing the club together without any strict hierachy

Alonso doesnt want to do it because he built a team and he wants to see that team make it. He is not Mr Pep who people consider goat. Great goat apent millions and always takes the best club. Bayern Munich's problem can easily be chalked up to very few reasons. 1. The board, especially Uli Hoeneß, who cannot keep his mouth shut in public shortly before the important Champions League game and badmouths the current coach. @@mauddib1761 So I've never heard that he wouldn't do a coaching job in Germany and I don't believe it either. However, he would be stupid to start as a coach at Bayern. Not because it's not a world-class club, but what's going on in the club's boardroom at the moment, especially with what Uli Hoeneß has done in public and when you consider that Thomas Tuchel would have been willing to continue in the job, but for longer than just another season and that was the main reason why the negotiations with Thomas Tuchel also failed, then that reflects very badly on the club. If Jürgen Klopp were to sign there, he would be more than just tired of life. As I said, the problem at Bayern is the top management and Uli Hoeneß in particular. Anyone who goes there as a new coach must be able to clean up the club and the board and break up the power relations on the board, otherwise they'll be out by the end of next season at the latest, and that's exactly the reason why everyone has rejected him sooner or later. Neither Thomas Tuchel nor Max Eberl nor Christoph Freund can do anything about it. It's more to do with the board members or chairmen who are higher up and with what is publicised from within the ranks of Bayern itself. So no, I don't think Jürgen Klopp will go to Bayern, rather to another German club.

Bayern have been poorly run for years, interfering with transfer policy etc. Should have lost the Bundesliga last year but the rest of the league was still so gaslit that they fumbled it. It's taken an outsider in Alonso, a winner, to change the loser mindset of one of the other 17 clubs. Hopefully this marks a renaissance in club and international German football because both have been killed by the past decade of faux morality.

My only critique is that Alfie overlooks the fact that being able to speak german is mandatory for the job at Bayern which is why I believe that de Zerbi and Emery were never truly considered for the job by the Bayern board. Bayern would only make an exception for someone of the caliber of a Guardiola Ancelotti or Zidane but even then with the expectation that they would be able to speak german at a basic level by august.

Much of what you say used to be right before Champions League money made the title race null and void and Bayern winning more often than not with ten points or more for the last decade. So it's more accurate to say the title race has been terribly boring for a decade, I'll give you that. Yes, the last season was different, as was this one, of course, but the years before were a drag - the battle for relegation can only keep interest in a league for so long if there's no battle at the top. And I'm far too careful to hope for an ongoing change as money talks and the usual way of operations in the Bundesliga - since the 80s - is Bayern buying every key player they can get from the rising clubs like Leverkusen of Stuttgart. Like in the past Del Haye, Labbadia, Elber, Lucio, Klose, Gomez, Lewandowski, Götze, Upamecano... You name them. It's going to happen again. So as for competition and tradition, until 2022 the second Bundesliga was more exciting to follow. Would be great if things changed in the Bundesliga and there was more Mainz and Bremen and battle for the title but for reasons mentioned I doubt it.

As a German Bayern supporter I can say that this was (as ever) a well researched and balanced video about the situation. It could‘ve gone a bit more in depth into the complicated leadership structure and some of the senior figures like Höneß making silly comments about Tuchel in the media - but I agree with 99% of what has been said. I would’ve liked to see Tuchel stay at the club - but the board seems to continue its strategy of cutting cost and then blaming the manager…

Hoeness is a problem, sure, but many clubs are finding difficulties with top players throwing their weight around. It becomes difficult when there is so much money around. Club management doesn’t want to upset their expensive assets, and coaches are caught in brutal squeeze plays in several leagues.

Because their last manager who was in charge for 3 years was Pep Guardiola. About 8 years ago. Regarding Ralf Rangnick: the main reason in my opinion is that Rangnick usually only takes jobs where he has complete freedom regarding the signings, the playing philosophy and so on. Bayern has a "VP of sports" and and a sporting director. So he would have been "just" the manager. He was just playing mind games to strengthen his position in the Austrian football federation.

I don't think he was only playing mind games. Allegedly Rangnick had had all of his demands approved by FC Bayern and was seriously contemplating the move, which is not surprising given that he reportedly was offered a salary that was four times higher than what the Austrian federations is able to currently pay him. I truly believe, that what ended up convincing Ralf rangick to stay in Austria is how deeply he is valued and appreciated, dare I even say loved here. Some players have come forward and said that they had called Rangnick during the time of his negotiations with Bayern and told him that they'd like to continue working with him. Maybe I'm being a bit overly romantic but I think that level of appreciation convinced Rangnick to stay in the end.

They'd also obivously need to take Rangnick's inout very seriously. Let's just say this, anywhere a group of old retired men who spend their time golfing and attend an occasional meeting are in charge, things usually become like this. Not just football.

You got it wrong about Liverpool's pursuit for Klopp's successor. It wasn't really troublesome at all for Liverpool. Klopp chose to leave on his own accord and told the club that he planned to leave in November (January was the public announcement), so Liverpool had a head start to find his replacement. They did months of research and scouting to find the ideal candidate and Arne Slot was actually identified as a serious contender fairly early on in the process, along with Xabi Alonso and Ruben Amorim. Slot wasn't their 4th, 5th or 6th choice as is the case with Bayern in their pursuit, Slot was a serious frontrunner for Liverpool fairly early on. Out of all of the contenders, Xabi Alonso was the only one that turned Liverpool down, the rest were turned down by Liverpool themselves. Amorim was rejected by Liverpool over Amorim's instance on sticking to a back 3 rather than adapt to Liverpool's preferred back 4 and a different long-term vision to what Liverpool wanted. Even if Xabi Alonso had been up for it, he would not have been given it on a silver plate, it would have been a close race between him and Slot. That's how serious of a contender Arne Slot was for Liverpool. With Amorim, Liverpool were even annoyed when Portuguese media started rumours that Amorim had agreed to a deal when he hadn't and Liverpool were angry as they feared it would have put Slot or other candidates off. Amorim didn't fit what Liverpool wanted so he was not considered. Whether Liverpool have got it right with Arne Slot and if the data translates to results, we will find out by the end of the next season (Slot may be a success or not). But Liverpool's pursuit for a new manager was far from chaotic, Liverpool knew what they doing and had a clear plan and a clear back-up plan. That is not the case for Bayern Munich at all, Tuchel's departure was their own making and their toxic culture has been exposed and this has only put managers off from becoming manager.

Sacking Nagelsmann was a callous move from Munich. Of course as a Dortmund and Stuttgart fan this should have been a good news but man Munich is a mess this season. In a way I don't want them to completely disintegrate, though, that would be horrific for German football.

Sacking Nagelsmann and still keeping (and paying) the senior players like Muller, Neuer, and Choupo-Moting who should have been sold SEASONS BACK btw, are the two biggest mistakes the Bayern management has ever made. And I love that this is now hitting them and their fans like a planet sized brick.

As a Bayern fan, this has been a long time coming. Saying that it started with the sacking of Nagelsmann isn't correct. It started with the appointment of Pep Guardiola. Pep eroded much of the club culture and even underminded the club in the transfer market, when City made it clear they wanted him. Höneß and Rüminegge are obsessed with Pep, getting him really boosted their egos. In came the idea of trying to buy flashy expensice overrated premier league signings, and out was the longterm planning, and the smart business that got them to where they are. (Im not talking about Harry Kane btw). Bayern are the best run club in the world, with 50+1 they are a people's club, with a bond closer to their supporters than no English club could ever be. It's why i became a fan. All good things come to an end, but if 2-3 years of a clearout is needed, its worth it. Höneß is old and senial, directing from the lakehouse. It wont get better until he's finally actually retired. In the end, Bayern at their worst are better than Arsenal at their best.

The 2013 and 2020 treble winning Bayern seems to be quintessential Bayern, fast and direct. Guardiola did change the footballing direction in that respect (I'm not so sure about the club). I'm not as optimistic about Bayern's future. I think they're going through a gradual decline. I don't think they'll become Man Utd, but they won't be their 2013 or 2020 selves either for some time. You genuinely don't know what you're talking about when it comes to Liverpool. Alonso was never in contention for manger, contrary to National press reports, it was long known by local press that Alonso had already made it clear he wasn't going to move, neither was De Zerbi ever a serious target, again that was press talk. They did pursue Ruben Amorim but his club suddenly doubled the compensation so Liverpool rightly walked away. It was only then they went after Slot who was on the list of targets drawn up. As for Bayern, they maybe successful in the Mickey Mousesliga but they wouldn't finish in the top 4 in the EPL because they're unused to real competition.

Alosno was considered but Liverpool had prepared for the event of him not going. Slot was actually already a serious contender by the time Alonso announced that he staying at Leverkusen, Liverpool were just keeping their options open. As for Ruben Amorim, the money and compensation was not the deciding factor, it was differences in tactics and long-term vision for the club that resulted in Liverpool turning him down. Amorim swears by his use of a back three formation, whereas Liverpool's squad and the youth system are built around a back four formation and Ruben Amorim was unwilling to change from that and such a change would require a lot of retraining of the entire Liverpool team and they function. Liverpool deemed that was too big of a risk and so turned him down.

I can tell you, Bayern München's struggles are the icing on the delicious cake this season has been so far. And I know, a defeated Bayerrn is a dangerous Bayern, so I'm sure they'll come back at us with a vengeance. But the ridiculousness of the current situation is totally worth it. Yep, it's Schadenfreude.
