How and When to use Amoxicillin? - Doctor Explains

This is an informational overview video on Amoxicillin. It is available as a powder for oral suspension, a tablet and an injection.
When to use it?
Amoxicillin is a wide-spectrum antibiotic. Which means it can be used to treat thousands different types of bacteria. Therefore amoxicillin is mostly used to treat infections caused by unknown microorganisms, such as:
An upper respiratory tract infection (like a sinusitis)
An lower respiratory tract infection (pneumonia)
An urogenital tract infection (Chlamydia)
An gastrointestinal infection (H. pylori bacteria that can cause stomach ulcers);
Infections in your bones (e.g., osteomyelitis, prosthetic joint infections);
And lastly severe skin and soft tissue infections.
How to use it?
Swallow it tablet whole, with a glass of water. Do not chew on it or crush it. Or resolve the powder in half a glass of water and drink it.
Always take it at fixed times: preferably in the morning and in the evening. This lowers your chances on forgetting a dose. Furthermore, do not interrupt or stop the treatment and finish it completely.
What is the correct dosage?
It is important to always follow the precise prescription your doctor gave you.
Dose for adults and children 40kg:
250-500 mg every 8 hours
750-1000 mg every 12 hours
In serious infections
750-1000 mg every 8 hours
Did you forget to take a dose? And does it take less than 4 hours till your next dose? Than skip the dose you missed and take the forgotten dose at the end of your treatment.
What are the side-effects?
(10%): diarrhea.
(1-10%): nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, skin reactions (such as exanthema and itching).
(0.1-1%): Dizziness, headache, super infections.
(0.01-0.1%): anaphylactic shock, convulsions, drug fever.
Safety:
You can combine amoxicillin with any type of food and even with alcohol.
Don’t use amoxicillin if you are hypersensitivity to penicillin.
Pregnancy and Lactation:
You can safely use amoxicillin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
However, you should stop with breastfeeding, if you are using amoxicillin and you child gets diarrhea, candidiasis and / or a skin rash.

What I find scary is thinking a world without penicillin or amoxicillin. I had two infections that if left untreated would have likely killed me. We are so luckily that we live in a time where these medication exist. Antibiotic is one of mankind's biggest achievements.

I had a toothache about a month ago so I went to the dentist to get a filling and a month later the pain increased! But I waited about 2-3 weeks because I knew my tooth was gonna be sore because the doctors just finished messing around with it. And then about a week ago my neck started swelling bad and I had trouble drinking eating etc. So now I’m taking amoxicillin to stop the infection from going any further to my neck.

@@josephamoraz7990 I too waited for too long. I can admit the pain really did go away from what I felt last year around this time. I was referred to an oral surgeons office that would remove the tooth but they pretty much dragged their butts, and myself too because again the pain went away. But this week BAAAAAAAAAAABY 😂😂😂😂 Monday night and all day Tuesday my mouth and head felt like it was about to explode. With some warm water, oraljel, and pain meds it finally eased up, I woke up and had a puss ball on the side of the tooth. The pain completely gone today and just took my first two pills that were prescribed at my appointment

I thought I might add: I have cardiology issues and have had an open heart surgery. Ever since that surgery, they prescribe amoxicillin to me before any major dental work (I'm about to get my wisdom teeth removed) as a prevention of potential infection since it would be incredibly dangerous to get an inflection in the cheat cavity.

Half of the time they don't keep our appointments because of overbooking. Is this malpractice ? I have a long list of complaints, but would appreciate any answers to these two. Hi Crazy Daan, Thank you for your question! The most common symptoms are: 1. A burning feeling while you pee. 2. A frequent or intense urge to pee. 3. Cloudy, dark, bloody, or strange-smelling pee. 4. Pain or pressure in your back or lower abdomen. 5. Fever or chills. I hope this was helpful.

Hi Tinka, I am not familiar with that brand, so I can't answer your question. You could always contact your treating physician or pharmacist. They will know.

Dear Sir, My daughter was prescribed amoxicillin last week for 10 days due to ear infection. She recovered in 2 days and as advised we continued with full course. On 8th day, she redeveloped fever but we managed with over the counter medicine. So , sir is it normal for fever to reappear ? If not , what should we do. Still 2 days are remaining for the course and we are continuing with it. Please suggest

Is it ototoxic? I heard it wasn't but upon further research, I think they could be. I have ear issues and CANNOT take any ototoxic drugs.

Well amoxicillin doesn't have much of a taste - to me it tastes like milk solids. What you should do is to hold some water in your mouth and pop the tablet in so that you can swallow it smoothly. That way you won't have to taste the tablet directly.
