Yup, tbh at the start of the season making 8th would still have been a decent outcome. I think it just feels worse currently as we're just in a bad run of form, but as a whole it's been a good first season. And also were still above; Newcastle, Man u and Chelsea.

Attractive football? Tottenham played like 6-8 games this season where they played attractive, attacking football. Nothing attractive in conceding 60 goals and the season is not even over yet.

What's not quite as attractive is that Spurs' frantic press and pace of football is more than they themselves are consistently able to control - leading to matches like vs Arsenal, where they manage to stop Arsenal from their usual levels of attractive fluid play, yet fail to play attractively themselves. Leading to scrappy matches. Again though, a bit of a player issue that can be ironed out with different players.

@@QlickyThis is a poor take. Last season, Spurs conceded 63 goals (highest in the top 10) whilst playing horrendously dull football. Under Ange, they’ve changed style and - with 3 games to go - they’ve scored almost the same amount (70 vs 69) So that IS clearly a more attacking team. As for the “attractiveness” - that part is entirely subjective. But anecdotally, what you hear from Spurs fan is that they enjoy watching their team again as opposed to life under Jose and Conte. Theres no bus being parked by Ange and that demonstrates a positive mentality. By the way, I’m not a Spurs fan. I simply follow football and can see the major change at that football club.

@@RansomMemoryAccessI don’t agree. Did you see that game? For large parts I thought Tottenham dominated and it was really only through their own unforced errors that Arsenal built such a lead. That is very different from the usual Arsenal performances which rely on dominating possession and suffocating opposition. In the 2nd half, I saw Tottenham move up a couple of gears and to be honest, Arsenal couldn’t live with them.

He needs to figure out how to punish opponents who don't mark his wingers. He needs a Saka, a Mitoma, a Trossard, or a Jesus. Note that three of them are Gunners. He could possibly snag Smith-Rowe or Sterling, but I don't think either would be enough. Given his relationship with the J League, I wouldn't be surprised if he brought in Miyaichi Ryo. He may be 31 years old but he's better than Richarlison or Antony.

Good analysis, as a Spurs fan this video confirms what I thought, the opposition don't rate our wingers and crowd out the middle where we end up going back because we struggle to play through, this is a personnel issue, a couple of wingers who are 1v1 specialists will completely change this team.

@@Qlicky Not just the wingers, the striker needs to hold onto the ball. We basically give the ball away to much because we can't penetrate, forwards who are able to use the ball much better will help with this.

Very simple think for Ange haters - imagine someone like Nico Williams on the wing, the opposition cant let him be on the wing like they can with Werner, Kulu or Son. And once again they will be more streched and just coldnt stay as compact...

Problem youve got is you need to get the ball to him, you could have messi out there but if you play backwards under pressure like Adams example it doesnt matter who you have there. Ange is class btw, just dont see his live by the sword and die by the sword of attack attack attack will ever win owt. Im a toon fan and he reminds me of Keegan in attitude and style of play.

Teams defend narrow against us and if we have some winger of quality, they will be Forced to get out and engage, thus opening the space... it's literally in the vid tbh it's better you watch them again than reading comments

the truth is always somewhere in-between. has Ange been found out and should therefore be sacked? no. is there a guarantee that Spurs will find better players for this system and therefore get to the level of the top 3? also no. but that's ok. that's football. but unlike the last two permanent managers, who either threw their toys out of their pram or their players under a bus, Ange is the one who recognises that Spurs under ENIC won't go out and buy the very best (even if they could attract them in the first place) and is more than ok with it. and if Spurs are ever going to challenge for titles again, they will need to have that kind of character at the top.

There are huge problems with the wingers not being able to dribble past their man (Solomon injured almost entire season, Perisic was slower, but two footed and so could go either way - also injured). Strikers bad at holding up the ball.. Midfield seemingly being all square pegs in round holes.

I don't know why but Postecoglou reminds me of Bielsa, a stubborn one way all intensive/offensive manager that everyone loves and gives a breath of fresh air at the beggining but once the players start to get tired and other teams learn how to counter him it's the end of the way cause ironically, no matter what the results, they won't change the offensive tactic that made them be loved at the beginning... It's like an idealist made a football manager, lol.

Yeah if that is really the case how it will continue, then I'm afraid Postecoglou won't be there long. Never pay attention to what the fans are saying but always watch what they actually do. They will inevitably stab the manager in the back because for all the "praise" he gets for sticking to his guns, results are results. Once results continue to slide downward more and more, the praise will be inverted into vitriol. Football fans never fail in being fickle towards anyone, even their own club.

Perfectly said! Couldn’t tell the amount of times Kulu and Johnson got the ball on the wing in acres of space and just didn’t have the quality to do anything. Having a Nico Williams-esque player would cause much more havoc. Ball retention is key to this tactic and most of our players excel in giving it away haha.

The solution is so simple: 1v1 specialist wingers! If you can't pass through a narrow defence then you need to keep the ball, probe for a while and eventually get it to the wide man with space to carry it towards goal. The dribble up the byline and pull back for Son is potentially so deadly. We just don't have that profile out wide yet. Our wingers always look for the same routes to goal, and if that's not on they will too often pass backwards, putting us on the back foot from great positions, leading to turnovers and then counter attacks when we should be creating chances and building pressure. Proper wingers completely unlock this team. We're already great at beating a press, all of a sudden the compct back 4 is less secure, and if you drop into a back 5 you basically surrender possession and space in the midfield so we can reslly build pressure. Obviously stressed about losing games, but honstly, I'm seeing the big picture. Scored a lot of goals, overwhelmed a lot of teams, won more than half our games post-Kane exit, and managing serious issues of player availability all season. Excited for the future!

Kulusevski is left footed but I don't think he's ever played on the left. Probably won't take much to sort things out & the last 4 fixtures were tricky but Spurs weren't really competitive in those games at all.

​@@jimmynich4791 yeah I hear you. I wasn't too annoyed with the performance against Arsenal. 3-0 was crazy against the run of play and we nearly pulled it back. The other three games were piss poor. With Kulu, I think he's just chronically predictable and all the other wingers have similar issues. If you show him to his right foot in the final third he will turn around and pass backwards 99% of the time. Other wingers have different limits in there game with a similar outcome if you stop them. I mean Kulu picked up the ball with loads of space against Liverpool plenty of times and made no push to goal at all. Total contrast to the likes of Salah or Diaz who will constantly apply pressure and ask questions. For me we need to get Eze from Palace and start him wide. Maybe try triggering Nico Williams release clause. Something like that. More unpredictability means more movement off the ball, because anyone can expect a pass. Right now it's all very static until we're absolutely desperate for goals.

I think they need a quality holding midfielder, a more prolific striker & some good squad players, the first 11 isn't too bad but one or two injuries and it all falls to pieces, missing Udogie immensely now. Ref was poor vs Arsenal as well & I think there is an element of going through the motions with the players not expecting to qualify for the champion's league with the fixtures that were left I think they kind of think there's not much left to play for.

​@@jimmynich4791 Totally agree on the CDM. We don't really have that guy that can dominate the midfield off the ball. That would send us up levels along with wingers. I would also love Olise and Eze, problem solved then, but I don't think it's realistic tbh. Olise seems pretty destined to go to a Liverpool or City to be honest. Eze feels a bit more realistic and Nico Williams has a nice release clause so Ange can at least get him on the phone. I do think that if we sort out the wingers you would see Son and Richarlison go absolutely mad for goals as the CF options. I know people don't like Son there, but he has been outstanding at finishing chances that fall to him. It's just the service has been so patchy. The issue is in this video. Teams get compact and just kill the space for Son, then the wingers rarely create space by winning 1v1s so any CF would be locked up. We've been relying on that Johnson-Werner low cross/back post run for so long now, which is fine to find the space on the far side, but if we can rinse a fullback 1v1 and cutback for Son/Maddison/etc as well... goals galore and way more control of games!

@jacklane3679 Yeah & I think when teams do drop deep Spurs would be looking for the attacking midfielder to do something, maybe shoot from range or find a killer pass. Maddison was doing it at the start of the season but he's maybe a bit tired now. Donley looks to have a sweet left foot & will be great when he's ready for more first team football. Williams is an Ange type of player with good attitude who always put a shift in & he can certainly take players on. I'd like to see more youngsters getting chances, I think it's a better option than shoe horning players out of position like Royal at left back. Seems Spurs always take their time bringing youngsters through, theyve got the best under 21 team in the country at the moment so hopefully one or two are ready for some first team minutes soon, thats the great thing about the europa league that there's more games youngsters can get a chance in.

I agree completely as a spurs fan with your summary. Too many fans are reactionary. Obviously it’s our first time losing 4 on the bounce since 2002. But besides the Newcastle one, we were expected to lose all of them (not that that fully excuses the performance but still 3 good teams) give him a couple seasons and if we’re still talking about the same problems, then it’s time to worry. Other than our set piece naivety, the way we’ve played this season has made me so excited to be a spurs fan again.

Also, Spurs have had one of the toughest end-of-season run-ins. Getting that at the end, when everyone is potentially more worn out, definitely makes it more difficult. Although, seeing Spurs have played so fewer games this season, I kind of hoped they would nick a couple of those games. I too have really enjoyed this exciting new version of Spurs, but unfortunately the first couple of months, when they were playing hair-raising attacking football, seems a long, long time ago now. They were very unpredictable, and now they're not.

just trusting the process really, hes had a good first season even if its ended badly, 5th with a patchy squad and literally no depth is an amazing achievement and nothing to scoff at, its turned out well for Arsenal and many other clubs with new managers that had much worse first seasons so I recon that this style of play will probably continue to work and I hope Spurs can grab UCL next season and get Top 4 with good game results, after they pull in some new transfers and hopefully, 1 or 2 new coaches like for set pieces, which have been a huge spurs weakness and goalkeeping which has been slacking off with poor goalkeeping from Vicario, if spurs can bring in a good Striker like Toney or Jonathan David who's looking amazing right now, and Left Midfielder in the next transfer window as Richarlison probably doesn't have the quality to be consistently good as a starter and having to start Sarr who is frankly inexperienced and not very strong then add more depth to the winger spots and defense and selling Royal, Davies Forster or Austin and maybe even Hojburg. then Spurs will be a a very strong side.

​@zhilong Spurs have a net spend over a £100m for a while now, it's not the amount of money, it's the recruitment hasn't been good enough, spent £40m on Sanchez, £62m on Ndombele for example, loaning out the deadwood instead of selling isn't the answer either. Need to sell a good 10+ players, bring in 3 or 4 quality additions & some youth through, Spurs have the best U21 squad at the moment, the europa league will bring some chances for some of those players.

Nail on the head. Ange has far and away exceeded my expectations for the season. He's taken a Team that finished 8th last season but did so playing absolutely terrible football, add to that because of the managing styles of Mourinho, Nuno and Conte (the 2nd half of Conte's 1st season Spurs were actually very, very good) who basically had Spurs play for the past 5yrs playing a reactive style of football and a lot of that not well executed, Ange has totally transformed away from this. Both Artetta and Klopp didn't improve their teams league position in their first seasons both worse in every metric. Klopp improved Liverpool in his 2nd season, Arteta didn't manage that in his 2nd. To your point about getting the players we need to add to be better in executing his ideas, all the players we are already linked with address these concerns, that has to be good.

I think Ange was a little bit cursed by the strong start in a way. Everyone at the start of the season expected a long adjustment period, and some struggles with the inherited players and rusted on negative footballing strategy they were used to... Then they went and won so much early on, I think people kind of forgot that the plan originally was 'transition season' and 'build'. Then a few bad results late on in the season has a lot of knee jerkers shouting that the sky is falling.

Based on this analysis, what spurs need is really 2 better wingers since all the low blocks are giving them tons of space to play with.

Ultimately Ange needs a better squad suited to his system. Arteta was also found out at a point, but he was backed and built a squad that wins regardless whilst also growing as a manager. at Celtic Ange inherited a squad that lost the league by 25 points and its 3 best players in the summer. our support was absolutely furious and 10 games in a lot of people wanted him sacked, but he ended up winning the league against a Rangers side that lost the Europa league final on penalties. for 2 seasons the club was united and no one wanted to miss a second of Angeball. He knows what he needs and if he gets it results will follow. Celtic fans fucking love Ange but a lot of us where a bit angry when he left, not because the manner or timing, but because we know he wont get what he needs at Spurs.

He is doing a good job. Can’t be judged until the end of next season.

2.6 points per game average until matchday 10 (November). Since then, it's almost as low as 1.5 per game - that's worse than the poor runs of form that got Mourinho and Conte sacked. In other worlds Spurs have been appalling for much longer than they've been exciting or decent this season. Only thing saving Postecoglou is his ability to appeal to the media who enjoy his... quirkiness.

Plan A better is because he is trying to get a base set.. if you jump from left to right back to front, you will never get a base. Confidence and player profile will be game changing, then tactical tweaks can progress

I think Ange needs to add to his tactical repertoire and look to Brighton’s automated build up to instill some calm confident build up from there own box. Also not gonna lie a big yet versatile striker would complement this team well, using long balls and expanding the variety of play would certainly help give more options

Someone like Evan Ferguson or Ivan Toney would be perfect for how Spurs play, get rid of all the deadwood & it could be done, Spurs have as much money as Arsenal & they spent £100m on Rice. 3 or 4 quality players & give more playing time to guys like Donley & Dragusin & Spurs will be okay, will need a good set piece coach as well.

Spurs have obviously got into a horrible rut of poor form, low confidence, and anxiety on the ball. I feel its kneejerk to jump to conclusions about the manager or the players. We need the end of the season. There will be ins and outs. It will be a chance to reset. Then we'll see how we go next season.

My main thought all season is - if Kane was there to knock away the opportunities, drop deeper at times and generally provide class hold-up play, how would this team be performing? Obviously he's a world-class striker, but all comparisons to previous Spurs campaigns and other sides have to take out the decade Spurs have been able to rely on Kane. As Liverpool relies on Salah, Gunners rely on Oodegard etc. A lot to ask to make Spurs a better team in 1 season with their best player gone... and yet still 5th.

Great breakdown and I absolutely agree on your commentary. We need a number of players and things will improve. Considering I wanted 8th at best when Conte left, we are ahead of schedule and as a whole have played more interesting football. I’ve watched Celtic quite a bit under Ange and I’ve seen what I can look like, I hope it will translate to EPL but I’m willing to give him some windows to make it happen, or at least give it a proper try.

Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are 4 decent teams. Chelsea went on to thrash West Ham 5-0 after beating Spurs 2-0. Let's see how Spurs do in the next game against Burnley... a team they should beat.

Actually Adam, I do think you were spot on with our system....But moreover who fits into it. Sadly the rebuild has to now go into overdrive and Ange MUST be backed , and backed properly. Sadly however I like most Spurs fans have been here before, because with Levy , what we ask for and what we get are normally two different things , so we'll see what occurs and go from there

Kind of re-enforced what we already knew tbh. We really don't play that differently to Manchester city or even Arsenal most of the time, and it's not like Ange never went up against 2 blocks of 4 in his other managerial stints. If they're gonna pack the middle we need more dynamic play from our wingers, since they're repeatedly given so much space. Or maybe we should just be more willing to switch the play with a long pass more often. Doesn't seem like too big an issue to fix, especially when banking on adding another press-resistant midfielder or two. I mostly agree that it's a transfer market issue right now

You said in Klopp's first full season he finished 8th. That wasn't his first full season, that was the season he joined half way through. His first full season Liverpool finished 4th.

Great summary mate! It reminds me of early Arteta days, as an Arsenal fan i was permanently terrified as they messed around with it at the back. So yeah, i kinda agree! But then i am a gooner🤪

Spurs are a fun team. Love watching Ange-ball. More to come from Ange for sure. Impressive what he’s been able to do in his first season.

The perspective you offer at the end is spot on. We really need to give Ange more time to bed in his philosophy with players he trusts. Our great run earlier in the season covered a lot of cracks in the squad and we simply don't have the depth to play his way if we're missing a couple of players, or some are off form. I would, however, have liked to see some minor compromises out of necessity when we've been missing key components, such as a back 3 instead of insisting on Royal at LB. Hopefully we have enough players in the squad next season to play Ange's way consistently, and with confidence.

Great content, wonderful tactical breakdowns, finished off with a huge amount of hope… Big Ange will do brilliantly.

Nice analysis, I think it is spot on. I am on the Ange train and think it will work eventually when he gets the players that fits better. As an example, Kulusevski with inside forward ability on the right wing does not work, we need crosses like Porro's excellent crosses. Son as central striker does not work as he's easily taken out of the game. There is a lot of cleanup to do before it works flawless.

This was a great watch. Great analysis! How was the analysis for the last 20 minutes of the Spurs-Liv game, when we did play with the players who could move the ball forward? Was it better than the first half.

Spurs fan here, To be fair to Ange the team hashes this real difficulty with breaking down low blocks for several years now. Perisic's injury was a big loss with this.

I've been a Spurs fan since 2009. One thing I've noticed recently is that a great portion of the fans believe that Tottenham are at the level of Man City, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Bayern, etc. As delusional as they may be, this analysis nails what's going on at Tottenham spot on. It shows what I've been telling my buddies at the pub every weekend since January. The fans say the most toxic comments on spurs official social media, when they should be content we can still maintain this level of football with what we've got. We could've been an average team this season. But will likely end up being 5th. That should be fine. We just don't have the players who can properly execute the gapper's plan - even if it is just a singular plan! But the bottom line that I wanted to highlight was that this was a great analysis of what's going on with Tottenham. I appreicate it.

Well expectations were raised when Spurs topped the table after ten games early this season. They may still make fourth but it will still look like a comedown to their fans.

As a Newcastle fan this reminds me of all the criticism and sacking calls that Eddie received. Hang in there. It wasn’t any better under Conte and the squad (like Newcastle’s) is limited.

I'd like to see Mitoma from Brighton to Tottenham but highly unlikely I think.

As Spurs fan of 40 years....I agree up to a point. Yes, this coming transfer window is massive for the manager, in terms of trying to secure the type of players he wants, to suit his system. If that goes (relatively) welll, the team's results, particularly against the better teams may improve next year. However, I think there is a glaring flaw here, which is tactical inflexibility - almost everyone can see the playing out from the back, and then picking a pass through, working through phases approach has gone to shit for some time - as opponents have adapted to stop it. That will ALWAYS happen, no matter what the system and/or the personnel on the pitch. Surely a squad of professional atheltes can have more than one tactical approach within their repatoire? You can't hope to play the same tactics against every opponent and expect to win big games against decent opposition.

I'm having a hard time, as a spurs fan and an Ange fan, to understand how, with a system that seems to be pretty inflexible so far, was able to still fool all teams in the SPL, J-League, and A-League (as well as all the teams in the Asian cup). I mean, certainly in the case of Celtic, he had superior players, but not necessarily with those other squads. Do I need to just take it on faith that there will be a lot more tactical flexibility in year 2? Has anyone made a good tactical video on this progression from any of his previous jobs?

It's going to be an interesting season, that's for sure. Standing still, especially in terms of team cohesion and consistency, would be a complete failure for Ange. I'm not sure what substitutions he needs, but EVERYONE will be expecting Spurs to level up. You've GOT TO have faith, because what else is there?

The common denominator for all of those previous clubs is that they started poorly. Whether that be for a season or a chunk of a season. The real barometer of progress at Spurs will be in his second season

i do think it will be quite an issue to overcome opponents already having "solved" mateball. The fact you can't deny is that this tactic seemed to work at the start, but then fell off rapidly, causing two huge droughts resultwise. I do not know how the possibility of new players is going to help them.

"It's the players, stupid." Great analysis and supported with statistics and match data. But the Liverpool match also showed a real-time "controlled" experiment which shows that "it's the players, stupid." Liverpool goes up by 4 goals and then weakens their midfield by subbing out their starters and putting on children from the academy, and suddenly Spurs get a foothold in the game and score two goals. Same Tottenham team (improved a little with subs) against weakened opponents, better results. It's easy to get discouraged by the run of form, but the match sequence is probably one of the stiffest we've had in 20 years as well: playing two of the in-form teams in the Premier League away, one of which is a London derby in which we typically struggle to get a result (Newcastle, Chelsea), and then playing 2nd placed team (also bitter rivals/London derby), and 3rd placed team (away).

Good analysis. Ange is the victim of his own success. If the team had not taken to the system so well in the beginning it would have taken longer for EPL teams to react to his style of player, even potentially to his second transfer window. Ange may be found out, but it will take another season to see that. Right now his underdeveloped side of ill-suited players has been found that they CAN play this style of football and win against teams that don't play a low block, they just can't against low block teams. That Ange has forced top sides to react to HIS style of play is really something.

I'd go a little further and say the foundations of such a team is in its front 3. Sure they need to be better creatively but if you also find front three players that are robust and can tackle plus clever without the ball to time their press as a unit then that team would out perform most others.

Is it better to continue doing what you've been doing when you don't have the players for it and have been sussed out by the decent PL managers, or is it time to try something different? That's what puzzles me about Ange - his unwillingness to adapt. Pep and Klopp played multiple formations during their time, depending on the need of the moment. For Ange ball to work, he needs players that suit his style, but will Levy support him with a blank cheque to build his dream team? I suppose we'll find out this summer.

Ya just need the winger-bois in this summer. Maybe an extra six that's excellent in progression, maybe a backup left back or another quality center back. But uh, as fans I think we're fine and that this is substantially better than we expected.. This season was always gonna be tough coming off of the Conte years, and I think we're building the right way. Big note as always is that we have the stadium up and making money, which positions us obscenely well for FFP.

Yeah it's a transfer window issue but it's also shallow thinking from Ange. They could be in the champions league spot if he wasn't so stubborn.

Next season will be interesting with Spurs. Ange needs to tweak that system as they remind me of Liverpool under Rodgers, scored loads of goals but conceded loads.

The bigger question would be if Levy will back him fully with what Ange wants and sell the players he doesn't want as well.

But how do you stop teams tightening up in mid against us? Surely if thats all it takes to stop the system then its not a player issue

Fifth is very good for Ange in his first building season at Spurs. He'll need another two seasons to get where he wants to be a a huge load of cash. Not sure he'll be given what it takes. That's not the fault of the coach. The current squad hasn't enough quality so again achieving fifth with that is an outstanding result.

Chelsea fan here, and I agree. The harder thing to do at a club is to implement a philosophy, and, as you mention, the results on aggregate aren't that bad. He could be *more* pragmatic perhaps, but if Tottenham are going to stick with him--and they should--this was probably the right thing to do at least for this season.

It's Ange's first season, ok, that's valid. But the complete lack of adaptation is going to catch you, no matter how good your system or players are. Football IS adaptation. Klopp and Arteta started as bad (Arteta's first managerial job, btw), but you could see they were able to learn and adapt, even when they didn't have the right profiles. That's why you have subs, too, to make the changes the game requires. So far, Ange hasn't shown much of that. And that is very dangerous on the mid-long term.

As Adam said in the vid, Ange's strategy is essentially correct, but we've all seen how easily predictable it becomes for opposing teams if they don't switch the play up enough. Next season everyone will expect to see Spurs level up, maybe not to challenge for the top 2 - just yet - but to be more consistent and solid across the season. As for subs, I'm pretty sure he's been better than average. Several times he's changed the dimension of the game through clever substitutions. Not the system they're playing, so much, but rather the personnel.

Spurs fan here that thinks you have got it absolutely right. I want to see this system with the right players, players I’m sure he will bring in that can also play more than one roll, he seems to be a manager that can get that out of players well. We are desperate for competing defense line, right and left wing (please no more one footed players that don’t track back, bye bye Kulu) a creative midfielder and 2 strikers… Yes more or less a whole squad build but we have strengthened in just 1 winter transfer window.

Look forward for more of the same, but from Leicester next year. Plan A is great until it isn't.

Thing is though, against Man Utd at home Yanited were finding space out wide & attacking the wings creating a couple of big chances. Ange noticed this and switched Udogie to a traditional fullback, it worked and Spurs took control of the game eventually winning 2-0, where are those kind of tweaks now? It's just the same things over and over, I think you can't compete without some kind of backup plan in the premier league.
