The Dance scene is absolutely crucial to the film, and is an incredibly beautiful scene. For you to find no entertainment value in it says more about you than the film.

I'm not a film critic, but I think Heaven's Gate realisticly captures a period of our history. Our ancestors were very hardy people and I respect the talent and artistry required to produce this magnificent story on film. The roller skate scene brings back old memories. Yes, we actually had wooden floor skate rinks back in the day.

This scene is meant as a contrast to the Victorian era estrangement and isolation of the dance scene after the Harvard graduation earlier in the film. It paints an important emotional picture of the people scraping by out on the range. The rollerskating is a metaphor for the hard work it takes these people to go in circles and the joy they get out of being alive.

I remember skating at a place in Dallas in the late 60's and 70's, it was Twilight Time skating rink. The owner always started the first session with that lovely song, "Twilight Time." I remember two stepping, scissors races, shoot the duck, and the sock hops after the last session. what a sweet, innocent time in our lives that was. They also had a Valentine Sweetheart contest. Two of my friends were Sweethearts. They had beautiful portraits out in the lobby. I hope they got them to the former queens before the building was demolished.

Sorry I have not replied sooner but the soundtrack to Heaven's Gate is readily available online. It features both the upbeat roller rink music and the slow waltz from the scene's end. All of the music was composed by the wonderful david mansfield who played the fiddler on skates in this scene.

It was also critically panned - particularly upon release with critics like Roger Ebert referring to the film as "the most scandalous cinematic waste I've ever seen" and Vincent Canby saying the film is like "a forced four-hour tour of one's own living room". Much of the negative reception was because of the infamously difficult process Michael Cimino put the the cast and crew through - much legend was created out of it.

It's amazing how polarized people are regarding this movie. They are either full of praise saying it's an underappreciated masterpiece people lacked the ability to fully grasp, or they downright hate it and use ridiculous insults worthy of videogame playing kids. Personally I think both extremes are wrong. I believe the film is beautifully shot and the craftmanship top class. The biggest problem is that the main story takes forever to get going, and many scenes such as this only veer off.

I appreciate your comment, and it helped me to realize what I also liked about HG when it came out. It portrayed the West in the way that it was ..... especially the "open to all" part (except Indians, of course). That was the enduring romance of the West, and this film was a major departutre from the conventional western in that regard.

  • @bleumangue

One day this movie will be accepted for the magnificent pictorial of immigrant life in America that fueled the 19th century, Cimino was so far ahead of his time he may as well have been channeling Nostrodamus in cinematic terms. His cast wore period clothing right down to hosiery and underwear to complete the feel of the time. What killed this film was that its political statement overshadowed its westerny theme .... Nobody wants to see a film that reawakens that nagging feeling that we live in a country that was stolen, abusive, and never meant to provide the equitable bullshit we like to throw at the rest o the world.

That is merely opinion that nobody wants to see a film that makes a political statement. All movies, to some degree, has a point of view. What's wrong with that? And that is the biggest flaw in not only professional critics, but the general public in reviewing a movie. The masses need to learn the difference between whether a movie (as film) is good or bad, as opposed to whether they like the genre, or like/dislike a director's political statement in a movie. Too many critics showed their ignorance in the past by bashing Oliver Stone's movies, as they pointing out his political views, as opposed to whether the movie itself was good or not...as film, as Art. I can disagree, or dislike the message, or view of a film, but I differentiate that fro whether the actors, story, cinematography, etc. was good,or not

This is a great movie, there has been many about the Johnson County wars, This one is the best. I have watched it 8 0r 10 times and would watch it again. This is possibly Chris Christopherson's best picture. The sets were real and it seems like you are there. It was not historically correct., but the brutality of the Cattleman's Association was not entirely fiction. I give it two thumbs up ! The critics had their heads up their asses, when they booed this one. It may not make anyone rich but is truly a work of art. Another sleeper is South of Heaven West of Hell. Good music as well.

Michael Cimino's dedication to authenticity is legendary, thirteen3, whether as a ruinous obsession or drive for perfection is a separate matter. I've heard that he even required his actors and actresses to wear the underwear of the period. That’s all I need to know to accept that this is the way people conducted themselves in Johnson County, Wyoming, in 1892. We’ve all been raised on the cowboy-and-Indian aspect of the opening of the American West, but that does not make it the WHOLE truth.

A few beautifully shot scenes and amazing cinematography don't make a movie. Ironically scenes like these deviate from the main plot, which feels like it never really gets going. Maybe the movie is great if you already have read the novel it's based on, but a film really needs to stand on its own.

@@SamManzanita Coline seems to understand the problem with Heaven's Gate and by extension this scene really well. The scene is awesome to look at but in terms of story and character its pointless. And pointless scenes can be okay if the characters and stories are well developed. HG was never well developed. The party scene in Titanic was supposed to contrast the way of life in 1st and 3rd class. This scene is about the community but we never get a real sense of the community. Not to mention the actors spent weeks prepping this scene-a real indulgence in a movie where there was so little character development occurs.

@frantic1971 - William Brown patented a design for the wheels of the roller skate in Birmingham, England, in 1876. I have seen 19th century roller skates for sale in antique shops in the Pacific Northwest. Don't be so sure of yourself. As for the scene, my wife and I think it is one of the happiest scenes we'ver ever seen on film. We'd love to try the dance. But then, we met at a ballroom dance.
