they are both doing an important job; tourism. they are part of the reason tourists visit England and bring billions in. The horse doesn't look too bothered really, probably well used to it and it provides a bit of distraction during his 'watch', and you can always tell who has minty gum or sweets in their pocket!!

Had a friend who did a stint as a guide there. You are allowed to have your photo taken close to the horse and guard. You are allowed to touch the horse, but be guided by the reactions of the horse. Some horses are like some people, they don’t like to be touched and crowded. They will mouth you. You are NOT allowed to touch the guard. You are NOT allowed to touch any of the tack. If the guard feels the horse is being crowded, you WILL be shouted at. Apparently there are tourists from certain areas who are notorious for flouting the rules.

I lot of city people have never been near a horse in their life. So being able to stand near one, and maybe even stroke it is an amazing experience. The majority of these horses are very docile, once they are accustomed to the public. This horse was deliberately engaging with anyone who stood on its left side (which is the side that is generally used to approach and mount a horse). The horse nuzzled a couple of women who had not attempted to pat it, and gave them some really nice photo opportunities.

However many obviously just think household are tourist / tourism photo ops without realising all with in the household be that foot guards through to cavalry just there for tourism. Never mind the horse might kick or bite, I really think a new sign needs to be put up stating these are serving front line soldiers Iraq, Afghan, cypres etc. While here it's ceremonial duty, give the horse the trooper respect and we might be reciprocal in return. Best bet is to put a chain barrier around the sentry and horse giving them 10ft clearance from the tourists. That at least will let the sentry do his/her prime job which is to protect the property and sus out any intruders/trouble makers in the crowd. For too long the poor sentry has had to spend all his/her time sensing the horse's mood and stopping people messing with the horse and tackle . If it does kick or bite someone you can bet the blame will fall squarely on the innocent sentry and horse. Personally, I would like to see the whole area blocked off from visitors. Seen a few of these now, and though I understand that most people don't have a clue about horses, the thing I don't get is _why the fuck anyone would think they can just go up and touch things which are clearly nothing to do with them,_ but clearly quite a lot to do with a perfect stranger. Infantile self-obsession springs to mind, as does rank, thoughtless stupidity. Once an hour, could we chain some randomly selected tourist up to the gate and have some different stranger touch his or her face every 10 seconds instead, just to give the animals a break.

How stupid are these people who grab their reins? That's the control of the horse. They're lucky they didn't lose a hand. There's a sword RIGHT THERE too. I can see why that necessitates an inspection of the tack. I loved how the first horse decided who it would tolerate, and approaching too close from his left earned pinned ears and a head swing at the perpetrators. haha

The Household Cavalry should contact Madame Tussaud's for some spare hands off waxworks. Have a small pile of them next to the horse, sprinkled with ketchup. Similarly, smear ketchup on their swords. That should make then think twice!

I do wish people were not able to get so close to the guard and horse. It must be so overwhelming and draining for the horse and guard, not really knowing how far some people go with their overfamiliar demands?

If you are nervous of horses don’t go near. Squealing and jerky actions aren’t a good mix with most animals. It’s just as well these horses are so well trained. It’s clear some people are not suited to be near horses or any animal.
