In response to the news of Cimino’s death, Jeff Bridges (who plays a character loosely based on one of his relatives, John Bridges) wrote on Facebook that Heaven’s Gate was a “movie about a particularly fascinating time in American History when Cattle Barons, sanctioned by the United States government, waged war on emigrants-the Johnson County Wars. … The many months of shooting in Montana were a one of a kind movie making experience. When Heaven’s Gate came out, many critics called it a flop, a disaster. Well…that’s just their opinion, man. To me, and many others, it’s a masterpiece, and grows in beauty each time it’s seen.”

I love John Hurt, but it was criminal how they just sidelined this character after the first few scenes. For the rest of the film, he's just in the background spouting single lines of poetry with no bearing on the story.

Apparently he spent so much time waiting between scenes that he made The Elephaht Man in his spare time.

@@davidlisowski5245 Another interesting bit of fact.. Hurt also was able to help paint Michael's new edition on the Hollywood home and get his riding mower up and working.

I agree, after the graduation there was no point to him whatsoever, i guess he was there as a contrast to Kristofferson’s character but it wasn’t developed enough and if that’s what they wanted then having Sam Waterston’s character as the university best friend who took a different path would have been more effective
