H1MIN: KAYABA Ka1 / Ka2 AUTOGYRO

Ғылым және технология

The Kayaba autogyro was one of the first armed rotary-wing aircraft to be used operationally in WW2. While not a helicopter, this unique aircraft was able to fly with very short takeoffs and landings. Its impact on WW2 was negligible, but it had unique capabilities that proved useful for spotting and reconnaissance.

Interesting sidenote - The Imperial Japanese army had it's own escort carriers, and if I'm not mistaken, the one you mentioned was one of those. The army and the navy really hated each-other.

Recalling my poor memory, this aircraft was pretty good at anti submarine. IIRC, in one action, the IJN escort carrier that had these aircrafts managed to sink/damage most of the US sub in the area. However, one sub managed to evade detection long to sink the escort carrier, taking all its planes with it...including the autogyros.

How did it counteract the torque of the rotor? Unless the thrust of the propeller and the tail could adjust for it, seems like it would be lucky to fly straight.
