I've started using hover starts where I make the hover lab, pop out 3-4 cons, then reclaim the lab when I go naval on this map. Claiming all the metal in your particular pond and island is a great way to start in my experience so far. They're also plenty fast so they 1-2 of the group can work on reclaim from the get go and do comparable to stuff like a lazarus. Best part is they stay useful all match by being fast and amphibious.

Let the hover constructors on the island idle. Could build more metal converters with them. Also, might go a bit greedier with the hover constructors after your first few waves and around the time you get T2; the moment when you said "need more build power". The people that play the geo position on straits generally go for bots or vehicles and act as backup front line for the strait, but I think you correctly used the position; hover and seaplanes from that position is really strong. The hovers let you escape confinement from the land and strait and the other player's land usage. Now, I want to see you combine what you've learned here with the meme video those other players did a while back where they landed an invasion force on the geo position in the lower right and started taking the island from geo up. Would work best if you had a competent air/seaplane player to high-five with. Congrats on the win. Thrilled to see you making big moves.

If you help your beach naval player defeat the enemy cliffside naval player quickly enough, it seems like it could work quite well to do an initial light hover assault, and use it as a means to setup a beachhead in that narrow entry way. The issue with doing forward bases like this, is that you have to be fast. If they're already solidly enough into T2 before you get your beachhead base pumping units, then you're likely to just get wiped out by superior units. When we did that geo landing in the other video, it was a really brutal fight keeping it alive. Was a lot of moments where they were actually on the verge of kicking us out. A bit over 12 hounds got D-Gunned off screen which is what left my com on 6% hp at one point, and another retaliation wave only got stopped by a hairs width, thanks to a few EMP drones. So doing damage quick, and having enough momentum to then tech up to match their reaction, is important. Starting the invasion base anywhere after the 10 min mark would very likely be too late. (Although if past that point, even a temporary tick spam base, would still force the enemy to react and divide their attention.)

@@UnknownSquid A forward base that is established as a means to eco harder or to try and solo carry is uniformly a bad idea in general. You can see this when people rush a transport to fly their commander to some distant spot then get crushed early to mid game typically losing their team's match. The point of establishing a beachhead is to force a split of the resources, efforts, and attention of the opposing players and teams; ideally, you want to force the front to split and go on the defensive because your team's front can then push and typically break the fragile opposing front to pour into the backline from main base for the win. Establishing the beachhead should basically never be an all or nothing thing; hover makes better sense for trying to pull it precisely because you can extend an expendable rapid deployment force to try establishing the beachhead while still having the starting base ecoing, teching, or uniting to fallback on. The beachhead itself is expendable in the worst case scenario. An ablative defensive position that should cost the opposition more than you lose. This is where static defenses shine; consider as a thought experiment what happens if 1000 hover constructors or advanced air constructors show up in the middle of your base and plant as many guns as possible before they're destroyed. If you have all the defenses inside your core base necessary to vaporize that before it can grow into something formidable more points to you, but I've watched more than a few games with highly rated players where no one got significant air power up or one side got unilaterally destroyed by bombers because no one built any significant static defenses or didn't setup any significant unit patrols to defend the borders of the base from incursions. Your successful beachhead used air transports to drop a whole contingent of units including several constructors on the geo location on the far right; you instantly put up static defenses, secured the position, and immediately began developing the geo and denying the opposition that position. It cracked the opposing team like an egg. The one criticism that I do have of that play was the commitment of your commander and the failure of the opposition to commit one of their commanders to counter it. Your commitment of the commander allowed you build power advantages and defensive advantages that were perhaps critical in that specific play, but it also risked losing the position and everything invested. Also, I note that y'all first tried to go north to the opposite beach, but the sea player there pushed y'all back. A hover contigent would be less risky and probably less expensive in terms of resources; it could be done considerably faster than the combination of bots and air that your force took. On the note of the sea player in straits; it is common move to set down a torp launcher then start constructing a ship yard. A sea player backed by a hover player is a really strong combo for taking the sea because the hover is immune to torps, so hover can take out that initial defense with relative impunity before the dolphin/destroyer spam can start. The sea player can take the whole ocean uncontested and back the hover's incursions onto the land while shifting into seaplanes. I highly recommend downloading and watching the game where Drongo got hammered by XFactorLive and watching it from XFL's perspective; the straight to hover open with two seekers and 4 hover constructors was inspired. Drongo's play this time was similarly inspired. I expect to see a well executed team game not too long from now on Straits where the back line and beach-side geo players go hover/air while supporting the respective adjacent sea players then immediately overwhelm the opposing forces with a coordinated hover/air assault within the first 5 to 10 minutes. All the bot/vehicle opens with no hover and no air where people are locked in useless conflict in the strait is perplexing as a strategy goes, and the meta is particularly stagnant if it believes that is the play on that map. Hover, sea, and air superiority is practically necessary for most players on the Straits map and maps like it. I look forward to seeing more of your creative plays.

@@UnknownSquid Also, I think a strait to hover open where you immediately dispatch a hover constructor to the opposing beach to establish a bot lab that starts tick spamming is an inspired play.

@@KAClown This all makes sense to me. Can certainly agree. I'll note though that bringing the commander to that cliff geo invasion was definitely 100% vital in it succeeding at all (at least in how that match played out). We would have lost the base in the first 30 seconds, if not for the com, or otherwise been unable to raid with our landed units, which would have kept the enemy stronger to react. One enemy com did react to challenge us, but we killed him during his attempt. It was also instrumental in aggressively reclaiming the wrecks around the forward base, and defending against the T2 that arrived before ours was up, which absolutely would have wiped us without any effort otherwise. I don't think committing the commander in that situation was an over investment. The old meta for backline has always been to self destruct them anyway, and it easily reclaimed many times it's own metal value by being on the field. The build power equivalent of one and a half nano turrets wasn't a significant amount to divert from my home base at that point, which only needed enough to do light steady eco expansion. Not saying that one should always be brought, but I do think it probably defines the difference between a 5 minute raid/distraction base, and a sustained threat that can force the enemy to seriously commit. Fighting on the front with a com is generally the highly recommended meta for any lane map. I figured that if we were going to fight SupStraight as if it were one, made sense to bring one. I'm definitely interested in trying to do this with a naval and hover player team though. The only catch in my mind, is how do you prevent the enemy Com from just shutting down the attempt after you've forced it back onto land?

  • @TheRealGaffer

I guess it depends how you want to select the units. If you want all of 1 unit on the entire map, you can select the desired unit and hit ctrl+z. Alternatively, if you select a unit and press alt+number you'll assign it to an auto-group and be able to press the assigned number again to select all of the unit type(s) in that auto group. in a pinch you can also double click a unit to select all of that 1 unit on-screen. Or finally if you drag a box around a mixed unit area, you can click which unit type of the ones you have selected down in the bottom left of the screen to only select that unit.

come on, they are not op. They can "hover" but they don't even have a T2 evolution. If you spam > 100 of T1 blitz tanks, you will also be able to kill the backline. If they would have a few fatboys/ Hounds etc., they could defend your push ;) If they would attack you with 100 blitz tanks, you would say they are OP :D ?! Don't get me wrong. It was a good play from your side but also not the best game by the enemies :D
