most people in this comment section aren't even aware who she is, they probably came here after watching videos of people criticizing the film. sad to see this hate for the film still exists for some people. if you want to know her range as an actress there are many films you can watch, the last one I saw was the piano teacher, her performance in that blew me away

One of our greatest living actresses and if people aren't even aware of who she is then I wonder what they are doing here - seriously. I loved her small but eye-catching performance in Going Places from the 1970's through The Ceremony with her beloved Chabrol, The Piano Teacher ( I doubt many US actresses would've taken that role) up to Elle for which she should've taken the Oscar ( much as I love Emma Stone) and not one of the US actresses offered the part would accept - enough that the entire country/language of the story had to be re-done. So...

Heaven's Gate is a tremendous film. Revolutionary. Heaven's Gate is to film what Moby Dick is to literature. And Isabelle is wonderful.

Well for starters it made no sense to have a French actress in middle America 19th century

Interestingly enough the character she played-the real Ella Watson-in historical-spoke with a thick Scottish accent!

I agree it's a visually extraordinary film...and her scenes are the best thing in it.

Just watched Heaven's Gate again (Criterion 219min version). How anyone ever thought this was a terrible film just boggles the mind. The scope, beauty and acting of it make it one of the great films of the period.

I am a huge fan of Huppert's and always find her fascinating in everything I've seen to date. I'd read in many publications that she was sorely miscast as Kate in Heaven's Gate ( which I have not seen) so was curious to hear what she had to say about her working on the film. Of course, the smart and professional woman that she is - has nothing but praise. I'm ashamed to admit I thought I'd I'd hear her dissing the movie and it's director. I will watch it definitely but I greatly admired The Deer Hunter and found it an intense and at times, gruelling experience, but that is the true power of cinema. Not as popular but I also was a great fan of Year of the Dragon - a fascinating film with a great turn by Mickey Rourke.

The film could be remastered again and again with improvement considering the number of feet shot .

I find "Heaven's Gate" deeply flawed because the beautiful CAMERA compositions did not support any core thematic "deep structure" in the Story. But Isabelle Huppert was absolutely wonderful! Drop dead gorgeous in 1980! OMG!

To be fair, those two movies really stand out as incredible. If only he had been more gracious and less egotistical. If he had a constant drive to always do better, like Scorsese or Spielberg, we could have had so many more magnificent films from him.

She's struggling to convey what she means, simply because English isn't her first language. She's a great actress. She's talking about Heaven's Gate. Terrible movie.
