I feel so sad that it has to come to this. These kids who, quite rightly, fear for their lives and futures are having to lead the way because the rest of us have fallen far short.

World leaders but also us adults should hang our heads in shame. We all need to change our ways, our travel plans and the way we live...and fast. If we can’t make those choices of our own free will then the policies need to come in to force us. It will hurt our known, free and easy way of life but it needs to be addressed one way or another!

Tens of thousands of children or schools are striking for the climate on the streets of Brussels. Hundreds of thousands are doing the same all over the world. We are school striking because we have done our homework. And some of us are here today. People always tell us that they are so hopeful. They are hopeful that the young people are going to save the world, but we are not. There is simply not enough time to wait for us to grow up and become the ones in charge. Because by the year 2020 we need to have bended the emissions curve steep downward. That is next year. We know that most politicians don't want to talk to us. Good, we don't want to talk to them either. We want them to talk to the scientists instead. Listen to them, because we are just repeating what they are saying and have been saying for decades. We want you to follow the Paris agreement and the IPCC reports. We don't have any other manifests or demands, you unite behind the science that is our demand. When many politicians talk about the school strike for the climate, they talk about almost anything except for the climate crisis. Many people are trying to make the school strikes a question of whether we are promoting truancy or whether we should go back to school or not. They make up all sorts of conspiracies and call us puppets who cannot think for ourselves. They are desperately trying to remove the focus from the climate crisis and change the subject. They don't want to talk about it because they know they cannot win this fight. Because they know they haven't done their homework, but we have. Once you have done your homework you realize that we need new politics, we need new economics where everything is based on a rapidly declining and extremely limited remaining carbon budget. But that is not enough. We need a whole new way of thinking. The political system that you have created is all about competition. You cheat when you can, because all that matters is to win, to get power. That must come to an end, we must stop competing with each other, we need to cooperate and work together and to share the resources of the planet in a fair way. We need to stop living within the planetary boundaries, focus on equity and take a few steps back for the sake of all living species. We need to protect the biosphere, the air, the oceans, the soil, the forests. This may sound very naive, but if you have done your homework then you know that we don't have any other choice. We need to focus every inch of our being on climate change, because if we fail to do so than all our achievements and progress have been for nothing and all that will remain of our political leaders’ legacy will be the greatest failure of human history. And they will be remembered as the greatest villains of all time, because they have chosen not to listen and not to act. But this does not have to be. There is still time. According to the IPCC report we are about 11 years away from being in a position where we set off an irreversible chain reaction beyond human control. To avoid that unprecedented changes in all aspects of society, [actions] need to have taken place within this coming decade, including a reduction of our CO2 emissions by at least 50 percent by the year 2030. And please note that those numbers do not include the aspect of equity, which is absolutely necessary to make the Paris agreement work on a global scale, nor do they include tipping points or feedback loops like the extremely powerful methane gas released from the thawing Arctic permafrost. They do, however, include negative emission techniques on a huge planetary scale that is yet to be invented, and that many scientists fear will never be ready in time and will anyway be impossible to deliver at the scale assumed. We have been told that the EU intends to improve its emission reduction targets. In the new target, the EU is proposing to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 45 percent below 1990’s level by 2030. Some people say that is good or that is ambitious. But this new target is still not enough to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius. This target is not sufficient to protect the future for children growing up today. If the EU is to make its fair contribution to staying within the carbon budget for the two-degree limit, then it means a minimum of 80 percent reduction by 2030 and that includes aviation and shipping. So [it is] around twice as ambitious as the current proposal. The actions required are beyond manifestos or any party politics. Once again, they sweep their mess under the carpet for our generation to clean up and solve. Some people say that we are fighting for our future, but that is not true. We are not fighting for our future, we are fighting for everyone's future. And if you think that we should be in school instead, then we suggest that you take our place in the streets striking from your work. Or better yet, join us so it can speed up the process. And I am sorry, but saying everything will be alright while continue doing nothing at all is just not hopeful to us. In fact, it's the opposite of hope. And yet this is exactly what you keep doing. You can't just sit around waiting for hope to come, you're acting like spoiled irresponsible children. You don't seem to understand that hope is something you have to earn. And if you still say that we are wasting valuable lesson time then let me remind you that our political leaders have wasted decades through denial and inaction. Some actual science: During a 20 year period from 1978 to 1998 the global average temperature rose sharply by 0.4 degrees Celsius. And then the warming stopped. From 1998 and forward for the next twenty years, the average global temperature has remained constant... a little up, a little down and ended about where it started. No global warming. The IPCC catastrophic warnings are all based on a collection of climate models that do not predict observed climate. The models predict warming that did not occur, and their claims are based on the models. The IPCC is engaged in climate speculation. In in a moment of rare honesty in an IPCC Assessment Report draft, they wrote "the ability of climate models to make future climate projections cannot be evaluated". Yes, most of us know this. Humans can't predict weather very well either, and climate is just long term weather. In fact humans don't predict weather as mush as observe it with radar, then make estimations where it will travel based on observed speed and direction patterns. The correlation between CO2 and temperature is historically transient at best. From 1978 to 1998 it seemed promising to alarmists. Since 1998 however the correlation is non-existent, CO2 has continued to rise while temperatures have not. "Global Warming" was rebranded as "Climate Change". CO2 is essential for life and occurs naturally. It's not a pollutant. At levels below 150ppm (parts per million) plants will not grow. The oceans (which cover 70% of the planet), volcanoes, decaying plant life and breathing animals (including humans) all continually emit CO2. Each human adds about 800 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere each year simply by breathing. We exhale about 100 times the amount of CO2 we absorbed when inhaling. The atmosphere is mostly water vapor. The most abundant greenhouse gas by far, is water vapor. CO2 has a well known quality where its greenhouse effect rapidly diminishes. In other words, the next molecule of CO2 added to the atmosphere has less heat retention qualities than the previous. CO2 is a minuscule part of our atmosphere. If you had a jar full of ten thousand molecules of atmosphere, only four of those molecules would be CO2. 100+ years ago, prior to human industrialization using fossil fuel, the jar would have had 3 CO2 molecules. If the jar had less than 1.5, the earth would struggle to sustain plant life. The CO2 level is currently at 400ppm (parts per million). NASA considers a space station with CO2 levels up to 3000ppm to 5000ppm safe. Submarines are considered safe up to levels of 5000ppm to 8000ppm. The earth is at historically low temperatures and low levels of CO2. We are still coming out of the Little Ice Age (1300AD to 1850AD). The Little Ice Age was preceded by two recent periods significantly warmer than today, the Roman Warm Period (250BC to 400AD) and the Medieval Warm Period (950AD to 1250AD). Both occurred before human industrialization with fossil fuels, and during periods of lower levels of CO2. The Pacific Ocean covers almost a third of the planet and has a warming/cooling cycle about every 50 years. The impact of the earths massive water system (oceans & atmosphere which is mostly water vapor) likely plays a far more significant role in the natural variability of climate. Not to mention the impact of solar activity. Science believes clouds may have an offsetting effect to greenhouse gases, but more research is needed. Climate scientists know of a spruce tree stump with its root system intact 100km north of today's Arctic tree line, carbon dated to be 5000 years old. In other words, just a short time ago, but well before human industrialization with fossil fuels, the earth was significantly warmer with lower levels of CO2. Climate speculators love to talk about Arctic ice, but rarely note the Arctic only holds 1% of Earth's ice. The Antarctic and Greenland account for the other 99% (90% and 9% respectively). In 1942 a plane called the Glacier Girl made an emergency landing on Greenland. 50 years later in 1992 it was uncovered under 270 feet of ice. There are estimates of 1 to 1.5 BILLION people on the planet today who's only access to energy is biomass (wood, cow dung...). Another 1 to 1.5 Billion have NO access to energy on a regular basis. There are only about 400 million people in the United States, so the numbers of energy deprived are staggering. Carbon taxes and climate policies of the rich are regressive. They hurt the poorest the hardest. Al Gore made $100 million dollars selling climate change movies, books and speeches. Elon Musk has wealth beyond imagination selling green cars using tax payer funded subsidies, and countless others continue to profit from the $billions poured into "green deals" each year. Climate Change is a $massively $profitable $industry, and the $money is very $green. The earth warms and cools, and climate is in constant change, all on its own whether humans like it or not. It has done so for billions of years. We still know little about the very complex climate system and we need to continue the study. The idea that CO2 is the primary 'forcing' agent driving temperature and climate is simply not supported by objective science.

It takes the teenagers of this generation to wake up the world leaders of this generation to do something, Hopefully, they will heed their warnings before its too late.

Yes, they should. Not only them, but us people too. We have let them do this for decades and we ourself did participate by flying, by driving cars, by wasting so much energy and goods. We voted for them because they promised cheap energy and goods. Or at least we did not stand up and stop them years ago.

She's Absolutely correct, now the actions will begin at an individual level. an open solution for every human being on the planet : to reduce our carbon footprint and toxic footprint of any kind to zero, we should plan a living in 100% self sufficient, regenerative and sustainable Eco-village communities. This is completely possible if we have a will. It is practical.
