Michael Cimino on capturing the real world on film

Фильм және анимация

In this segment from our DVD of HEAVEN’S GATE, which features behind-the-scenes footage from the film, director Michael Cimino discusses the need to demolish the walls of the film frame. “You want to get to the real world," he says. "Movies have something essentially magical about them. In the words of my friend Bernardo Bertolucci, you're creating a nostalgia for a past that never existed.”

Yes this film had narrative and dramatic flaws, but from a purely visual standpoint, Heaven's Gate is and will remain one of the supreme achievements of American cinema.

me: geez, the critics were a little harsh on Heaven's Gate. Why didn't they just criticized the movie, and not the budget! Criterion: opens a special feature with a cart crashing onto someone with the very first shot.

The way Cimino was treated was almost criminal they used him as a scapegoat to crush the Auteurs and bring about the slow steady decline of cinema to the point we are at today. Hevans Gate is problematic and flawed but also utterly gorgeous and reaching for some kind of truth. Ciminio may have been out of control but to listen to his deeply profound words here and think about the film he was TRYING to make versus what we get fed today it just feels like we have lost So much since this era of flimmaking.
