How Exercise Benefits Your Brain - Exercise and The Brain (animated)

We all know that exercise makes us feel better, but most of us have no idea why. We assume it's because we're burning off stress or boosting endorphins. But the real reason we feel so good when we exercise is that it makes the brain function at its best. And in my opinion this benefit is far more important than what it does for the body.
Building muscles, conditioning the heart and lungs are essentially side effects.
Nowadays we spend most of our time sitting behind a desk or lying on the couch, and we have basically removed movement from our lives.
Our ancestors had to walk five to ten miles on an average day, just to be able to eat.
Since it takes tens of thousands of years for our biology to evolve, you can see there's a huge mismatch between our lifestyle and our genes.
The brain isn't a fixed organ that cannot be changed. It's adaptable and it can increase in size like any other muscle on your body. Or in the koala's case, decrease in size.
So guess what turns out to be the best thing you can do for you brain today. That's right, physical exercise.

This video is well presented and has some good information, but the multiple mentions of women having "mood swings" and especially the line "but it's not their fault" come across as outdated, and fairly condescending. Of course now we know that men also have hormonal cycles, and our cycle is shorter than women's, so our "mood swings" are more frequent. All humans have mood swings, and all humans have hormones which strongly effect them. Let's stop projecting the narrative that women are some kind of moody "other."

Thanks for the comment. I never stated that being fit makes you more intelligent though. Fit students have higher test scores because they have an improved ability to learn - thanks to BDNF. However if the fit student doesn't have an interest in learning anything, then he obviously won't score any better, even with the boost of BDNF. You still have to apply yourself, exercise just makes learning easier :)

I have been on psychiatric drugs, more than a couple, and I have horrible trouble sleeping. I’m 45 and still go through heart wrenching cycles of depression and anxiety, which includes horrible sleep problems. The only thing that has ever helped my psychiatric AND sleep issues is when I’m on a good exercise habit. It really is like a magic pill that cures the brain, everything falls into place. It feels like the front half of my brain is actually there and not just dead. But then something really bad happens that starts a downward spiral. The only thing that works is exercise. We were born to move. It’s all about telling that demon to shut up and just do it even though it feels like your brain and body are stuck in a giant mud pit, which is where I am now. It’s so much easier to do “12 ounce curls” than to exercise, which ends up just stealing happiness from tomorrow.

Who the fuck rest 10 minutes in between set while lifting? Rest is usually less than a minute...sooooo what say you now there is a such thing as high intensity weight lifting with increasing weights/rest. With a good workout you'll be out of breath sweating and quaking with pain.

Actually, we cannot "remember" that we evolved, because it actually never happened. What your observation teaches us is that God designed us to be in motion; not stagnant. Giving your life to Jesus Christ is the first step toward truly good health!
