A red flag that already would be a reason for a serious discussion or a kick. Also improperly handling the kitty is bad. Story 2: That must be insulting. I, as a DM, often go out of my way to make combat something more than "you roll dice at each other until someone dies". Big enemies often yeet PCs across the board, others decide to alter their tactics mid-fight, and even dumb oozes get to use terrain in interesting ways. And now I see the norm of "Wizard nukes everithing with his arsenal of fireballs" being shaken up - just to be ridiculed by the players? Come on, how is that interesting? Also those players who suggested it in the first place... Man, that's a sneak attack.

    That shield issue sounds like a classic case of players thinking the game should cater to only them, and having a fit when something seems “hard”. @@shadenox8164 I mean we can talk semantics about it all day, I’m speaking in what I perceive a balanced encounter to mean to the players of the story. And as far as what I mean personally when I say I don’t like balanced encounters, it’s that one’s that are planned specifically for the party to win or lose or rather, maybe not designed specifically that way but perceived that way. If the DM throws goblins at the party, there’s often the concept that the players should defeat them. When I was playing and running 5e, that was something I’ve noticed a lot of, players who saw monsters as something to just kill and loot rather than an inherent ecosystem in the world, if that works for you, that’s fine. Just not my cup of tea.

Depending on when the fight happens, the shield takes damage and can only hold X number of charges instead of the full 10, but leave it out in the open that the players might be able to find someone to fix it later. Or the fact it can only hold X number of charges, make it that passing a certain cap causes it to explode and damage or even instantly kill the guy if it goes far enough, but lose the shield is further damaged or gone. Which also makes it a risk for players depending on level and area.

    Story 1: I honestly feel sorry for people like this. They’re so insecure about a vice they have that suddenly, everything becomes about it. Worst part is, 99% of the time there’s no issue, he’s just shooting himself in the foot. (not that this excuses his other actions, just this mindset is pretty common on a lot of people and it’s damaging). Story 2: It honestly feels like the trust between the players and DM had been broken well before the game. We don’t know how overpowered the shield was, but simply absorbing spells isn’t really that broken of an ability on its own assuming basic balancing (ex: if it needs a reaction to use, can be broken with dispel magic, etc). Based on how the story ended, I also wouldn’t be surprised if it had nothing to do with the shield in the first place.

    So the guys that helped make the shield are dicks for no sticking up for the DM when they tried to balance it, But as a player, It just absorbs up too ten spell levels of magic and then gets to fire it back out as a blast, then absorb more? like WTF, that's an artifact level magic item. What's going to happen when a player grabs it.

  • @riptide3340

    @riptide3340

    tbh, it didn’t sound that bad. Of course there’s a lot we don’t know about the item (does it require a reaction to use, does the enemy have to be facing you, how much damage does it do, etc); however, assuming OP tried to balance it properly, it could be easily overcome with planning. heck, I’d argue being immune to physical damage as well wouldn’t be bad as long as it costs reactions/has some kind of cooldown, but that’s just me.

  • @robrib2682

    @robrib2682

    I'd say that's an only an artifact level magical item as long as the player doesn't get caught in a blast that they can't avoid Edit: but yeah any magical item that does that you need to put severe restrictions on it because it would be the equivalent of saying anything but a spell can't damage this thing, not magic not that it's immune to mundane things, only spells can hurt it Edit 2: okay now that I've actually heard the story I'd say by and large the bigger problem is that it sounds like someone wanted to have a power fantasy and in order to have a proper fight, the DM took that away for 1 encounter.... Yea no, the proper response here is to put your foot down and basically tell the wizard that everyone else should be able to have a boss battle

    I had a similar encounter on Twitter while drunk with a lot less sexual harassment but a bit more physical threats. I get very loose when I drink so I'm either your best friend or a bar fight waiting to happen. I also spout bullshit philosophies while drinking. So I was going on about the human body being contradictory by being both beautiful and grotesque using the words "Repulsive Beauty" or some shit. Sparkly words I'd never use as direct insults. And for some reason one of the people in the thread hyper focused on those two words and replies "call my actual 400 pound body Repulsive Beauty again and I'll break your knees". Now I'm many things while drunk, but I don't bother with insults. I'm more _direct_ when I'm pissed while sloshed. And this weirdo made the entire drunken rant about the human body in general all about their weight. I have no idea why these people feel the need to draw attention to their own bodies when no one else did first. It almost feels like projection of self image issues, but that is just a guess on simple people watching and study on my part.

Actual fatphobia is like... doctors blaming every single health issue on your size and not even bothering to run the tests for other problems that might be totally unrelated, even if there's a possibility that it could be a "catch it early or you're dead" problem like cancer. People assuming that just because someone's fat they *must* be actively choosing to eat too much (or mostly junk-food) and/or not get any exercise. Judging, mocking, or otherwise being shitty to someone purely based on their size. Not fatphobic at all to not want to be around someone who stinks, doesn't make any attempt to clean up after themselves (just because your name is Oscar doesn't mean you've got to live in a trash can), mistreats cats (especially after being specifically told what NOT to do), insists on pushing their creepy sexual stuff into everything (especially when a "no sexual stuff" rule has already been established), and has a history of being a stalker. The monster or its lair has some sort of antimagic function? Waaah. The wizard shopkeep saw you casting a spell to get a better deal and counterspells it? Boohoo. You got arrested for doing dumb shit and the shackles you have on prevent spellcasters from escaping? By god you would think the world had ended. I understand for the spellcasters that's a huge portion of their kit, but that's why you round out your party with some melee guys too. Also learn how to survive without your magic. Get some bombs, some alchemical fire, some lockpicks, some poisons, or something as a backup if available so you're not out of options. Sure if your DM was making that happen all the time for extended periods, that's bad, but come on. You can go a couple minutes without your endless slew of magic problem solvers.

I mean don't get me wrong, the fat smelly guy is 7 different types of awful, but at least he wears it on his chin (or under hits armpits, I guess.) I dunno if it's because I've had so many games ruined by awful entitled players but I always feel uncomfortable when players throw a tantrum because they can't "win" at D&D.

    Normally I don't like to judge other people's play styles but losing your shit because you can't spam fireball in one fight? Get creative. Can you catapult something at him since you've not actually applied the spell to him? What about mold earth since that's messing with the ground? Do you really have no support spells you could throw on your melee allies so they could tear through them? I remember one of my favourite things as a sorcerer was seeing the carnage I enabled by twinned spell casting haste on the barbarian and rogue.

    1st story... Thou shalt not creep. Thou shalt not reek. Those are two reasons for you to leave. But this guy found a new commandment for me to put on my list- thou shalt not fuck with my cat/dog. That this filth is part of why female players have created female only groups... There are people who need to leave the hobby. And the planet. 2nd... Nothing personal, he's got messed up table, but it sounds like it got munchkin and unbalanced which bad players only made worse.

    I really like your channel, to the point I've been hoovering it and am almost out of videos to watch, but I only clicked this video to respectfully let you know that the thumbnail for this video is really fatphobic itself. When you run videos about people accusing others of homophobia for no reason, you don't use cruel caricatures of gay people for the thumbnails. The cloud burp and general presentation of the fat person are pretty mean. I'd suggest you change it to a person yelling like your other videos, but don't make the picture of the fat person gross on purpose. Thanks for listening!

    I have to haaaard disagree on the 2nd story doge. A magical shield that completely invalidates an entire character by just giving the middle finger to magic is not fun, creative, or balanced in any way. It goes out of its way to screw over certain players, and that's one of the deadly sins of GMing. This story reeks of bias. Players turning on OP after giving them the greenlight for no reason seems far less likely than OP not explaining the shield well enough to them. Not to mention, OP seemed to learn absolutely nothing about what he did wrong when the *entire table* didn't approve of it. OP is 100% being bias and painting a negative image of players that have the brains to see how absolutely stupid and unfun of an item that shield was. I would have left if the GM argued with me that that was in any way a good idea.

    Speaking as someone who plays casters, nah. Needing to rethink how I use my magic for one fight is not a reason to chuck a tantrum. Did they even try to learn the limitations of the thing? Foe example if it uses his reaction, you feint him with a firebolt and then quicken spell something big. Like god forbid casters have to think about what they're doing.

    @@shadenox8164 it didn't use his reaction. There is no thinking. There are no limitations, else they would be listed. Its all spells are useless, period. Don't try to make assumptions and excuses for bad design.

    @@yourface2464 As opposed to making excuses for lazy players. If we're going by exactly what's written then the players never even tried to work around it they just screamed bullshit and cried after one spell got absorbed. And honestly even if it did work the way you assume, so what? Be more creative than fucking fireball. I garuntee you there's ways around that thing the DM didn't think of. Hell thinking of a sorcerer I played that shield wouldn't stop him twin spell hasting two allies and that's an obvious thing with only a moment of thought. Don't try to bullshit me and say there's no way around it just because you can't spam fireball. Like an ounce of creativity is all you need. Your magic still works doofus you just have to think about its target, the properties of the spell ect. Hell I'd argue mold earth would work around it because it's not aimed at him at all. What about catapult? Come on at least try to think instead of declaring it impossible God if something that limited is too much for you I can't imagine how you'd handle an antimagic zone which unlike that shield does fully block casting.
