As a US citizen, I find it utterly rude that people would even think of grabbing the reins. These horses are on duty, just like the guard in the saddle. I wish these boneheads would realize that they are part of the military, not a petting zoo. I also would thank the guard and horse, for the photo opportunity and for their service.

They don't seem to mind people stroking the horse, it's when they have the audacity to hold the bridle &/or rains etc.... This is how the officer controls the horse! A horse, which is well trained soldier & as a weapon, & is more than fully capable of hurting someone! If someone else is holding the reins/bridle & the officer needs to move the horse, the signal is stopped/changed & horse doesn't know what is wanted from it... It's like walking up to an armed guard/police officer & holding onto their gun... Taking hold of the reins, is basically, taking hold of the soldiers weapon... Plus, the horse is not only regarded as part of the soldiers weaponry, but it is also an officer in the Kings Guard, in its on right! It can receive medals just as a human can, it has to good through a lot of training to do its job too! They are a team who have trained together & they look out for each other!

Dumb comment. If the military wanted the horses to be treated in the same light as guide dogs, then they would prohibit the horses being touched at all. Since that is not the case, it is clear the horse and rider are for the tourists to have their pictures taken with them, and from all the videos I have seen, the tourists are permitted to pet the horses. The horse and rider are on site, strictly for the tourists, they are not guarding anything (the police are on location and they are the real guards). However, posting a sign that says "Do not touch the reins" would be appropriate.

@@JPB-wy5cl As far as I know, it's not prohibited to touch a working guide dog, it's simply accepted that it is not the correct or sensible thing to do as they are to a large extent, in charge of their human's life. The same should apply to these working horses but even if it was prohibited to touch them, many tourists would ignore that (possibly on the grounds that they are Greek (as at 1:54 😀)) and stroke the horse anyway. They are not encouraged to stroke the horses, and most horses don't like their noses being stroked by complete strangers anyway, but if people desperately want a photo of themselves next to a mounted Life Guard, that's fine. It's one of the reasons why London is a popular tourist destination. In a way, this is a regular training exercise for the horses who should be able to stand or walk quietly when required, ignoring distractions, although some of the Guards' mounts were getting very riled up coming up the Long Walk to Windsor Castle at the funeral on the 19th September.

It’s never okay to touch a service dog without the handlers permission, why people think this is acceptable with a horse is mind blowing. Horses can be very smart, but they can also be very dim, fearful, confused, and downright aggressive. I wouldn’t let random people touch my horse when I was mounted on his back “or otherwise” because (A) he was a F*ing biter and (B) I didn’t want to risk getting thrown because someone put him in a mood because they started acting spastic. Even an expierienced horse is still a horse, stroking their face can sooth them, but it can also distract them, and even alarm them depending on the person doing it, how they’re dressed, how they’re behaving, or what other circumstances happen to be going on, and a scared horse is a dangerous horse. Royal guards have strict rules that they can only interact with the public if absolutly necessary, so they can’t sit down and have a chat to explain this to every tourist that passes by. So the lesson here is DON’T TOUCH the pretty ponies.

I've been a military police officer (did a less glamorous similar duty to these guards) and a tow truck driver and let me tell you something about reading... most people treat literacy like a burden or a deadly tumor they are forces to carry around and absolutely will NOT EVER read anything even if it means helping themselves. Giant white arrow painted on the road? Too confusing. Car broke down in a dangerous neighborhood? Can't be bothered to read a street sign with 1 word on it or look around for a number on a building. Most people would rather step on a landmine than read, unless it's a McDonald's menu, but I've noticed it's mostly just pictures on tv now...

Here's a "Top Tourist Tip" (did you like the alliteration, there!): when I was the father of 3 little boys, I would take them there on the way home from Nursery, stand calmly to one side, whilst speaking softly, so that the Trooper could hear me and my boy's questions and answers about matters equine (the horse's name is on a bridle-piece, underneath the noseband, for example). When it came time for the obligatory photograph, I would tell my boys what we intended to do (again, so the Trooper could hear) and EVERY time, the soldier would cooperate; courtesy, communication and care (more alliteration!) is all that's needed, at the stressful guard post.

Enough of the criticizing of the tourist for touching the reins. Petting the horses is clearly permitted as shown in multiple videos. If the reins cannot be touched, then post a sign indicating that. Most people have no idea what should or should not be done around horses, they have no experience with horses and have never been around them. Personnel who are paid by the taxpayer (ie: the soldiers), should not be getting their point across by screaming at the tourists, many of whom are elderly and do not even speak English. Before anyone says it, I am not anti military, etc, etc....I served 28 years in the military and I find the sanctioned behaviour of these soldiers, completely unacceptable. As for the videos showing soldiers purposely walking into unsuspecting civilians in public areas. That will come to a screaching halt, the moment people start laying assault complaints with the police or launching lawsuits for any injuries incurred.
