Homemade Camper Shell part 2
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Just a quick follow up video of the campershell I made for my 2013 ram. I had to get it done on short notice as I was getting a new truck and it won't fit the new one. My plan for the new truck is to make a flat hard cover that can be removed by one person in under a minute! I have it designed, just need the time to build it.

I really like the idea of the back opening that it locks with a truck tailgate very smartly thought out! to make it more challenging to break into the back; thanks for sharing your ideas.
That camper shell you built looks awesome great job 👍😎🎸
First thing to try is to pick up a topper on craig's list or something. When that fails, buy the cheapest topper you can find and remove the windows from it and install them in your DIY shell. That's what I did. The old topper cost me $50 and I got 3 windows out of it. Dresses up my DIY shell. Just a thought.

@honeytos28 That was my next plan if I didn't find an old topper.
I like this keep it simple , thanks for sharing your build!
Thank you for the video. I have to make a one-way move cross country and I have enough scrap materials to make something like this so I am. I am also incorporating brackets on the roof to bolt on my 16' extension ladder.
Thanks for the video. Very practical. In mine I'm going to try to increase the back dimension to add a bit more headroom. I'm not sure yet. Just wanted to say thanks for the idea. I first was looking for an aluminum camper shell n cut the length down to fit my 5'-6" bed. But I want to also add an extension that slides in to my tailgate because I'm a bit tall for my bed length. Wasn't thinking when I bought this truck...but it's cheaper than buy a new truck. God Bless.
Good Idea on the J bolts
This video sounds like it is narrated by Dr. Steve Brule. Haha. Awesome.
Thanks for the videos. I watched both. They seem good for what I need. I see a few modifications I can make as you pointed out. I'm thinking if 2x2 will be light enough. I like the "J" hooks attachment. I don't mind my zero visibility because I have a rear view camera. But pictures are great.
Awesome idea with the j bolts, I'm thinking up plans for building a composite foam shell and having a hard time coming up with a way to mount it. The j bolts will probably work just fine for me. Are the bottom rails of the shell 2x6?
Nice job
Very nice, does the job and inexpensive, great idea!

I'm glad you liked it!
1000000 de Gracias.
How did you fasten the 3 arches to the 2*4s around the base? Glued @ the joint and screwed from the bottom of the base board into the arch?
I keep coming back to your video because it's more of what I like. I like the 22.5 degree sidewall but I have a soft tonneau cover now. It will be wider than the top with the 22.5 degree angle. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks for the video how high is the wood shell
How did you pick a gas shock/strut? (Length and force of the shock) . . . I need one for a similar door.
Great job my friend that was good as I would do it but you gave me an idea cuz I want do the same thing because I didn't want to buy one from the stores I saw them I want to $3,000 for these things I can make my own I'm a carpenter but you gave me a great idea thanks for the idea if I knew that you were local why I live up north are coming by that off you but my I have a Chevy 1500 pick up...
What angle are the side support cut at?
Nice!
I always wanted to put tent on top of such a camper.
Where’d you get those gas struts? Plz lmk know
I have a 1987 Dakota how would I build a topper like that I just want something simple to cover my stuff. How long did it take to build yours did it cost alot
Did you u have to drill holes into those 2 by 4’s in order to use the j bolts?
How much does that weigh? Do you know?
Nice.. I made one similar for my Nissan but I feel the next one will need a curved roof to shed the water better. Also I may need to put a nice gloss paint on it as well. Only problem I feel I may run into is that plywood will stretch and crack if bent just a little. I'd like to put something else on top other than plywood but I'm not sure what else to use that will be strong yet weather resistant.

What about bending the plywood and then using something the thin white plastic panels for shower walls over that? The plastic would give you a good smooth surface but the plywood would give you the strength. Maybe some contact cement to hold the plastic to the wood.

Galvalume roof panels work great and are not expensive. Add a ridge cap and your set.

I’m almost finished building mine, based off your video. But I can’t figure out the door. It looks like I have the same hinge as you and the same material positioning as your model but the top of the door pinches the top of the trim piece and won’t open all the way
Is that a long hinge on the door? I was a little stumped on the door detail.

Looks like a piano hinge
Im going to build one like this tomorrow and film it. Cant buy a real one because of covid lead times. Using a 4x8 on the top, the bed is about 6 feet wide, so the angle and rise need to end at 4 feet wide for the top… Thats all i got so far.
Is it for sale? I have the exact same truck as you 2013 small back doors red 5.7 hemi!
No rear view windows?
I love the final product yet have no skills to build such. I need a cap for my Dodge Dakota but cannot afford it. I would certainly appreciate guidance , especially the angles for the frame work, that you could give. :)

Use a large piece of cardboard, set the straight edge on the front of the truck bed up against the cab window, have one edge stick out past the edge of the cab. Trace the edge of the cab onto the forward face of the cardboard. Use a straight edge to make any curves you traced into a straight line. Cut the cardboard along this straight line. This is the angle to cut the cap sides at. If you traced the top of the cab onto the cardboard, the cardboard is you template for the cab front walls and frames
What angle did you cut the side rails at 📐
Use it in your new truck. If you built it , you will find a way to make it fit on the other one.
Nice job! Did you ever get around to making a hard cover for the new truck?

How much wood? I'm trying to escape these crazed women and start a life on the road. I cant afford a $700 cap. I am forced to make one. How much wood and how long to make?

I can make you a better one. As a licensed carpenter, this isn’t the best “build.” Skilled labor isn’t cheap, cheap labor isn’t skilled
If anyone got any questions at all or need any info, anything at all, any questions, I won’t fucking reply so please ask away. Remember- any questions at all now 🤪
