Homemade Camper Shell

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I was in need of a quick solution to transport my tools back and forth to job sites. With how tall my new miter saw was, a tonneau cover wasn't an option. I couldn't afford to pay $2,000+ for a real truck cap, so I made my own for a little over $150.
If you like this, I have lots of other project videos that will be much more detailed coming up, so please Like, Comment, and Subscribe.
Thank you!

    If you hung some more playwood down with hindges you could flip them up to level and pitch a tent up top and enter from inside.

    I gotta tell ya it looks great. I bought a 1990 Cheyenne Chevy truck c1500. I'd love to see the plans you used for yours. I went shopping for a cap. $800.00 used. I just thought that was too much

    1/2" ply? Love it - simple elegant solution. Who needs the fancy windows, really?

  • @mytinyworkshop2813

    @mytinyworkshop2813

    I believe i used 11/32 ply. I figured that way i would cut down on the weight. Plus my original idea was to make the sides and the top curved, but i wasn't able to do this due to time constraints. My thought with windows was its just something else to leak and it just lets everybody know what tools I'm hauling around

    +MyTinyWorkShop Absolutely. Out of sight out of mind. I think the flat top is better. You can throw sheet goods on top and not worry about them rocking. Since surfaces parked on are rarely level rain should flow off. Maybe snow load, but then just shovel it off, no big deal.

  • @mytinyworkshop2813

    @mytinyworkshop2813

    That was my thinking and so far so good! I can throw all my tools back there and not have to worry about them getting wet and if i get home late from working and don't feel like unloading, i know they are relatively safe.

    MyTinyWorkShop Hey guys I've been looking through the comments trying to see what thickness of wood?? Have a few sheets of 3/4 inch wood but I'm afraid it may be too thick.. this is for my Fathers King Can frontier we're making a camper for when we go rock hunting :o

    Wow! Your shell is exactly what I want to make for my Nissan Frontier. Loved your video! Have you gotten around to a more detailed video yet? I like your design and especially the tailgate area that opens and keeps weather out. I will be making a slight design change as I need side opening doors on either side. Thanks for sharing. PS...just subscribed

    Thank for subscribing! Thank you for the compliments as well. I hoping to get a new video up on it soon. I have a few changes i want to make to it as well. But i can honestly say that i love this thing. minus water that comes up around the underside of the tail gate, it stays dry as a bone. One thing i plan to add soon is a roof rack for hauling longer lumber, along with some 12v led light strips. The lift gate has been amazing. Doesn't leak at all and being able to lock it with my remote key has been wonderful. Once i get done with my current projects, i will try and make getting some more details on this on video a priority.

    The "lift gate?" Are you referring to the door in the canopy? I got to thinking about the door and I remember in a canopy that I used to have (sold it) went over the top part of the tailgate on my truck. It had a swivel type handle with a key slot in the center of the handle. That would mean that in following your great canopy, I'd have to make it a wee bit longer for a door to partially cover the truck tailgate so it would not be an easy open for dishonest folks. Am I on the same page with you or am I way off base? Thanks for any reply. PS Now I understand why you used 2x4 instead of 1x1. The roof rack is an excellent idea!

    We are definitely on the same page. I thought about making side doors on mine as well but i figured that was just another spot that it could leak. I would love to see what you come up with when you make one.

    They are cut at 22.5 degrees. I was just playing around with scraps to find the angle. This one worked best too because my miter say has a positive stop at 22.5 degrees.

    Awesome build! I'm looking to do a similar build on my Taco. About how much does yours weigh? I'll probably buy some 40 gauge clear vinyl to use on all 4 sides to use as windows (will cut down further on weight as well). Thanks!

  • @mytinyworkshop2813

    @mytinyworkshop2813

    Thanks! I would say it weighed around 150lbs. Definitely a two man job to take it off. The vinyl would really cut down on that weight. I had planed to add some plexiglass windows later on but since then it is no longer in use since i got a different truck. Hopefully now that we are done unpacking from the move, i can get started on the hard cover for my new truck. Thanks for watching!
