I'm not an American, and looking at this from 30,000feet, seems like they will use any excuse to take the guns away from the ones that are trained to use them best. I'd be happy to have a trained marine in my community even if he may be a little off due to combat. Surly decisions like this will prevent those who need help from getting it in case they lose the ability to defend their families.

To all my fellow vets who use the VA Healthcare System, be proactive with your care. A lot of care slips through the cracks of VA void. Doctors want the best for their patients, but they are overwhelmed and inundated with patients. Lots of care fall into the category of "lost to follow up" that leads to deterioration of continuity of care. Like outside healthcare systems, polypharmacy is rampant because doctors don't know what you're taking unless you tell them - take responsibility for your care/health as much as possible. Now that said, we also have employees that crud on the bottom of the barrel and be better off working in fast food with no human contact, but they're still working at VHA.

The whole PTSD thing is a mess. Not everyone gets PTSD, people have different levels of consciousness, some see something messed up and just dismiss it, some go to pieces. Some get PTSD form war, some get it from seeing a car crash. Wanting to off yourself constantly and ducking when you hear a gunshot are two different things. The Government's one-size-fits-all solution NEVER works because we are individuals, not a collective. So when someone does actually need help, they hide it, so they don't get flagged and screwed over.

Re the boxes that need checked for VA Disability Compensation to pay- 1) injury in service, 2) current disability, and 3) link between 1 and 2. Every vet should have the 3 post test in mind before applying or at least before going into the C&P exam. If you can't prove all 3 to their looking they won't pay a dime. And don't let the docs start trying to talk about anything that happened before you served. They often use that as a reason to deny as well.

Im Retired..Dual service branches, 5yrs Army/15 yrs Navy. Did a couple tours in Iraq..Ive always been torn on VA compensation for PTSD..I mean hey if you get your Arms and legs blown off or a host of other disabilitys ..Fine ill pay for you for the rest of your life..I know that War does mess up people mentally, but sometimes im like "What did you think you were gonna see"? "What did you think you were joining"?! The system is what it is. If a Vet needs help go get it..But it seems "SOME" not all have found a way to serve a few years and get a retirement check out of it by running to the VA.

It's on the active side as well. Seen guys who needed to see mental health and the clinic tells them to come back in 6 to 8 weeks and they won't refer them downtown either. Earlier in my career none of the guys wanted to see mental health because once you checked in you were completely at their mercy. They never take "risks", they always play it safe, you could be completely normal and they'd still recommend you not be brought up. Then all of a sudden everyone around you starts treating you like crap because you can't do the mission.
