Heaven's Gate (Michael Cimino, 1980) Ella's Waltz

Фильм және анимация

Lovely dance scene from Michael Cimino's misunderstood masterpiece, "Heaven's Gate". With Kris Kristofferson, Isabelle Huppert, and music by David Mansfield (who plays the bandleader).

People criticized the choice of Isabelle Huppert in this role because she was Michael Cimino's squeeze. But she was actually really good in the part and moulded into the film well. Now that the film is finally regarded as the classic that it is, she's earned a spot in Hollywood history.

Don't worry about the dislikes ("thumbs down"). They probably came from "SOME" young people who have no appreciation for beautiful and romantic music. This scene is beautiful, in my opinion, the best in the movie.

The film was a masterpiece -- from photography to costuming to soundtrack to acting. Isabelle Huppert was luminous. Christopher Walken beautifully captured the essence of a gun for hire who rose from being an uneducated man to one who was trying to better himself (the 'wallpaper", the carefully printed diary). Kris Kristofferson was absolutely astonishing in his portrayal of a man caught between two worlds and truly comfortable in neither .And Jeff Bridges provides a great deal of lighter moments until the devastation of the battle scene. Yes, the ending was sad. But it certainly demonstrated that even in the 1890s, money was more important than people. The critics reviewed the budgetary excess. Period! European audiences understood from the get-go that a film should be judged as a creative endeavor (and the film is not without flaws as a creative endeavor). Critics in general have too much power. After all, those who really can't DO anything themselves are usually the ones who make a living as critics. I'm trying to think about some critic writing in a media outlet of the time about the Sistine Chapel -- "The quality of the painting was only mediocre at best, and having to look up at the overwhelming detail is quite uncomfortable for the viewer. Mr. Michelangelo failed to bring his project in on time and under budget, which diverted scarce resources which might have been better expended on projects which cou,d have furthered the careers of a new generation of artists. His papal patron should rethink utilizing this so-called artist, whose visions are becoming sadly passe".

This film is indeed a masterwork. By the time of its release, Cimino had managed to offend most critics (who had been barred from the filming) and had pushed the studio to bankruptcy. The opening reviews were awful. But if you watch the real version, the full restored version, you may discover how brilliant this really is.

That is why critics and producers are a worthless bunch. Just look at all the movies critics trashed, that the public loved. Casablanca wasn't a hit when it came out, not till decades later. And producers are usually the ones that ruin a movie in the editing. Look at all the movies that failed, and then yrs later, the director's cut came out,and people loved it

"That is why critics and producers are a worthless bunch. Just look at all the movies critics trashed." Listen, it wasn't the critics' fault Heaven's Gate was a huge flop - it was your *precious public* who didn't like it. Last time I checked 90% of them never read a single review before seeing a movie and only go to see it on the recommendation of their friends or some "cool looking trailer". Do you honestly think Heaven's Gate wouldn't have been a flop even if it had gotten rave reviews?? Tons of high quality cinema get fantastic reviews but the public doesn't go and see them because it's "too dull", "too arty" or "too uninteresting". "Just look at all the movies critics trashed, that the public loved." Yeah, 90% of those movies are utter, brainless trash. You mean like Michael Bay's Transformers movies, Twilight, Fifty Shades of Grey, Suicide Squad etc etc? Those were huge box office hits the critics trashed and we should be grateful they did. We should *wish* the public read the professional film critic aggregate score and followed their advice so that they could stop making those godawful movies. But until then utter crud makes close to a billion. Don't try to convince me the 7th Fast and Furious movie was some cinematic art and yet it made 1,2 billion worldwide. To hell with the public, I don't even know why you're defending them when it was them who started seeing the cinematic equivalent of McDonald's Happy Meals for billions. How come the public hasn't discovered the greatness of Heaven's Gate in 37 years after its release? Going to blame the critics for that too?? "Casablanca wasn't a hit when it came out, not till decades later." Yeah, and again you wrongly think the public seeing the movie or not has one iota to do with what the critics write. Hate to inform you of this but mostly they don't. George Lucas's Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace made over a billion worldwide and yet nobody seems to have liked that one. When a franchise is a cultural phenomenon people will go and see it regardless of how horrible it might be. Last of all. Todays' critics are generally split and polarized over Heaven's Gate. Some say it's better than its nasty rumor, others believe it's still bad 30+ years later and a deserved flop. What about the public? Well, it's safe to say they haven't made Heaven's Gate even a cult favorite unlike say Blade Runner or The Thing became years after their initial release. Where are all the people flocking to see it? They're too busy watching the zillionth sequel of some mindless franchise. The day simplistic special effects extravaganzas like Cameron's Avatar makes 2,7 billion worldwide is the day I stop listening to what the hell the public thinks is a good movie. Unobtanium... please.

Never before has a film divided opinion so much, you either LOVE it or HATE it. Personally this is one of my all time favourites and is up there with Blade Runner, Once Upon A Time In The West, Midnight Cowboy or any of the iconic masterpieces. I also think its a far stronger film than The Deer Hunter which to my mind was weakened overall by the plot involving De Niro's return to Vietnam for Nicky. There ain't another picture in history that looks like this either, though many have imitated it.

To say so many folks missed the essence, the heart and soul of this masterpiece is an understatement. I came from a humble European country to the US and how I identify with those pilgrims is uncanny. The music is terrific to anyone who isn't into rap 24/7. There is romance, style, and beauty in it that has so badly escaped current American hip hop, rap, etc.

I think the problem with this movie was all of the bad press it received even before it was released, sure it is slow in parts but I think it has its moments. This movie was Cimino's passion project so I can empathize with the fact that he had a vision and wanted to make this a masterpiece. But that attention to detail was his undoing

I am not going to claim that "Heaven's Gate" is a classic, but it is at least as good as "Reds" and "Ragtime". At least Michael Cimino put some passion into what he was trying to do. Look at what we have today for movies! Movies based on comic books. Enough said.

In my 50s now. Many anti-war folk disdained The Deer Hunter at the time--mostly because it cornily romanticized small town America, excused American barbarism in Southeast Asia by demonizing the Vietnamese. The Russian roulette scenes were ridiculously melodramatic but riveting and visceral as hell. Made Christopher Walken's career.

Nice sequence here, it wouldn't be out of place in a Coen Brothers film (or Tarantino film, for that matter). But a good film should have the context of why this scene was included. Does this advance the characters' relationship or the story in any way? Or did the director just want to see this played out in visual form?

They should've kept the sets built and made it into a tourist attraction to teleport guests back to the 19th century. This film is amazing (the director's cut) and I'm sure the 5 hour cut is more superb. Imagine if the studio spent $40 Million to make Once Upon A Time In America or The Godfather Part 2 or Barry Lyndon and they made Leone, Coppola or Kubrick cut their visions down to 2 hours how bad those films would've came out. I've always wanted to see how the 5 hour cut turned out. Cimino was a masterful director and deserved better than a studio with a story editor and a production manager calling the shots.

I'm a big Cimino fan and this movie is so underrated. Ok, so he literally killed off some animals, he learned from his mistakes. If the re released was the 1980 version, Cimino's career would be still alive today with him winning two more Oscars with several more Oscar nominations. Heaven's Gate, which is called one of the worst films ever made, is now an injustice film with Cimino's career unfairly dead.
