Greta Thunberg on the Climate Fight: “If We Can Save the Banks, Then We Can Save the World”

Greta Thunberg is one of the great truth-tellers of this or any time. But Greta is not all talk. All of this began with action. It began when Greta realized that if she wanted powerful politicians to put themselves on emergency footing to fight climate change, then she needed to reflect that state of emergency in her own life. And so she stopped doing the one thing all kids are supposed to do when everything is normal: Go to school to prepare for their future as adults.
Instead, she stationed herself outside of Sweden’s parliament with a handmade sign that said simply: “School Strike for the Climate.” She started doing it every Friday, and pretty soon she attracted a small crowd. Then other students started doing it in other cities as well.
Students like Alexandria Villaseñor, who stations herself outside the United Nations in this city every Friday, week after week, rain, snow or shine. Sometimes the student climate strikes were just one lonely kid. Sometimes tens of thousands showed up.
And then, on March 15, came the first Global School Strike for Climate. Over 2,000 strikes in 125 countries, with 1.6 million young people participating on a single day. 1.6 million people. That’s quite an achievement for a movement that began just eight months earlier with a single 15-year-old girl in Stockholm, Sweden.
And now this movement is gearing up for its biggest challenge yet: They have called on people of all ages to join the and go on strike, all around the world, on September 20. Because protecting the future is not a spectator sport.
Thunberg and the many other amazing young organizers have been very clear that they do not want adults to pat them on the head and thank them for the hope infusion. They want us to join them and fight for the future alongside them. Because it is their right. And all of our duty.

It's obvious what Thunberg meant: She didn't mean to say: Saving the banks is the way to save the planet; she meant to say: We had the money to save so the banks, so we should have more than enough money to save the planet. But that meaning is obvious, both from her words and the context as well as from her over-all message and her other interviews and speeches. It would require an unimaginable amount of dishonesty and ill will to twist the meaning of what she's saying here around like so many of the trolls in the comments do. Now, THAT ALONE proves her absolutely right, because if someone can't be attacked for their actual words, if every single person attacking them needs to resort to blatant lies (and I have yet to meet a single honest critic of Thunberg), then that someone must speak the truth. What I find so funny here though is: When she (allegedly) says: Save the banks! - then that's apparently a reason to antagonize her and she's apparently controlled by the elites. Yet if she were to say the opposite, if she were to say: Bring down the banks and the capitalist system, let's get rid of the rich elites! - then that would, of course, be a reason to antagonize her, because then she'd be a filthy commie. I find it absolutely hilarious how all these people switch within seconds from being the little, common man, fighting against the rich global elites, to being die-hard supporters of capitalism and of these rich global elites and the system empowering them, while rejecting anything that would be in favor of the little, common man. I mean, I know the left is pretty moody and self-contradictory and not making much sense, but this? This is on another level, it's absurdist comedy.

@@JonathanIvoLoewer I watched the whole video, and I can tell you that what she said did not even make sense in context. The quote was this, "The money is there; if we can save the banks, we can save the world." However, I will grant you that she did say afterwards that the money should be used to save the planet (instead of the banks). So I will excuse that as just another cringey thing that she says here. Secondly, people leaving troll comments does not prove someone right. Pretty much anyone of influence has got troll comments. And what happens when two influencers that disagree with each other both receive troll comments? They can't both be right. That's because evidence is what proves someone correct or incorrect. You say you haven't met a single honest critic of Thunberg. Well you have now because I am one. In fact, the reason I disagree with Thunberg is because she herself is not honest. How can she tell people that they have a responsibility to fight global warming when she herself is benefiting from (and completely disregarding) the industrial complex which arguably hurts the environment the most. Whenever you buy something that was made in a factory or by a machine of some kind, you are contributing to the system that hurts the environment more and more with each product they make (most of which end up in a landfill when you have no use for them anymore) and each new building they construct (which use up energy and destroy habitats). Notice how we did not have any human-made environmental problems for millions of years of human history until now. And by the way, I would not have a problem with this hypocrisy if she actually was honest about it and told people about the harm that the industrial revolution has caused; because I understand that it is very hard to live nowadays without any modern conveniences. But she does not tell people about this, maybe because she is unaware. At most, she is a dishonest hypocrite, and at the very least, she is naive to how the world works. I doubt you will reply to this, since I criticize Thunberg but don't fit into your 'conservative capitalist' box. Just think about it though. If you're up for some reading, I'd recommend 'The Industrial Society and it's Future' by Ted Kaczynski. He is one of the few environmentalists who actually practiced what he preached. editions-hache.com/essais/pdf/kaczynski2.pdf

@@tyronemarcus7550 I do not have any "boxes" I use. In fact my whole life is centered about promoting the very opposite of what you accuse me (funny, just how you make Thunberg out to be the very opposite of what she is; it's rather telling how bad a judge of character you apparently are). It seems that you are the one who put me into a box, instead of bothering to read what was actually said. If there would be a reason not to reply it wouldn't be because you don't fit any "box" - because actually you fit it quite neatly - but rather because you have shown incapable of even reading my short comment properly - which, frankly, gives me reason to disregard anything you might say about Thunberg or her speeches. No, I never said that trolls going after someone proves that person right. As I never said this and as it isn't possible to misinterprete my words in this way, I don't see a reason to reply to that argument of yours. I'll just address one major point instead: No, I still haven't met a single honest critic of Thunberg's. Still only liars and evil people, as far as the eye can see. Thunberg has more integrity than any other person currently in the eye of the public. Her absolute honesty is so obvious that it can't be misjudged, unless there is bad intent behind it. You may disagree with anything she says, you may deny climate change - but you just cannot possibly question her absolute integrity while at the same time claiming to be an honest critic of her's. She goes to length to fact-check any word she says, believing it very important not to spread misconceptions or rumors. That is something you obviously don't do, because from your words it's obvious you haven't listened to her much, you are just making empty claims. Because otherwise you couldn't make two completely untrue claims: 1) Thunberg DOES practice what she preaches. But of course that can only be judged by someone who knows what she actually preaches. She has made enough statements about this system, the individual's role in this, individual vs. system change, that you can easily find it if you want. You don't need me for that. 2) Thunberg has, of course, addressed the economy and the industry many, many times. She has stressed the responsibility of big cooperation but also the fact that the people drive the economy. She has said countless of times that living environmentally-friendly within this system is hardly possible - that for example her sailing to America of course wasn't emission free either, but was meant to draw attention to how hard an emission free life actually is right now - and that the system needs to fundamentally change. Of course, every person who bothers to listen to even one or two of her talks or speeches would know this - and any person who doesn't bother with that can't claim to be an honest critic. Thunberg is an excellent litmus test for people's moral character. And there would be much to say about those who fail this test and who instinctively antagonize her as they instincitively antagonize anything good, honest and pure because they feel very much threatened by it. I'll reply to honest answers, should any follow. But please don't expect me to reply to any more blatant and dishonest lies. You can carry on with those, to be sure. But not when speaking to me, it doesn't work with me. It happens that I might be one of the biggest living experts on Thunberg right now (excepting herself, her family etc.), so it is rather pointless to lie to me of all people about her.

@@JonathanIvoLoewer First of all, you did say that trolls going after someone proves them "absolutely right". Read your post again. Secondly, are you really going to claim that everyone who criticizes Thunberg's ideas must be evil and a liar? Sounds sort of like the 'No true Scotsman' fallacy Christians use all the time. Also, "Honest" seems to be one of your favorite words; everyone who objects to Thunberg's thoughts is dishonest, right? Well how can you say that you are arguing honestly when you resort to constant character assassinations like this in your posts? One point you are right on though is that I was too quick to judge her views on the industry. If she did talk about it, then my bad; I haven't watched a lot of Thunberg, and I'm not a Thunberg expert like you say you are. I had just assumed from stunts like the yacht ride that you mentioned that she didn't really care about it. And that was really my point here, it's hard to take her seriously when she does stuff like that. Lastly, the voyage to America was announced to be a zero carbon footprint trip. A big deal was made about that. It was only from the co-skipper that we learned that several people were supposed to fly to New York in order to bring the yacht back to Europe. So it would actually be less damaging to the environment if she just flew there herself. I want to be wrong about Thunberg, but this comes off pretty deceitful. As if she only cares about what people will see (the zero carbon footprint yacht ride) instead of the greater total damage to the environment. Maybe you can convince me otherwise, but I'd appreciate it if you actually discussed the point instead of labeling everyone who dissents from Thunberg dishonest.

Because we are in an emergency and because no one acts for it. And when she is saying it's an emergency it means she learned and understand the science reports. Which is probably why people call her genius. If you want her to not quote what scientist say then how about you get yourself up there and do it yourself. It's sad to see a world where the green movement has a blind hatred of one of the two molecules needed to produce every molecule in every green plant. It's sad to see such irrational hatred and fear of a gas the increase in concentration of which reduces the amount of water needed, which is especially helpful for plant growth in arid climates. It's sad to see such hate and fear for the molecule responsible for an immense and easily measurable amount of global greening confirmed by the satellite record, especially in arid regions. By the way, increased plant growth in arid regions is the reversal of desertification. It's sad to see a world where organic matter that has been lost to the biosphere, thus reducing amount of living biomass the biosphere can construct, is feared and demonized, when it measurably greens the earth. It's sad to see a world where elephants struggle to find enough foliage to survive and yet a molecule that has increased the growth of foliage, especially in the habitat of elephants, is feared and hated by the "green movement." It's sad to see a green movement opposed to greening... The green movement needs to return to a wholehearted devotion to actually protecting the environment. Protect the old growth forests from logging. Protect the ocean from littering. Protect the waters from chemical pollutants. Protect the whales from poachers and cruel aquarists. Protect swamps from being drained to build a parking lot. Lobby for more responsible disposal of waste. Lobby against production and sale of enormous amounts of cheap crap that doesn't last and needs to be replaced. Innovate cleaner ways to extract and process natural resources to reduce our impact when we do engage in mining. Rehabilitate any land we have done damage to. Plant trees. Find cleaner ways to extract former trees from the earth. Find ways to clean up any toxins that come along with the former trees. Reduce use of plastics, due to their bioincompatibility and toxic leeching into food products. Use that carbon for energy, and use it with the top standards for filtration. According to the laws of physics, the increase in atmospheric heat will be smaller and smaller the more CO2 is added, but embrace what heat does result. It increases plant growth just like CO2 or we wouldn't have something called a growing season. It also increases the evaporation of water over the massive area of water that covers most of the world, increasing precipitation and humidity. Fearing growth and warmth is irrational unless you fear life and a green environment and want to protect and expand the deserts of the world from the expansion of evil plant life.

Just my resolve to stay small and spread as little shit around as possible. Enjoy what i had and buy NEW things, as little as possible. But even this was a form of desertion. Now...i am moving my ass once again. Just the Work involved, in aiming at ZERO Garbage is quite Impressive. I am having to rethink all my weekly Grocery Cart. ALL OF IT. No Garbage is NO garbage. No more biscuits, pies, cans, boxed cereals, cellophane, bags, tissue, commercial packaging, the list is mind boggling !! but you know what ! ? I'M NEWLY ALIVE and kicking and 68 and happy to know that Greta is my Captain ! This is like Science-Fiction ...and i LOVE sci-fi. There you go...

We now only go on holidays by train or bus. We buy as much food as possible from the best-before fridge in the coop. And she is wickedly funny in a very swedish way, sometimes. The kids became Vegan. And - at the last election - I asked them what to vote. (They could not votemselves, but this election was important for the future. I live in a small rural village in Denmark. At the last election, one of my friends was an election worker. I met him just after the election - he was totally surprised. In his 40 years in that job, he had never seen as many young people voting as now. Every effing high-schooler had voted before 6 pm. And THAT is Gretas doing.

@Gio Corvino - This is only recent, and the combined populations of India and China are much bigger than the US and the EU combined. The population of the EU is 513 million and that of the US is 327 million i.e. a combined population of 840 million. The population of India alone is 1.34 billion. That of China is 1.39 billion i.e. a combined population of 2.73 billion. In others words about 325% larger than that the combined populations of the US and EU. Then you have to factor in the much bigger historical emissions of the US and the EU. So if you are looking simplistically at national carbon emissions between these countries, you are not comparing apples to apples. What is more it is the US and the EU countries which actively encouraged industrialization in China and India. Additional problems exist with trying to calculate actual carbon emissions each country is responsible. As the most common forms of calculation exclude shipping and aviation. Many figures often don't take into account the end destination of manufactured goods, and that huge volumes of consumer goods are now manufactured in China and India, not merely for Western consumers, but on behalf of companies based in the West. Likewise there is the additional problem of patterns of forest, peatland, soil, agriculture and the overall carbon budget related to this. It's much more revealing to look at wealth, and to see how the top 10% of the wealthiest people are responsible for around 50% of all global emissions. Similar patterns are evidence at both national levels in developed countries and globally. Whereas the poorest 50% of the global population only produce about 10% of global carbon emissions in terms of consumption emissions. Most clearly illustrating that the real problem is the wealthiest proportion of the population, and that scapegoating the poorest sections of the global population is specious, spurious, and extremely misleading. www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/dec/02/worlds-richest-10-produce-half-of-global-carbon-emissions-says-oxfam In addition it is a well known logical fallacy, whataboutery, where responsibility is denied and diverted with red herrings, by saying look over there. The industrial revolution began in the UK, where I'm from, and the US and Europe built their great wealth on the back of coal burning. Yes, there are huge problems with this. However, it is hypocritical in the extreme to have promoted a pattern of wealth accumulation for over 200 years, and then accuse countries trying to catch up using exactly the same methods of being the problem.
